Branch Newsletter. Special thanks to Tim Brown and Ben Fletcher for taking over my RACI duties whilst I travelled overseas for the past month. I recently attended the National Assembly in Melbourne and was heartened by all the good things being done across the various groups, branches and divisions as well as efforts being put in at National Office and Board level. There is an enthusiasm to increase our membership and provide tangible benefits to all RACI members. There was also a proposal put forward for an OHS & E Division that was well received. These are all positive steps in growing the RACI and there is a strong will to succeed. In this edition, our getting to know you article is on our newest Branch Committee member, Magdeline Lum. Magdeline brings some great ideas and youthful exuberance to the committee. The recent running of the 40 th Bayliss Youth Lecture series has been a great success and some further venues are under consideration for later in the year. There has also been interest in running it in the Northern Territory and funding/ sponsorship for this is being sought. Later in 2011, there will be three distinguished scientists visiting Perth and giving lectures. There will be other IYC2011 events being held and some of these are being organised by the WA Chemistry Consortium which includes the RACI WA Branch. The topics, venues & dates will be advertised in your Newsletter when finalised. All people with a fascination for science are welcome and encouraged to attend. This Newsletter is a great way of getting news and information out to our members. If you have an interesting article you’d like to share with us, please send to Paula McLay for consideration. Pictures are also encouraged. Shane Koenig, FRACI President, RACI WA Branch

RACI Getting to Know You: Magdeline Lum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Graduate Diploma Extractive Metallurgy from

Murdoch University. Currently enrolled in a Master of Science Communication at the University of Western Australia

Current Employer: Self-employed Current Position: Freelance Science Writer Describe a typical workday: The first thing I do is read the news wire services for science as well

as making contact with people involved in science in Western Australia for possible news stories for the publications I write for. I currently write for Science Network WA and Australasian Science. I try to look for chemistry and metallurgical stories but I struggle to find anything to report so if any members have any research they would like a little publicity over, let me know.

Career highlight: I don’t know. I’ll let you know when I get to the end of my career path. It has been

a wonderful adventure so far. I have had jobs that have placed me in remote places in Australia where the animals are curious about humans instead of fearful. Other jobs have had me atop tanks filled with mineral slurry and mills grinding ore. And now I have a job where I meet talented scientists from all over the world on their projects finding out about the latest in science and technology.

What is your dream job? I have never had long enough to dream about it. I tend to weigh up

opportunities as they present themselves. I enjoy working most in roles where I am able to discover new things.

Any children? I don’t have the time for a pet fish so children would be a bad idea. How do you maintain balance between your work and personal life? I’m currently failing at this

between finishing a Masters and working so I make sure I enjoy what I’m doing in all areas. I’m looking forward to a well earned break in the summer.

Any volunteer or community roles? WA Museum in the current AC/DC Exhibition Hobbies past/present I have trained in Kendo in the past but due to injury I had to stop. In the

future I hope to begin training in Iaido. For now, I fence at En Garde Fencing Club based at Murdoch University.

Last Holiday Ten days in Queensland in 2007 where I scuba dived on the Great Barrier Reef and

visited the Daintree Rainforest.

Have you heard the one about a chemist who was reading a book about helium and just couldn't put it down? Q: What kind of ghosts haunt chemistry faculties? A: Methylated Spirits! Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip? To get to the same side.

Hazardous Materials Data Sheet : MAN Analysis: Has been going on for many years. No results yet available Element: Man Symbol: Bd (From the Latin ‘Beerus Drinkus’) Discoverer: Eve Atomic Mass: Average about 80kg but can go up to Super Mega size Occurrence: Large amounts found in close proximity to ethanol deposits. Smaller quantities found near refined petroleum deposits. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 1. Surface is usually rough and covered in a furry substance 2. Boils in saturated solutions of ethanol, no known freezing point 3. Melts if kept near domestic appliances but seems to have a high tolerance for direct sunlight, especially if doused in cold liquids 4. Found in various grades from gem to v.poor. Amazingly if kept in prolonged contact with Wo (Woman) grade will tend to decrease CHEMICAL PROPERTIES 1. Has great affinity for ethanol, animal fats and dirt 2. Reacts badly to over usage – structure can break down 3. If combined with low-grade Wo a massive explosion will result 4. When combined with expensive foodstuffs becomes very malleable COMMON USES 1. Very useful for small repair jobs but requires careful handling in case of spontaneous combustion 2. Has an amazing ability to turn money into thin air TESTS 1. Pure specimen is impossible to find but supposedly will co-exist with Wo indefinitely 2. New sample will turn green in contact with large amounts of ethanol 3. Old sample will turn reddish in contact with even larger amounts of ethanol

WA Innovator of the Year 2011 Launch Innovation Festival 26 April- 31 May 2011

Professor Lyn Beazley with Oana Lord

The launch of The Australian Innovation Festival and the 2011 WA Innovator of the Year Awards took place at the Maritime Museum, Victoria Quay, Fremantle, Thursday, 5 May.

The event is the State’s most exciting and rewarding program promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across public, private and education sectors.

The WA Chief Scientist, Professor Lyn Beazley said in her presentation that innovation is a culture and needs to be promoted to the younger generation. She is proud to work with SciTech in attracting the primary and high schools students to the innovation circle. Professor Lyn Beazley was amazed by the ideas and ingenuity of the innovations submitted in the SciTech competition. Other talks followed from young and not so young inventors. They all admitted to the “hard road” an inventor is travelling and many times without the final reward, still they all said that is better to “have a go” than to regret all your life that you did not.

The event was organised by the Department of Commerce. The main sponsor is Mitsubishi Corporation.

I’m sure many of you are aspiring or already established innovators, so why not to have a chemist and RACI member winning the prize!

More information about The WA Innovator of the Year 2011 categories and how to apply can be found at: www.commerce.wa.gov./innovator_awards or www.commerce.wa.gov./stateofinnovation or www.ausinnovation.org/events

Good luck! Oana Lord, FRACI
