For more than fifty years, Rockwell has pioneeredin valve research, developing improved products tokeep pace with the increasingly demanding needsof industry. This background of valve experience, which has made Rockwell Nordstrom Valves thestandard of quality the world over, has led to thedevelopment of valve Sealants that work efficientlyover a wide range of service, pressure and tempera-ture conditions.

The heart of the Rockwell Nordstrom Valve is itsdry fi1m coated plug working hand in hand withthe proper Sealant to obtain the ultimate in valveperformance. In designing this valve, extensive

development testing with modern materials led tothe selection of a facing material of exceptionallylow coefficient of friction that is thermally bondedto the metal surfaces of the plug. This coating nowgiues a permanent separation of metal surfaces of plugand body, minimizing sticking, and assists in easieroperation. However, to insure maximum shutoffperformance at ail times, it is best to provide thesevalves with a regular program of Rockwell Seaiantinjection. This combination of permanent dr5, fiImcoating plus Sealant gives Nordstrom all the opera-tional and shutoff features required by today'svalve users.

FUNCTIONS OF SEALANT1. PLUG JACKING

The fr,rndamental operating principle of the Rockwell Nold-strom Valve design Iies in the application of Pascal's Law. ThisIaw states that a uirit presstlre applied to the liquid contained in-asealed vessel is traiismitted tn et'e.y part of the liquid withundiminished force, thus multiplying the force many times, depending on the alea ofthe interior ofthe vessel. The Sealant,rt

^det p..I.rre developed by tulning the Rockwellfitting or by a

f'ew stiokes of a sealant g.,n. supplies the hydraulic means forlifting the plug from its tapered- ieat when and if that force isneeded to free the plug.

2. RENEWABLE SEAT-No need to tear down valve or removeit f rom the line.

The Sealant, really a stluctulal part of the valve, provides aflexible and renewable seat, eliminating necessity of force fitcontacts to effect a seal. Fol this pulpose, the Sealant not onlymust have proper plasticity, brtt also resistance to line fluidssuch as sol, renis an? chemicials. This forms a seal trround eachbody port even undel pressule.

3. DROP.TIGHT IMPERVIOUS SEAL.To secure an absolutely tight impervious seal, the film of

Sealant works hand in hand with the permanent dry film coatingto folm a seal between plug and body. This seal is formed bySealant transmitted in a "sealdport" system of grooves aroundeach part. With proper selection of Rockwell Sealant, for yourparticirlar selvic^e, this tight seal can lle letained ovel a widei'ange of temperatures and plessules.

ROCKWELL SEALANTS

Rockwell Sealants are products of years of research anddevelopment. Time tested by actual use in millions of RockwellNordstrom valves now in the field, Rockwell Sealants haveproven to be the best for the services for which they arerecommended.

The Sealants listed on pages 4 and 5 are adequate for.prac-tically all services except a relatively few special requirementsfor which we will be glad to make recommendations on request.Included in this listing are No. 234 Silicone Sealant for unusualor extreme service conditions; No. 281 Fluorosilicone Sealantfor low temperature service where chemical stability is required;and No. 660 Fluorocarbon Sealant of outstanding chemicalstability.

Rockwell Sealants are availably in Stick, Bulk and Gun Pakform. Not all Sealants are made in all three forms since in somecases to do so would mean reduction of solvent-resisting orchemical-resisting properties; in other cases satisfactory viscosityor temperature range could not be maintained. The tables onpage 4 and 5 show the forms in which each individual Sealantis supplied.

Stick Sealants are identified by letters "A", "B", "C", "D","G", "J" and "K" denoting size with a number indicating theformula. Sticks are packed in boxes of ?A each as listed hereinexcept for size "J" which is packed 6 sticks per box and size"K" which is packed 12 sticks per box. The dimension tablesin valve catalogs show the size of Sealant sticks required forevery valve listed.

For use in 400-D Handguns as described on page 11, mostSealants are available in size "J" sticks and Gun Paks whichare designed to fit the gun barrels. ("K" sticks are for the 400-AHandgun.)

234 sealant is available in bulk tubes. One tube fits all sizesand types of Rockwell Nordstrom valves and simplifies inven-tory problems. Sealant in tubes is always kept fresh with nochance for contamination by dirt or grit.

Bulk Sealants in five quart (4.7 liters) cans are for use inHypreguns where larger quantities of Sealant are required. Alsoavailable are bulk Sealants in five gallon (18.9 liters) pails, 30gallon (113.6 liters) drums and fifty-five gallon (208 liters)drums. This bulk form is regularly supplied in a soft consistencyfor normal use in pumping equipment. For extreme conditions, such as cold weather, where regular bulk Sealants might be tooviscous for ready use, bulk Sealants are available on specialorder in a special soft consistency for easier pumping. Thesespecial soft Sealants are indicated by the suffix letters "SS"following the formula number. The formulas in which this con-sistency is available are specified on pages 4 and 5.

ASSEM BLY SEALANT_ITS PURPOSERockwell plug valves, as received by the purchaser, unless

otherwise specified, are filled with what is termed an "assem-bly" Sealant. This assembly Sealant, made especially fortesting purposes, is suitable for certain types ofseivices but isnot intended to handle all line fluids and operating conditionssuch as may be encountered in actual service. It is essential, therefore, for proper performance that all valves be servicedbefore being installed with the proper Sealant recommendedfor the service conditions. This may be determined by refer-ence to Pages 4 through 9.

Where so specified on the order, standard price Sealantssuitable for actual operating conditions will be injected intovalves without disassembly at no extra charge. In such cases, either the Sealant formula number or full details of line fluidto be handled and the temperature must be specified.

Dismantling, cleaning out and complete packing of valveswith proper Sealant is sometimes necessary for satisfactoryuse ofspecial price Sealants such as the Silicone and Fluoro-carbon forrnulas or for hazardous applications such as nitrat-ing acids and oxygen, or for other special applications such asfood and pharmaceutical materials. This is an extra chargeservice and must be specified. An extra charge will be madefor any special price Sealants used in valves at the pur-chaser's request.

DYNAMIC BALANCETM PLUG VALVESRockwell's new Dynamic Balance plug valve is designed to provide predict-able low torque operation without requiring periodic maintenance.

The Dynamic Balance valve design provides metal-to-metal seating for tightshut-off. Dynamic Balance valves are equipped with a sealant back-up systemfor bubble-tight shut-off on hard-to-hold gases and liquids. Sealant must beinjected into the Dynamic Balance valve either by using Rockwell Gun Paksand a sealant hand gun or in bulk form using a Rockwell-Hypregun - theDynamic Balance valve will not accept sealant in stick form.

THERE ARE 3 WAYS TO SERVICE ROCKWELL

SEALANT MAINTENANCE

Periodic application of sealant to Rockwell Nordstrom Valves is the only recommended maintenance neces-

sary under normal conditions. Sealant is essential to the proper operation of the valve. As the actual softbearing seat of the valve, it requires replacement when depleted due to conditions of temperature, pressure orfrequency of service.

Sealant maintenance means injecting enough sealant into a valve to provide a sealant film between taperedplug and body to minimize sticking.

MANUAL INJECTION

Stick sealants and tube sealants are used for manual injection. (Note: only Sealant No. 234 is available in tube form.)

Valve dimension pages in Rockwell Nordstrom catalogs show stick sizes required. Be sure to choose the proper Rockwell

Sealant for the service considering line product, pressure and temperature.

How to inject Sealant manually:

1. Remove Rockwell fitting or lubricant screw.

2. Insert Rockwell Sealant from the tube into the stem or choose the correct size of Rockwell Sealant stick and place it intothe stem.

3. Replace the fitting and screw down with a wrench until the sealant system is filled completely. This isdetermined by the resistance produced by the sealant pressure. Larger valves will require several sticksor tubes of sealant due to the capacity of their sealant systems.

4. Continue to add sealant until the plug lifts (sometimes with a hissing sound) indicating the sealant systemis full. When the plug lifts, efiort to turn the lubricating screw will be noticeably reduced.

5. If the plug fails to respond or continues to be difficult to turn, check "Valve Maintenance Procedures,"Catalog V-175.

ROCKWELL FITTING AS A SEALANT SCREW

The one piece Rockwell Fitting in Nordstrom Valves can also be used to maintain sealant pressure betweenmechanical injection periods if used as a sealant screw. After the valve is properly lubricated, remove the lubri-cant screw, insert another stick of sealant and screw the fitting down until the fitting threads are totally en-

gaged in the stem. The fitiing will then extend one or two inches, providing that much more sealant capacityin the stem. The additional sealant capacity can be used as an auxiliary reservoir for further lubrication. Thevalve can then be pressurized by screwing in the fitting as a sealant screw as explained under "Manual Injec-tion." When the fitting is finally turned into the valve as far as it will go, it indicates additional sealant shouldbe added.

IMPORTANT: EXTREME CAUTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PREVENT ANY FOREIGN MATTERFROM ENTERING THE ROCKWELL NORDSTROM VALVE'S SEALANT SYSTEM.

ROCKWELL HYPREGUN

Where a large number of valves are in service, the Rockwell Hypregunis recommended. It is filled by using bulk 5 quart ('4.7 liters) sealant

cans which are loaded directly into the Hypregun. It is self-priming, airoperated and is designed to meet extensive field maintenance require-

ments. For in-formation, request Catalog V-118 "Rockwell Hypregunfor Servicing Rockwell Nordstrom Valves."

How to inject SEALANT with a Hypregun:

1. Choose the proper sealant in a 5 quart ( 4.7 liters) can and load it into the Hypregun'

2. Attach the button head coupler as illustrated in Step 2 Hand Gun (page 11) '

FREQUENCY OF SEALANT INJECTION

1. Service whenever opening or closing: valves on all hotservices, valves handling corrosive fluids or gases' gas

drips or sand drains and valves very infrequently used,

such as on domestic gas distribution systems,

2. Service each tour: valves on drilling-mud lines.

3. Service weekly: valves installed in refineries' gasolineplants, compressor plants and processing plants of anynature.

4. Service monthly: valves on gas, crude and productstransmission lines.

5. Valves on crude, lube oil or vegetable oils require less

frequent attention.

NOTES_GENERAL1. Sealant is essential to the proper operation of the valve.

2. Maximum valve performance in corrosive or erosive service is dependent upon the proper

selection of sealant and the material construction of the valve'

3. Consider only sealants 147 and 660 for nitrating acids or mixed acids.

4. On severe services, valves should be lubricated with proper sealant prior to shipment'

USE ROCKWELL STEM PACKINGFOR ROCKWELL-NORDSTROM HYPRESEAL VALVES

HYPRESEAL STEM PACKING --For seatins stem onty.

_. Hypre-seal stem packing is a plastic composition containing a

fibrous filler. It is used to seal the stems of Hypreseal valv;sand, is injected through the packing injection fittings on Hypre-seal valve bodies. Stem Packing 904 was developed for lowtemperature service. Stem Packing 901 is a general servicepacking and is used in all vaives unless a special packing isspecified due to a need for chemical resistance, low tempera-ture. etc.

Not a sealant,

Stem Packing 901 is available in sizes BB, CC, andDD and ispacked in boxes containing 24 sticks. Size AA is available in 24"length only. Data sheets in the valve catalogs show the sizestick needed for each valve confisuration and size.

*Very high temperatures will causethe gradual dissipation ofthe plastic base ofa stem packing. Addition of more packing will become necessary after prolongedexposure until enough fibrous material forms a permanent seal at elevated temperatures.

How to repack Hypreseal Valves with Plastic Stem packing:

1. Remove packing injector screw" In-sert a new stick of Rockwell stempacking into the fitting.
