Page 5: Qutopia General Quiz

It is the place where Muhammad, leading the prayer, is said to have been commanded to change the direction of prayer (qibla) from Jerusalem to Mecca. Thus it uniquely contained two prayer niches (mihrabs). Recently the mosque was renovated, removing the old prayer niche facing Jerusalem and leaving the one facing Mecca.

X was invented by Sylvan Goldman in 1938 and was designed to encourage people to buy more. But initial testing showed that men thought them effeminate while women found them ‘unstylish’. Goldman hired people to use them aimlessly around to get shoppers used to the idea. It worked and the idea took off. By 1940 there was a seven-year waiting list  to buy them. Goldman died in 1984, worth $400 million. X?

It was an accident. I was wrestling a guy by the name of “The Grappler” Len Denton in Mid-South. I had him in a front facelock and I used to use a knee lift for my finisher. He went to shove me into the turnbuckles, but instead of me releasing him in the corner and hitting him with a knee lift as he staggered back, he stepped on my foot. I fell backwards and he fell on the inside of his face. I got up and realized I had something. Naming it was pretty simple. I picked up a USA Today one morning and the government was outlawing the poison.” — Jake “The Snake” Roberts. What?

In November 2011 a German citizen filed a lawsuit against Pope Benedict XVI after spotting the leader breaking a rule during his September visit to the German town of Freiburg. The man from Dortmund urged the Pope to be fined 2,500 euros (about $3,307) for disobeying a rule.

However, it was unclear whether the Pope would be held accountable to the law because of his German citizenship or spared because “He enjoyed diplomatic immunity as the head of a foreign state." The attorneys said that the move to press charges was not an attack on the church, but rather an effort to raise awareness of the law and increase enforcement. What law/rule did he break?

Franz Ferdinand decided to go to the hospital and visit the victims of Čabrinović's failed bombing attempt. In order to avoid the city centre, General Oskar Potiorek decided that the royal car should travel straight along the Appel Quay to the Sarajevo Hospital. However, Potiorek forgot to inform the driver, Leopold Loyka, about this decision. On the way to the hospital, Loyka took a right turn into Franz Josef Street.

Gavrilo Princip was standing near Moritz Schiller's cafe, when he spotted Franz Ferdinand's car as it drove past, having taken the wrong turn. After realizing the mistake, the driver put his foot on the brake, and began to reverse the car. In doing so the engine of the car stalled and the gears locked, giving Princip his opportunity. Princip stepped forward, drew his pistol (a .380 caliber FN Model 1910), and at a distance of about 1.5 m (five feet), fired twice into the car. Franz Ferdinand was hit in the neck and Sophie (who instinctively covered Franz's body with her own after the first shot) in the abdomen. They both died before 11:00.

The word X comes from the Latin term for ‘I will harm’. It is a harmless substance that creates harmful effects in a patient who takes it.  X’s reaction are undesirable reactions that a patient experiences as a result of administering a placebo; generated entirely by the subject's pessimistic belief that unpleasant consequences would occur.

An example of X effect would be someone who dies of fright after being bitten by a non-venomous snake. Anthropologists use the term ‘X ritual’ to describe a procedure, treatment, or ritual that has been performed (or a herbal remedy or medication that has been administered) with malicious intent, such as a curse. X?

Captain Edward X lived in the United States and was an engineer in the Air Force. He took part in engineering design tests. In 1949, officers were conducting project MX981 tests to determine how many Gs -- the force of gravity -- a human being could withstand.  Colonel John Paul Stapp, a physician volunteered for the test.

The first test after X hooked up his sensors to the harness produced a reading of zero -- all of the sensors had been connected incorrectly. For each sensor, there were two ways of connecting them, and each one was installed the wrong way.

When X discovered the mistake, he grumbled something about the technician, who was allegedly blamed for the foul-up. What did he say and what did this lead to?
