Recently I was speakingwith a viewer who recog-nized the delicate nature of scheduling British comedies; he noted, “everyone has their favorite.” This is very true!

What is your favorite? Keeping Up Appearances holds a special place with me. It was one of my grandmother’s favorites; among the many Britcoms she enjoyed on her public television station in upstate New York. With mixed emotions I report that in July, we are wrapping up our two-year run with Hyacinth and her family; however, I promise that we will bring back the Buckets of Keeping Up Appearances before too long.

So, what’s next for the Bigger British Comedy Block? By request we are dusting off Are you Being Served? The department store antics of that classic will be paired up with a brand-new British comedy, Upstart Crow. In this new series, we follow Williams Shakespeare during the Bard’s fictional early life. More details to come soon on the two more British comedies joining (most) Saturday nights this fall.

While we’re talking about British comedy, I would be remiss not to point out the upcoming special Monty Python’s Best Bits. Celebrating the cultural legacy and influence of the troupe, this special pairs their original material with new and entertaining commentary from celebrities who consider Monty Python hugely significant, both personally and to the history of screen satire. Laugh along with some of their best bits Saturday, June 5 at 8pm.
