With Ethernet featuring on every plant floor and the growing ease of installation and flexibility of wireless, technology is fast becoming a part of our everyday life. Radio technology in automation systems is mainly used for monitoring conditions, systems and equipment located in remote locations where traditional means of communication cable is not a viable option .

Typical system monitoring and equipment status applications include pipelines, transmission lines and water/wastewater treatment plants. The use of wireless should always be considered any time you need to measure something located in an inconvenient, inhospitable, or moving location.

All options are readily available and in most cases the only extras required are power and an antenna. The choice of which antenna and radio to use in any application will mainly be defined by the data speeds required and the distance/terrain between sites. The purpose of this guide is to help quick selection of the equipment required for wireless communications in most common applications.

Select products from sections 1 to 5 using the Quick Selection Guide to assemble everything required for a new radio installation. All parts listed in this guide are “off the shelf” and supported by NHP so you can select with confidence.

Selecting Radio Select a radio to best suit your application. Long range, high bandwidth & WAN options available:

900 MHz• License free band – 1 watt • Frequency Hopping – good security, better for penetration of trees, walls etc.• 1.1 Mbps • Typical Application , RTU, SCADA and other low bandwidth longer range applications

2.4 GHz / 5 GHz• License free band • 802.11abg & n(Wi-Fi) • Up to 54Mbps high speed communications (RLX2IHWA & RLX2IHGA)• Up to 100Mbps high speed communications (RLX2IHNFA)1)

• Up to 300 Mbps depending on radio frequency and antenna selection. For 802.11n radios with channel bonding and MIMO antennas.

• Typical Application, IO Scanning, IP Cameras, Mobile HMI i.e. Prosoft i-View

Cellular• GSM or NextG Networks• Wide Area Networks• Typical Applications, RTU, Remote monitoring and maintenance of control systems

Cable Selection Intermediate cable from radio to the bulk head or lighting protection• SMA to N Plug cables• 0 .6 or 1.5mtrs 2)

• Forms first section of cable from radio to lighting protection

Lightning Protection SelectionBest Practice offering equipment protection from the effects of lighting on antennas • Use in outdoor application• 900 Mhz, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz have specific protection

Cable SelectionCable from bulkhead or lighting protection to antennas • N Plug to N Plug LMR400 Coax• 0.6mtrs, 1.5mtrs, 3mtrs and 6mtrs 2)

• Forms second section of cable from lighting protection to antenna

Antenna Selection When selecting antennas to suit your application, consider your radio frequency, mobile or fixed application, range and fresnel zone. See typical range table below for further details.

Omni Direction Antennas• Even signal distribution 360° on the horizontal plane • Short range communication• 3dBi to 12dBi gain models available• Base station style antennas are most common• Typical applications – moving machinery, base station, Wi-Fi hotspots & repeaters

Directional Antennas• A concentrated radiation pattern in a specific direction on both horizontal & vertical planes• Longer range communication• Models with up to 24db gain • Patch Panel, Yagi, Parabolic antennas available• Typical applications – RTUs, remote I/O nodes and application with high reflections

Cellular• Includes 1.5mtr cable• Typically used to allow antenna outside steel enclosures to improve reception
