Time of Confession Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession

O God of peace, we have built up walls to protect ourselves from our enemies, but those walls also shut us off from receiving your love. Break down those walls. Help us to see that the way to your heart is through the reconciliation of our own hearts with our enemies. Bless them and us, that we may come to grow in love for each other and for you, through Jesus Christ. Lord, hear our confession and those we offer in the silence, ….. (a silence is kept) In the name of the Christ Child we pray, Amen.

A Note From Rev. Dr. Paul J. KirbasDear Congregation,

Can you imagine a world in which there are no more lions and tigers and bears? Oh My! Species extinction is a natural phenomenon throughout the ages of our planet, but the current rate is more than 10,000 times the background rate, which means that within 50 years, between 30 to 50% of all species currently on earth will be extinct. Much of this is caused by the changes in environments caused by the changes in climate. Humans will become very lonely on this planet unless we heed the alarm bells now and do whatever we can to rescue life on earth!

I want to invite you to attend the first Kirbas Institute event here in Oklahoma City, as we welcome CNN environmental journalist John Sutter, the Emmy nominated creator of the series “2 Degrees”. This event will feature a reception time, a full dinner, and John’s presentation entitled Forget Al Gore: The Five Things You Really Need to Know About Climate Change. This event will be held on Thursday, January 25, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at the Oklahoma History Center. Our own Alex Cameron, Channel 9 news anchor, will serve as our Master of Ceremonies, and Rev. Shannon Fleck, from the

Oklahoma Conference of Churches, will offer our invocation. For tickets to the event, visit www.kirbasinstitute.org, or contact Lori Jirousek in our church office.

And speaking of science and faith, I also want to invite you to attend my first Pastor’s Class of 2018, as I lead us through a fascinating journey deep into our DNA. In the continuing debates about Determinism and Free Will, Nature and Nurture, Destiny and Choice, the newest scientific evidence shows a startling discovery that can change everything we think. Join us for this six-week adventure called The Sanctified Body: How Holy Living Can Change Us from the Inside Out. It begins this week, January 14, at 9:30 AM in the Social Hall.

2018 is here, and some exciting things are ahead! I hope you will be a part of them!

In God’s Love,

Dr. Paul J. KirbasPastor/Head of Staff

STEWARDSHIP UPDATEIt is an exciting time in the life of our church. Together, let’s imagine what God could do through our giving! As of today, 279 families have turned in their pledge cards for the 2018 Stewardship Campaign totaling $1,457,913.00. You can turn in your pledge at the front desk or put in the large safe in the Garden Court.

We would also like to say, “thank you” to all of those who gave to the 2017 annual budget and the 2020 Capital Campaign. Your faithfulness allows WPC to continue our missions and ministries. If you have any questions, please contact the business office at 524-2224 ext. 234.

THE 2018 UNITY SERVICEThe 2018 Unity Service will take place on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 4 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The service will feature speakers Bishop James G. (Jimmy) Nunn, Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church, and The Rev. Dr. Matt Meinke, Stated Clerk, Indian Nations Presbytery. This event is sponsored by the Oklahoma Alliance for Liturgy and the Arts.

THANK YOUThe Worship & Music Committee unanimously approved a resolution to commend and thank Reverend Michelle Junkin and Ms. Darci McKinnon for the design and construction of the beautiful papercut banners used in the Sanctuary during the 2017 Advent season. The banners, an inspiring complement to the Advent teachings, were a labor of love and tremendous talent.

A NEW PASTOR’S CLASS / STARTING TODAYTHE SANCTIFIED BODY: HOW HOLY LIVING CAN CHANGE US FROM THE INSIDE OUTThroughout history, there has been a constant debate about the relationships of determinism and free will, of DNA and free choice, and of Nature vs. Nurture. Recent discoveries about how our genes work offer startling new insight into the real relationship between our internal DNA and our external lives and experience. In this Pastor’s Class, Dr. Kirbas will share these discoveries, and look at the implications they offer for our lives and our faith. Is it possible to sanctify our bodies as well as our spirits? Join us for The Sanctified Body, beginning TODAY, at 9:30 AM in the Social Hall.

ACTS TOUR TO GREECEFor those interested in the ACTS tour to Greece, please know that the deadline for registrations has been moved up to January 30. For more information, visit our website or pick up a brochure located at a table in the Garden Court.

Prayer of the Day

*Hymn: #468 In My Life Lord, Be Glorified

Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (unison) Merciful and Gracious God, you call us to fullness of life but we have settled for much less. We have wandered from your ways, wasted your gifts, ignored the pain of others, and turned our faces from injustice. At times, we have hidden from the truth, especially when it calls us to do what we are afraid to do. We have created safe spaces for ourselves, without concern for those outside. We have given up in despair when the problems of the world overwhelm us. Forgive us. Give us courage to listen and respond when you call. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Declaration of Forgiveness (Responsive)Leader: Alleluia! Glory be to the Holy One who can make all things new! People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Alleluia!

STEPHEN MINISTRYCONTROL: TO EXERCISE DIRECTING INFLUENCE, POWER, AND AUTHORITY OVER CONDITIONS

Humans like to be in control, having the power to choose exactly what is going to happen and when. Unfortunately, life isn’t like that—we only think we’re in control. So when something happens and we realize we’re not in control, we feel lost, overwhelmed, angry, even terrified. If you are feeling pressure pertaining to a situation in your life - or know someone who is - and would like to learn more about how Stephen Ministry can support you or a friend, please contact Rev. Michelle Junkin, our Associate Pastor for Congregational Care, or Glenn Dunn, our Commissioned Lay Pastor.

S.P.A.R.K. NEEDS YOUR HELP!S.P.A.R.K. serves 22 students, first- through third-graders, from Horace Mann Elementary School. The program meets at the SPARK house on NW 43rd Street, south of the church, on Monday through Wednesday from 4 until 5:30 PM. SPARK kids get a snack and a meal, participate in art and recreation, and work with an individual tutor. Each tutor works for a half hour with each of three students, assisting with homework, and with reading books and playing educational games that S.P.A.R.K. provides.

The S.P.A.R.K. program needs volunteers who can fill in when a tutor cannot attend on his or her scheduled day. The time commitment is minimal, and the benefits are tremendous. Contact Marilyn Edens at [email protected].
