    Question two

How effective is the combination of

    your main product with ancillarytexts?

After completing my music video, I wanted to tie

in my print productions with it, using both

generic aspects and similarities that can be

made throughout both my print production and

    music video.

    Digi-paks

One way I achieved this was the background to

my digi-paks, which are various cuttings from

newspapers, which can be seen in my music

    video- seen bottom right

Linking print productions to a music video can

be also seen in artists like Greendays album

Wake Me Up When September Ends

To view the video click here

These media texts are linked together

because the album cover shows Billie Joe

singing who wrote the song When

September Ends about his father who

passed away. To view more about this

    of it.

    Throughout my digi-paks

I used the newspapers cuttings in the background to suggest there's more to

the music video that first perceived. Many newspapers exaggerate in various

articles about what really happened, this would be done so it would attract

more peoples attention as the exaggerated article would stand out from the

rest. This can be seen more evidently in The Daily Mailand their view on the

youth of today. From the image in the bottom left the newspaper is clearly

exaggerating the youth and how troubled they are. Revealing there is more to

the story than first thought, this is an aspect that I included in my print

production, that there is something more to this music video than first

    thought.

    PANEL ONE

Another link to the music video that can be seen in my print production is

Brian Korteling who is seen in panel one and three, again, linking the artist in

with the music video, and creating a familiarity for the audience of who the

artist is, so when it comes to viewing the music video, or buying the print

production they know who it is, rather than having to remember a name,

they can just recognise the face.

Linking in with Goodwins Theory, there is a strong recurring motif, that is

when an artist begins to create a brand style for themselves so that they

become widely recognised by the audience. Another recurring motif is the

newspaper cuttings which are a visualisation of the title of the track as seen

    bottom left.

    PANEL TWO

This was the last panel to be created and I thought it should be a signify the

genre. This is where the insert of close up of the acoustic guitar came in,

originally from the video, (bottom right) but after applying effects it was

applied in panel two. (bottom left)

I feel the use of the guitar signifies the genre well because it is used in folk a

lot, due to its simply nature and its traditional roots.

I added a little blurb to the bottom of the panel to introduce him, so the

audience can identify with him, and so the artist can make a name for

    himself.

Again, the use of the newspaper cuttings is evident as a recurring motif.

    An example

One example of how an artist signifies their

genre through the print production is a album

    by Sum41 called Pieces

From this cover art, the genre is pretty

well signified as a heavy rock & punk band

as the creature on the cover is wearing

clothes that reveal a heavy rock identity.

The colour red also signifies rage and

madness something that is seen in

Sum41s songs. The use of the circular

pattern is to add a sense of visual

    confusion and craziness that would

connote the genre of the band.

    PANEL THREE

In this panel I got my inspiration from Sinad O Connor Nothing Compares 2

Useen bottom left. The simplicity of the shot was simply and effective as

well as being a great way to establish the artist.

I also changed the curves and colour balance in Photoshop to get the blue

    effect.

The colour dark blue represents knowledge, power and calmness which can

be reflected in the track. The name of the track connotes knowledge and

with knowledge comes power as said by Sir Francis Bacon, Knowledge is

    power.

    PANEL FOUR

My final panel stays with the folk genre and the track name information.

Firstly the effect of the newspaper cuttings to form the track names tie in

nicely with the music video as suggests information and written media

    texts.

The use of the blue newspaper background I feel shows itself most strongesthere and makes a visual link to the song.

Also the track names connote a sophistication about

the artist as they clearly have a deeper meaning to

them, as well as the song names being quite strange

which is something that recurs many times in folk

artists. For example, some of Bob Dylans songs: Ain't

No Man Righteous No Not One, Don't Think Twice It's

All Right and Rank Strangers To Me or Woody

Guthrie songs such as Debt I Owe The or Pictures

From Life's Other Side all suggest a sense of

refinement and ambiguity about the songs.

    ADVERT

The advert can be linked to all of the panels as well as the music video as itcontains some key aspects that connote the genre and track

Firstly the newspaper cuttings which I masked over his face using

Photoshop reveal the narrative of the song as well as linking the advert to

the digipaks so the audience will be able to identify with the artist and his

    music.

Secondly the image of Brian Kortelings face is an inter-textual link to

Sinad O Connor Nothing Compares 2 Uas well as panel three, due to

the fact, as said before, it was a simply way to advertise the artist with

impact and speed. As the audience can glance at the advert

and realise who it is and then remember his music.

Also the effect I used in Photoshop has visually added a

aspect of the newspaper as the advert looks like a piece of

art paper and due to the smudge effect used looks as

    though its painted on.

    Conclusion

All of my print productions link in with my music

video, the main theme that links them all

together is the use of Brian Korteling and the

newspaper cuttings, these can be seen as both

recurring motifs as they create a style to

which Brian can be recognised from.
