PART B — (5 × 16 = 80 marks)

11. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below :

With increasing disposable incomes and a flourishing economy, holidaying

remains a popular trend driving travel and tourism. Indian travellers continue

to spend lavishly on travel and are keen to explore newer destinations. Travel

is further promoted by addition of capacity by airlines which are offering value

fares to the booming population of Indian travellers. Domestic tourism also has

grown in a big way with increased holidaying.

Ministry of Tourism, in efforts to tap the potential markets, extended the

facility for Visa on Arrival (VOA) to a further six countries, in addition to the

existing five in 2011. On top of the incredible India campaigns, the government

continued to raise interest in India by conducting trade shows in many

countries including Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangkok, Los Angeles, New York, and

Port of Spain. State governments are planning to promote each state as a

destination for different form of niche tourism. In line with this, the North-east

region would be promoted as a destination for adventure tourism and Jammu

and Kashmir would be promoted as a destination for pilgrimage tourism.

Medical tourism or health tourism is often described as rapidly growing

segment in the country. India is adequately equipped with state-of-the-art

hospital infrastructure and facilities to treat many critical illnesses. By now,

India has been able to establish as a favourite destination for many complex

surgeries like cosmetic surgery, joint replacement surgery, cardiac surgery and

like at very low cost in comparison to the developed countries. This indeed

gives great momentum for the hospitals in particular and tourism in general.

Many specialised hospitals and tour operators have already come up to

promote the medical tourism.

The core of wellness tourism in India is the ancient medical system of

Ayurveda combined with the system of Yoga. Indeed, many states in the

country have already taken great strides to promote wellness as a tourist

product. Wellness tourism may be described as travelling for the purpose of

revitalizing one’s health and spiritual well-being especially through alternative

healing practices.

India is often termed as hotspot of bio-diversity and this rich natural heritage

is unparalleled in many ways. Such valuable resource base gives impetus for

the practice of variety of alternate tourism forms and many of which are

already in existence. The national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere

reserves and a multitude of other natural settings are indeed avenues for not

only learning and experiencing the natures’ splendidly and life systems but

also a major source for great variety of adventure offerings

The urge for adventure is there in every human-being. Perhaps due to this

innate nature of man that adventure tourism is one of the most popular niche

segments of tourism industry. It is both a leisure pastime and serious hobby

and entails in general travelling to remote areas and exotic places to indulge in

learning and experiencing through activities with offering of higher risk and

thrills. Owing to India’s enormous geo-physical diversity, it has taken a big

shape over the years. Adventure tourism is very much a part of India’s tourism

policy and almost every State has definite programme to identify and promote

its adventure tourism potential.

The time has come to duly acknowledge the potential of tourism in the

development schemes of the country and position of as one of the engines of

socio-economic progress. While it may not be a panacea, it is certainly an

effective tool to negotiate with many issues of development that the country is

facing today. The Central and State Governments must come up with more

inclusive tourism policies and programmes to take the momentum forward and

derive better synergy of tourism and development. There is no dearth of

attractions, resources or manpower; rather the country has all of that in plenty

and in huge diversity. Leveraging these vast resource bases of the country for

building a qualitatively better and stronger tourism industry should provide a

winning proposition for all stakeholders, especially the common man.

12. (a) Read the passage and answer the question below :

From time to time new boat building methods are touted as a

breakthrough in boat construction. There have been several such

methods of fiberglass construction that have proven to be less than

advertised. The term FRP is generally accepted to mean fibre reinforced

plastic. The names fibreglass reinforced polyester, resin glass, and glass

reinforced plastic (GRP) are also used. This material is plastic and is

unique in that it is made by the user in situ. It is composed of a series of

reinforcements and liquid chemicals which when brought together in

specific proportions can be formed into strong, solid but flexible shapes.

By varying the quantities of the main components, the finished product

can achieve different properties to suit the desired application.

The material has been developed over the last forty years to have many

varied characteristics. A crude use is the casting of ornaments in slow

setting, filled resin with no reinforcement, aviation is at the other end of

the technology spectrum where whole wings of military fighters are made

of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. At the low technology end the property

of faithful reproduction is employed while at the other a very strong

lightweight structure is made to exacting standards. In between are

manufacturers of motor car bodies, furniture, pre-fabricated buildings

and boats who use combinations of the properties of faithful reproduction

and strength to varying degrees.

By changing the chemical composition of the resins and varying the

reinforcements, properties of finished FRP may be designed to suit

different applications. These may be heat or fire resistance, resistance to

acids and fuels, or to be taste and odour free for water or fish tanks.

Historically, FRP as a boatbuilding material was developed for military

purposes in North America in the late 1940’s. Early hulls were made by

draping the reinforcement over a pattern made of wood (male mould) and

painting on the resin. This was an era before catalysts were developed

when strong sunlight was used to make the composition harden. This is

called “curing”. From these crude beginnings faster curing resins were

developed followed by contact moulding with female moulds (materials

laid on the inside) for mass production.

Soon decks and interiors were being made of FRP so that boats were no

longer hand crafted in wood, piece by piece but bolted and bonded

together on an assembly line. The cost saving was realized by the

boatbuilding industry in the developed world to the extent that today

yachts, motorboats and small workboats in FRP are more popular than

wooden boats. FRP boats now available range in size from rowing boats

of 2 m to naval minesweepers of 80 m length and types from yachts

through commercial fishing boats to harbour tugs. In terms of materials

and modern production technology Sweden, France, United States and

Great Britain have the most to offer.

The prime reason in developed countries for the change to FRP was lower

production costs for small boats built in series. Industrialized countries

have the advantage of low raw materials costs (resin and reinforcement)

but the disadvantage of high labour costs. Therefore the opportunity to

change from labour intensive methods to a faster and less skilled

productions system was attractive.

(b) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :

Many great inventions are initially greeted with ridicule and disbelief.

The invention of the airplane was no exception. Although many people

who heard about the first powered flight on December 17, 1903 were

excited and impressed, others reacted with peals of laughter. The idea of

flying an aircraft was repulsive to some people. Such people called Wilbur

and Orville Wright, the inventors of the first flying machine, impulsive

fools. Negative reactions, however, did not stop the Wrights. Impelled by

their desire to succeed, they continued their experiments in aviation.

Orville and Wilbur Wright had always had a compelling interest in

aeronautics and mechanics. As young boys they earned money by making

and selling kites and mechanical toys. Later, they designed a newspaper-

folding machine, built a printing press, and operated a bicycle-repair

shop. In 1896, when they read about the death of Otto Lilienthal, the

brothers’ interest in flight grew into a compulsion.

Lilienthal, a pioneer in hang-gliding, had controlled his gliders by

shifting his body in the desired direction. This idea was repellent to the

Wright brothers, however, and they searched for more efficient methods

to control the balance of airborne vehicles. In 1900 and 1901, the Wrights

tested numerous gliders and developed control techniques. The brothers’

inability to obtain enough lift power for the gliders almost led them to

abandon their efforts.

After further study, the Wright brothers concluded that the published

tables of air pressure on curved surfaces must be wrong. They set up a

wind tunnel and began a series of experiments with model wings.

Because of their efforts, the old tables were repealed in time and replaced

by the first reliable figures for air pressure on curved surfaces. This

work, in turn, made it possible for the brothers to design a machine that

would fly. In 1903 the Wrights built their first airplane, which cost less

than $1,000. They even designed and built their own source of

propulsion-a lightweight gasoline engine. When they started the engine

on December 17, the airplane pulsated wildly before taking off. The plane

managed to stay aloft for 12 seconds, however, and it flew 120 feet.

By 1905, the Wrights had perfected the first airplane that could turn,

circle, and remain airborne for half an hour at a time. Others had flown

in balloons and hang gliders, but the Wright brothers were the first to

build a full-size machine that could fly under its own power.

As the contributors of one of the most outstanding engineering

achievements in history, the Wright brothers are accurately called the

fathers of aviation.

Wright brothers?

(2) How did the brothers develop an interest in flight?

vehicles in air?

gliders?

planes advanced through the years? (6)

11. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below :

Marine pollution includes a range of threats including from land-based sources, oil spills, untreated sewage, heavy siltation, eutrophication (nutrient enrichment), invasive species, persistent organic pollutants (POP’s), heavy metals from mine tailings and other sources, acidification, radioactive substances, marine litter, overfishing and destruction of coastal and marine habitats. Oil discharges and spills to the Seas has been reduced by 63% compared to the mid-1980’ies, and tanker accidents have gone down by 75%, from tanker operations by 90% and from industrial discharges by some 90%, partly as a result of the shift to double-hulled tankers. Some progress on reducing emissions of heavy metals is reported in some regions, while increased emissions are happening in others. Electronic waste and mine tailings are included amongst the sources of heavy metal pollution in Southeast Asia. Sedimentation has decreased in some areas due to reduced river flows as a result of terrestrial overuse for agricultural irrigation, while increasing in other regions as a result of coastal development and deforestation along rivers, water sheds and coastal areas and clearing of mangroves.

A major threat beyond overexploitation of fisheries and physical destruction of marine coastal habitats by dredging is undoubtedly the strong increase in coastal development and discharge of untreated sewage into the near-shore waters, resulting in enormous amounts of nutrients spreading into the sea and coastal zones. This, together with changes in salinity, melting sea ice, increased sea temperatures and future changes in sea currents may severely affect marine life and their ability to recover from extreme climatic events.

Major observed threats to the world’s coral reefs include extreme climate events, unsustainable tourism practices, poison fishing for ornamental fish, overexploitation by fisheries, sedimentation, coral harvesting, dynamite fishing and pollution (not in order of priority) the activities or conditions that are affecting various coral reefs throughout the world. The ‘Major Threats to Reefs’ shows a high percentage of reefs that are threatened by overexploitation, coastal development, inland pollution and marine pollution, and the degree to which they are under threat

Around 60% of the wastewater discharged into the Caspian Sea is untreated, in Latin America and the Caribbean the figure is close to 80%, and in large parts of Africa and the Indo-Pacific the proportion is as high as 80-90%. An estimated US$ 56 billion is needed annually to address this enormous wastewater problem. However, the costs to coral reefs, tourism and losses in fisheries and human health risks may be far more expensive. It is also the area where least progress is being made globally.

By 1975, many areas of mangrove had already been converted to agriculture. As thirty years pass, the agricultural areas expanded and more mangroves were converted to farms. At the same time, these agricultural areas are being converted to industrial and urban land use. Elsewhere along the Malaysian coastline, mangroves are rapidly being converted to commercial shrimp farms. Forestry Department statistics show that peninsular Malaysia had 85,800 hectares (214,500 acres) of mangrove swamp forests in 2003, down from 86,497 hectares just one year earlier. The coastal areas with the greatest population densities are also those with the most shoreline degradation or alteration.

12. (a) Read the following passage and answer the questions :

China’s rise as a shipbuilding power is awe inspiring. Within a span of five years

China has risen to become the third largest shipbuilding nation after South Korea

and Japan in terms of deliveries. In terms of order book size it has surpassed

Japan as well, indicating that it might soon be edging Japan out of its long held

second spot. China aims to become the world’s leading shipbuilding nation by

2015. The Chinese Government, through its two large companies - CSSC and

CSIC and host of other public/ private shipyards is adding massive capacities.

What have been the drivers for China growth story ? Chinese Shipyards have

been propelled by a combination of favourable Government policy and economic

factors. China is currently into its 11th five-year plan, which has a strong

emphasis on shipbuilding like the previous plan. The Government favours

domestic shipping lines such as COSCO purchasing ships from Chinese yards

and provides them with discounts and economical credit for the purpose. For

exports, the Government has other benefits such as VAT refund on export and

providing sovereign guarantee and low margin credit to ship buyers. China’s

biggest economic advantage is low labour cost. Even after incorporating

productivity differences, Chinese labour cost is around 50% of Korean and

Japanese labour. That China is the cheapest steel manufacturer in the world also

helps its yards to reduce cost and lower their shipbuilding prices in the global

market.

However, there are a few concerns. China still has to depend on imports for

60 % of raw materials. Government has set a target of reducing this to 30 % by

the end of the 11th five-year plan. Lack of technology is another obstacle that

Chinese yards have to overcome to get orders for complex vessels. To address it,

Chinese yards are tying up with Korean and Japanese yards for technology and

focussing on smaller and less complex vessels.

India also enjoys several of the advantages which have propelled emerging

countries such as China and Vietnam into the forefront of global shipbuilding.

Some of the key advantages that can be leveraged by shipbuilders in India are :

Low Labour Cost : Low labour cost is a key driving factor in shipbuilding

nations, as it accounts for more than 10% of the total cost. Indian labour costs

are on the lower side as compared to those of the leading shipbuilding nations.

Even after factoring in impact of productivity, Indian labour is substantially

cheaper than Korean and Chinese labour. More importantly, Indian labour cost is

growing at half the rate in China, which implies that India might continue to

have an edge over China in the future. Strong Domestic Demand : Indian

shipping trade is booming on the back of economic growth at the rate of

approximately 8%. Domestic shipping lines are expanding their fleets and have

placed orders with global yards. There is also a strong thrust in basic sectors

such as power and steel and companies are looking to acquire ships to control

transport from international mines. Long Coastline : India enjoys a long coastline

of more than 7,500 km long with several deep water ports serving as good

locations for setting up shipyards. Other drivers for shipbuilding industry in

India include the limited surplus capacity available with the global shipbuilding

yards and a booming capital market which could provide easy financing for

capital and operational expenses of these yards. India has proved its capability in

shipbuilding in the area of smaller vessels by getting a sizeable market share.

However, there are specific areas which have to be addressed if India has to

achieve the same in larger vessels.

I. Answer the following questions in two or three sentences : (5 ×××× 2 = 10 )

(i) How has China grown in five years in terms of shipping industry and what

does it hope to achieve in 2015 ?

(ii) What are the concerns that China needs to take care of in ship building ?

(iii) List two reasons for China’s growth.

(iv) How does the Indian labour help this industry ?

PART B — (5 × 16 = 80 marks)

11. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

Sometimes news headlines are scary. Hearing about tornadoes, bird flu, war,

and events such as Hurricane Katrina can make you feel worried. But there

are reasons to relax. Now more than ever, many people—from individuals to

government officials—are working to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Here is a description of who does what.

You may feel sad, helpless, or confused after going through a disaster. It’s

normal to have many different emotions. The first people to respond to

disasters are often police officers, firefighters, or emergency medical

technicians (EMTs). First responders are trained to give basic emergency

medical care. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, an EMT-Basic, also

known as an EMT-1, is trained to take care of people both at the scene of an

accident and while transporting people by ambulance to the hospital. For

example, many schools and other public buildings offer shelter during weather-

related emergencies. And some schools regularly stage and severe-weather

drills. Students at Pine View Middle School in Land O’ Lakes, Fla., for

example, sometimes practice evacuating buildings, just as they would during a

tornado. The school’s principal, David Estabrook, is a shelter manager. He

received special training. “It’s a whole lot of people working together—the Red

Cross, the sheriff’s office, [and] the school,” he says. States also prepare for

emergencies.

In Alaska, more than 40 volcanoes have erupted since the 1700s. So the state’s

Division of meland Security and Emergency Management provides Alaskans

with tips on dealing with volcanic ash. Officials in California try to prevent

large floods, which could occur if levees (walls of earth that help control

flooding) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta region break because an

earthquake or a big storm. A few years ago, California’s former Gov. Arnold

Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in that area because of damage

from big rainstorms. Governments are also preparing for possible health-

related disasters, such as an outbreak of avian influenza, or bird flu. The

disease has infected and killed some people in other parts of the world. North

American agencies are testing migratory birds and creating response plans in

the event that it spreads to this part of the world. A web site operated by the

Department of Health and Human Services offers planning checklists for state

and local governments, schools, businesses, healthcare services, and

individuals. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was created

to help people both before and after disasters. FEMA does everything from

helping make sure that buildings are designed to withstand damage to

training emergency workers. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans many

people criticized FEMA for not responding as well as it could have.

Other federal disaster responders include the National Guard and the U.S.

Coast Guard. The National Guard is a group that can quickly be activated in

the event of a national emergency, such as a hurricane, floods, or a war. The

Coast Guard is the nation’s oldest agency for protecting U.S. waters. It carries

out search-and-rescue missions during and after disasters. Some teens are

trainedto help during an emergency. Students are introduced to the profession

through movies, field trips, guest speakers, and drills. They also try to meet

the physical fitness standards of the New York City Fire Department.

Many organizations outside the government help out too. For instance, the

American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters each year, offering

food, shelter, and other essential aid. The organization also provides almost

half the nation’s blood supply. In addition, the Red Cross offers lifesaving

courses in first ati and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR helps

restore normal breathing in a person who is unable to breathe. The Red Cross

is currently working on creating a better disaster response system. One of the

organization’s goals is to work with more community.

Habitat for Humanity gives volunteer labourers the training and supervision

they need to help disaster victims rebuild their homes. Organizations such as

the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the

Humane Society, and Noah’s Wish train volunteers to rescue animals in times

of disaster. No Need to Worry Of course, you can’t prepare for every kind of

disaster, and there’s no need to try. After all, there’s no reason to fear a

tsunami if you live in Kansas or to lose sleep over earthquakes if you don’t live

near a fault zone. Not every health scare or news story is cause for alarm to

you and the people you love For specific issues that might affect you, though,

it’s good to know that people are ready, just case.

11. Answer both the subdivisions (a) and (b) :

(a) Read the passage and answer the questions given below :

According to a 2007 statement before the Subcommittee on Horticulture

and Organic Agriculture Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives

by May R. Berenbaum, Professor and Head, Department of Entomology

at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, pollination by native

bees was recently estimated to be worth 3 billion dollars annually in the

United States. Other sources estimate pollination to be a 15 billion dollar

industry worldwide.

Moreover, approximately 3/4 of the 250,000 + species of flowering plants

rely on their insect partners – pollinators – for the vital natural process

which transfers pollen grains to receptive female plants to effect

fertilization.

However, up to 80% of honeybees in 35 states have suddenly, inexplicably

vanished, baffling entomologists, beekeepers, farmers, and governments.

About 10% of 2.4 million hives disappeared in the U.S. in late 2006 and

early 2007 in an enigmatic calamity that has been named “colony

collapse disorder,” or CCD. This mysterious killer has wiped out hives in

the U.S. and overseas — in Italy, Poland, Portugal, Central, South

America, and Croatia. Some have theorized that cell phones disrupt the

ability of the insects to navigate — the bees leave the hive, never to

return. Others have surmised that a bee virus corresponding to HIV in

humans has somehow inculcated itself into the honeybee population. Still

others have laid the blame on pesticides, most notably a neurotoxin

called imidacloprid — IMD, which has been shown by French researchers

to cause disorientation among honeybees. IMD also affects the ability of

bees to forage, affecting hive activity. While most French and some

American beekeepers consider IMD to be a major suspect in CCD, their

opinion is not corroborated by American researchers. U.S. scientists

continue to pursue the cause, or amalgam of causes, of the disorder. On

September 7, 2007, American researchers reported in the journal Science

that a newly discovered virus, the Israeli acute paralysis virus, may be a

suspect in the catastrophic loss of honeybees. Meanwhile, U.S.

beekeepers are urgently requesting expeditious resolution to the crisis in

the form of emergency research funding.

The impact of CCD is almost unfathomable. One—third of all food is

provided by the pollination of honeybees. In a world without honeybees,

there would be almost no fruits or vegetables, except for those hand—

pollinated by humans. At their current rate of disappearance, honeybees

will cease to exist by the year 2035.

(a) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow it.

Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration

of Independence was signed in 1776, and it was also the first capital of

the United States, But one fact about Philadelphia is not so well-known:

it is home to nearly 3.000 murals painted on the sides of homes and

buildings around the city. In fact, it is said that Philadelphia has more

murals than any other city in the world, with the exception of Rome. How

did this come to be?

More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane Golden started

a program pairing troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few

buildings around the city. From this small project, something magical

happened. The young people involved helped to create magnificent pieces

of art, but there were other, perhaps more important benefits. The young

people learned to collaborate and get along with many different kinds of

people during the various steps required to paint and design a mural.

They learned to be responsible, because they needed to follow a schedule

to make sure the murals were completed. They also learned to take pride

in their community. It is hard for any resident to see the spectacular

designs and not feel proud to be a part of Philadelphia.

Take a walk around some of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia,

neighborhoods full of broken windows and littered front steps, and you

will find beautiful works of art on the sides and fronts of buildings. Of

course the murals are not just in poor neighborhoods, but more affluent

ones as well. Special buses take tourists to different parts of the city to

see the various murals, which range from huge portraits of historical

heroes, to cityscapes to scenes depicting the diverse ethnic groups that

call Philadelphia home.

As a result of its success, the mural program created by Jane Golden has

now become the nation’s largest public art program and a model for other

cities throughout the country seeking to help troubled youth.

(iii) As used in paragraph 1, the phrase ‘with the exception of Rome”

means that

(4) Rome and Philadelphia are the only cities with murals
