As we cruise into 2018, let me wish everyone a very Happy New Year! Although it may seem like just the start of another year, it is in fact a huge milestone for the Association as we conclude our 110th Anniversary celebrations of 2017.
As you will read on pages 6–12, the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference and AA 110th Anniversary Dinner were organised with great success. At the conference, a diverse range of road safety topics were covered extensively, illustrating the importance
cooperation is needed from every arm of the industry, including other automotive-related organisations, knowledge and service providers, the authorities and motorists themselves; it cannot be the sole effort of the Association.
The AA 110th Anniversary Dinner was held at the end of the one-and-a-half-day conference, and we were delighted to share a special birthday celebration for the Association that night as we cut into the birthday cake, which weighed more than 100kg (check page 12 to see a photo).
Those who have gone on driving trips overseas would have noticed that different countries have their own unique driving cultures — and some practices can leave you bewildered! On page 24, read more about some unusual road rules that apply in other parts of the world.
If you are planning to go for a road trip soon, it would be helpful to know the different types of tyres best suited to handle the various terrains and seasons. Page 28 has that information for you.
As Chinese New Year is just around the corner in February, see what our 2018 privileges have in store to help you prepare for the upcoming festivities. And if you want to give your car a makeover, our car detailing service provides the perfect gloss and shine to impress your relatives this season. To book an appointment, see page 65.
Have a pleasant and safe motoring year in 2018.

have always been curious about what those numbers printed on a car tyre mean. However, I am just a functional motorist — all I care about is getting from point A to point B in one piece in a shorter time than via public transport — so I have not had a chance to
satisfy that curiosity… until now. The article on page 28 will clue you

With the popularity of our Autoventure tours, we know Singaporeans are keen to travel and drive in foreign places. AA Singapore always advocates following local road rules no matter

Speaking of Autoventure, one tour will be heading down to Tasmania in March. With stunning scenery and delicious local produce, you are guaranteed to have a great time!
But wherever we end up driving, we should always be considerate of other road users. That’s the message our regular column Safety Matters (page 18) wishes to convey this issue; it shines a spotlight on the increasing likelihood that motorists like you will have to share space with people on bicycles and personal mobility devices.
Let all of us road users learn to share the limited space we have been allocated. Here’s to a safe and accident-free 2018.

CELEBRATING 110 YEARS IN STYLE
The Automobile Association of Singapore (AA Singapore) turned 110 in 2017, a milestone celebrated throughout the year with numerous events, including an Autoventure drive. The celebrations ended with the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference 2017 and AA 110th Anniversary Dinner.

THE CONFERENCE Renowned speakers and road safety experts from around the world convened in Singapore to share their insights at the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference 2017. Held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on 20 and 21 October, the event attracted more than 200 participants.
Apart from showcasing the latest developments in mobility
technology, the event was aimed at encouraging dialogue among government authorities, road safety professionals, automotive manufacturers and other relevant industry players. Points brought up by the speakers as well as during panel discussions and a networking session shared a common goal: to make the roads safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

I am grateful for the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference. I travel extensively and recently attended
two other conferences by government and private organisations, neither of which
was comparable to your conference in terms of price, smooth registration, baggage collection, conference contents and smiling staff. The conference timing and topics were
just right; most importantly, I felt very welcome. The outdoor exhibits were intriguing, too.
I applaud the organising team and look forward to another interesting AA
conference in the future.

SHARING THE ROADS People on bicycles and personal mobility devices are going to be taking to public roads more than ever. Regular motorists need to learn to share the limited driving space here.
Cycling and the use of personal mobility devices (PMDs) are becoming increasingly popular in
Singapore. As a motorist, you are likely to
be familiar with the sight of cyclists on driving lanes. Perhaps you even had to avoid a PMD user who weaved in and out of a pathway.
Conversely, if you’re a cyclist, venturing onto the roads here is akin to swimming in the ocean with sharks. You would have to face motorists who are not accustomed to sharing the roads, all the while feeling vulnerable because you are at risk of getting run over by reckless drivers.
Not surprisingly, there have been numerous run-ins between cyclists, PMD riders, drivers and pedestrians. Government agencies have reported receiving 600
SAFETY MATTERS
2017, cyclists and PMD users now have clear guidelines on their rights and responsibilities. Essentially, this means they can now be held accountable by law if they act irresponsibly. As a PMD user or a potential future user, we should also get to know key aspects of the bill. As with all new regulations, there will be a period of adjustment. But we can all agree it is a move in the right direction to keep all road users safe. EDUCATION AND AWARENESS A clear understanding of how to use shared spaces is useful in preventing accidents.
Just as motorists are required to learn the rules of using the roads, cyclists and PMD users should be encouraged to abide by them as well.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will soon launch a
90-minute Safe Riding Programme for cyclists and users of PMDs that equips participants with the knowledge and skills
to navigate crowded areas safely and graciously. Trainers
will guide participants through a fun integrated circuit, where they get to practise essential skills and learn the rules and code of

is that bicycles and PMDs are deemed an essential part of Singapore’s quest to go car-lite; not only are they here to stay, their numbers are set to grow even more. Moving forward, the best thing to do is learn to coexist so that all road users, including pedestrians, can remain safe.

What happens when diesel is used in a petrol engine
in that situation?
RIGHT CAR, WRONG FUEL
Do you remember that episode of the reality TV show, The Amazing Race, where one of the
contestants pumped petrol into a diesel car? Needless to say, the car broke down after a while. It was not a pretty sight — and it could happen to you!
WHEN YOU PUT PETROL IN A DIESEL ENGINEIf you put petrol in a diesel car, you need to act quickly. If you drive away or even start the car with petrol in the mix, you could be dealing with potentially costly damage to the engine.
A diesel engine has parts, such as the fuel injection pump, that depend on the diesel’s lubricating properties to run smoothly. Petrol, acting as a solvent when mixed with diesel, has the opposite effect — it increases friction between parts, causing damage to the fuel lines and pump.
Unfortunately, it takes a while for a diesel engine to begin showing signs of processing the wrong fuel. This may start with the emission of black smoke — due to unburnt fuel — before sluggishness and stalling set in. Your car will most likely not be able to start after that.
KNOW YOUR CAR
WHEN YOU PUT DIESEL IN A PETROL ENGINEPutting diesel in a petrol engine isn’t as bad, since diesel needs to be compressed before it’ll ignite. Chances are, you may not even be able to start the engine. Additionally, diesel pump nozzles tend to be larger than most petrol fuel necks, so putting diesel in a petrol car doesn’t happen all that often.
But let’s say you manage to drive off. The diesel, which is heavier and oilier than petrol, will
quickly. This will cause your car to shudder and maybe stall. The next part to get affected would be the spark plugs. Your car will most likely start to emit white smoke and lose power before it stalls completely.
REMEDIAL ACTIONIf it is your lucky day and you realise your mistake before starting the engine, DO NOT start the engine. DO NOT even put the key in the ignition.
Arrange for your car to be towed to a workshop and seek help from professionals to drain
your fuel tank.If you didn’t realise the error
and drive off with the wrong fuel in the tank, it will only be a matter of time before your car stalls. Call AA for roadside assistance as you would a regular breakdown.

If you think that driving in a foreign land is all about right-hand or left-
hand drive, think again. In this article, we go over the ups and downs
of some interesting driving rules applicable in other countries.

QUIRKY DRIVING LAWS
KEEP IT ON Have you ever driven topless? No? Well, keep it that way in these spots.
New York, USABefore you head to the beach, know that it is illegal to undress in your car while in Sag Harbor, New York. Despite being a popular spot for beachgoers, the town authorities frown on folks who don’t keep their clothes on while in public. Offenders risk spending three months in jail.
Thailand Despite Thailand’s blistering heat, anyone caught driving a car while topless will be slapped
must take note of this rule, which extends to the tuk-tuk.

RussiaDon’t drive dirty in Russia. Keep your vehicle spick and span or risk

San Francisco, USAThis only applies to car wash centres. They are forbidden by law from drying cars with used underwear. For private car renters like us, however, we are free to use as many pairs of tighty-whities as we want.

ENSURE VISIBILITY When driving, it is important to have the best visibility possible from behind the wheel. Some countries take road safety measures a little more seriously.
Scandinavia Keep your headlights on 24/7 when driving in Sweden and Norway — yes, even if the sun is out. This is to ensure visibility in case of fog, sleet, snow or hail. Be prepared during winter as there could be no daylight for weeks in some parts of Scandinavia.
Alabama, USAJust in case you were planning to put your ninja or kung fu skills to the test, it is illegal to drive blindfolded in Alabama. Why was there a need for such a law, we wonder?
STOCK UP ON UNUSUAL ITEMS All packed for a road trip? Double check that you have these items on hand while driving in these countries.
Spain No matter how light your prescription is, Spain requires you to carry a spare pair of spectacles in your car at all times. This is on top of the spare tyre and spare bulbs as well as a set of tools your car ought to be stocked with.

Germany It’s illegal to stop on Germany’s famed road system, the Autobahn, so top up your tank before entering these high-speed roads. If your car breaks down, get into the emergency lane before calling for help.
New Jersey, USA In New Jersey, the law bans motorists from pumping their own petrol due to “safety concerns”. However, here’s the real reason:
In the 1940s, petrol station operators became unhappy when a competitor lowered fuel prices for drivers who were willing to pump it themselves. A bill banning self-serve petrol was quickly pushed through, and prices went back up.

Whatever car you drive, its performance is dependent on the quality of the tyres and the grip they provide. After all, tyres are the only part of the vehicle that make contact with the ground.
BUY THE RIGHT TYRES
F E A T U R E
The lifespan of a tyre depends on its design as well as the climate, road conditions and how well
it has been maintained. It is also affected by the way you drive. If you drive like you are in a Formula One race, you will obviously wear out your tyres faster. If you drive cautiously, your tyres should last
or more, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year by a professional.
While we cannot control factors such as strong sunlight, potholes and other obstacles, we can do our part to do routine maintenance
and avoid bad moves such as emergency braking and quick starts. It is recommended that you check your tyres at least once a month as well as before and after long road trips. It is good to make this a habit even if your tyres are new.
If you are wondering whether it is time to change the tyres, start by doing the following checks:
Look at your tyres: Check for uneven tread wear or shallow tread and inspect for holes or damaged valve caps. You should also look out for rocks, nails and other small bits that may have lodged in the tyres — these will damage your tyres over time.
Pay attention to the feel of your tyres when driving:indicates that your tyres may be worn or damaged. If you notice vibrations or other disturbances, reduce speed immediately and drive cautiously until you can safely stop somewhere to inspect your tyres. If a tyre is damaged, replace it with your spare one. If you cannot identify the problem, take your vehicle to a workshop for a thorough inspection.
KNOW YOUR TYRESEverything you need to know about your tyre is on it.
29H I G H W A Y
Look at the sidewall of a tyre and you will notice numbers and letters that look like a code, for example, 205/55R16 91V. Here’s a breakdown of what each portion of this alphanumeric string means:• ‘205’ is the width of the tyre in
millimetres
means the height of the tyre’s sidewall as a percentage of its width, i.e. 55% of 205mm; the lower the ratio, the smaller the sidewall height, which means better cornering but a rougher ride
• ‘R’ stands for radial construction, which is the industry standard for passenger cars, while ‘16’ is the diameter of the rim in inches that
also be ‘D’ for diagonal or ‘B’ for belted
• ‘91’ is the load index, which refers to the maximum load-carrying capabilities of a tyre. A load index of 91 means the tyre can carry 615kg
• The alphabet at the end indicates the speed rating, which ranges from A to Y. In this example, ‘V’ indicates that the vehicle can travel safely at up to 240km/h on that tyre
The above information is probably adequate for your

high-performance tyres. These offer superior grip, traction and responsiveness in all conditions and at higher speeds. It goes without saying that they also wear out very quickly, so be sure to regularly check them as the compound and tread patterns on such tyres don’t last as long as normal road tyres.
If your idea of stress relief is taking road trips to Malaysia, you may want to consider getting tyres with good high-speed braking performance, comfort in terms of reduced vibration and noise levels, as well as responsiveness for safety at higher speeds. For 4WD or off-road vehicles going on rough terrains, you can choose all-terrain tyres. But if you are

WHAT TYRES FOR YOUR DRIVING STYLE?For those who like the idea of a leisurely drive that is quiet and comfortable, look for tyres that specify ‘low noise’, ‘comfort’ or ‘smooth ride’. If you drive mostly in the city, your tyres should have the ability to handle constant start/stop demands as well as have less rolling resistance to reduce fuel usage.

European-made hatchbacks combine practicality with pizzazz and won’t break the bank.
In 2012, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new range of A Class models to tap into a more youthful demographic.
Its resounding success indicated that the marquee brand was on the right track. Several years down the road and the German giant of the automotive world continues to up the ante with a range of improvements.
The A Class features Dynamic Select, which offers drivers a choice of four modes of driving: Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. This feature allows the setting of options in combination with a new suspension with adaptive damping (optional). Acceleration sensors measure the vehicle’s body movements, calculate damping characteristics and electronically adjust the shock absorber — individually for each wheel — for an optimal ride.
The design philosophy of ‘sensual purity’ is evident in the A Class; the striking lines,
dynamically curved surfaces and coupe-like windows give the car a smart, sporty silhouette. The diamond grille, LED high-performance headlamps (optional) and tail lamps with dual tailpipe trim integrated into the bumper is taken from the 2011 concept vehicle from which the rejuvenated A Class was developed, giving it a futuristic touch.

Volkswagen faces a happy conundrum with the Golf: how do you keep improving on a model that owners already love? Their answer, in the form of the 2017 reboot, is to provide sharpened design elements while offering technological innovations.
The latest generation includes four variants — TSI, Comfortline, Highline and R-Line — and is completed by a new GTI and Golf R. The facelifted models come with front and rear bumpers and new halogen and LED headlamps, providing a new alliance between the radiator grille and headlights.

This enables the driver to scroll through the main menu, change radio stations, scroll through the playlist or browse the Picture Viewer and in music albums (Cover Flow). Less time on the screen means more on the wheel for safer driving.
Engine-wise, a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine is available in Singapore. Standard on the Golf TSI, it can produce 110PS of power and an impressive 200Nm of torque. With combined fuel consumption of just 5.0 litres/100km, and emitting only 114g/km of CO2, the TSI is arguably one of the most eco-conscious cars on the road.
Safety systems that were previously found only in higher-end models are now standard in the VW Golf. The proactive occupant protection system detects potential accidents like the initiation of hard braking, then activates brake assistant,

FALL IN LOVE WITHTASMANIA
The stunning natural landscapes, idyllic farms and excellent produce will have you wanting to prolong your visit to this Australian state.
WOR DS M EL ISSA DE S I LVA
Lovingly referred to as “Tassie” by locals, the state of Tasmania comprises a main island surrounded by 334
smaller ones. They are separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait. At around 64,000km2, the main island is the 26th largest island in the world. The state is named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman,
European sighting of the island on 24 November 1642.
The pristine environment of
landscapes and intriguing wildlife, including the iconic Tasmanian devil.
C U R R I N G A F A R M A visit to this working sheep farm one hour away from Hobart on the main highway to Strahan will clue you in on the daily activities required in the rearing of these woolly fellows. You can watch sheep being sheared and observe how farm dogs shepherd herds of sheep. The 750-acre property has even won a number of awards for sustainable farming practices.
Look forward to being hosted by the husband-and-wife team of Tim and Jane Parsons, who are sixth-generation farmers. Of course, you can buy Tasmanian wines, lanolin hand creams and high-quality woollen merchandise at the farm’s store.

The rather steep uphill trek of about 1.3km along the track in Freycinet National Park is well worth it.
The Park is located on Freycinet Peninsula, which is one of Tasmania’s most striking coastal areas, thanks to its rugged beauty. The spectacular features you can see in the Park comprise granite, which is rare in Tasmania. The peaks you see as you enter the Park are
reasons! At this popular attraction,
2016 Australian Tourism Awards, you’ll likely see a variety of birds as many live here or treat the Freycinet area as a stopover point. You may even catch a glimpse of a white-bellied sea eagle soaring in the skies or witness an Australasian gannet diving into the sea to catch its lunch.

St Columba Falls State Reserve, home to St Columba Falls.
The Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Tasmania. That may be because it’s one of the tallest in the state, with a drop of over 90m. The beautiful forests and wooded hills of the reserve are an attraction in their own right, lush with beech, myrtle, sassafras and tree fern. Many visitors also come here to enjoy the tumbling waters of the South George River, which falls over steep granite ledges.

650,000 plants in rows that stretch for 200km! The variety that grows here is authentic French lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, the only variety suitable for perfume and cooking. When you visit this farm, you’ll get the chance to see how
dried. Those that are not dried are reserved for distillation, to extract their aromatic oil.
There is an interesting story behind this farm. It originated with a London perfumer named C K Denny, who migrated to Tasmania with his family in 1921.
He brought with him a packet of lavender seeds from the southern French Alps, the source of true French lavender. C K realised that the similar climate between the lavender-growing regions of Provence, France, and Tasmania, Australia, would enable him to make his dream of producing the best lavender in the world come true. He and his family started Bridestowe Estate with
short distance away from where the current farm is. Traditionally, in Europe, lavender is grown in straight rows and planted by seed rather than cuttings. The family discovered that planting in curved rows helped to make the most of the rainfall and reduce erosion. They also used cuttings instead of seeds, which enabled them to control the lavender oil quality and produce a high-quality product consistently.
Their gift shop has heaps of lovely things to buy as presents, from skin creams, soaps and linen sachets to lavender pancakes and teas to their mascot Bobbie Bear’s heat packs.

The Sanctuary is situated on a property that has largely been left wild, so it has an abundance of eucalyptus trees, myrtle forests and mountain grasslands. These are important natural habitats for Tasmanian devils and other marsupials. The western side of the sanctuary faces Reynolds Falls and Vale of Belvoir Reserved Land, which provide an undisturbed
