MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF RAINFALL

In your own thinking ,how is rainfall measured?

There are two parts you need to take care when measuring rainfall.

1.How to set up the rain gauge before rains come

2.How to record the the reading after the rains

MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF RAINFALL

Setting Up a rain gauge

i. Place the copper cylinder in the ground with 30cm projecting above the ground protected by the outer casing.

ii.Insert the glass jar in the copper cylinder.

iii.Place the funnel with the diameter of 12.7 cm into the copper cylinder ( see the diagramme from your cards).

PRECAUTIONS WHEN SETTING UP A RAINGAUGE.

How to set up a rain gauge before rainfall is recorded

i. Place rain gauge 1 meter above the ground . This helps to avoid splashes from the ground.ii.Its should be positioned away from tall buildings, trees and other

high objects. These objects can either block the amount of rainfall to be recorded

or the runoff water can be recorded as well.iii. Clean the rain gauge before rainfall or after along drought period.iv. Take the readings 45 minutes after rain falls.
