God’s creatures. The

pastel heavens and the majestic soft mountains give a

natural warmth and serenity to the background. Birds

appear to be chatting in a tree while a tiger plays with

a hare at his feet. A lion and lioness vigilantly stroll

their kingdom, inspiring security rather than fear.

There is space to run, shade for rest, a path under a

leafy arch that invites us to walk. Eden is the perfect

habitat of protection, freedom, and fraternity.

And in the center are Adam and Eve. Traditional farm

animals are nearby, and man’s best friend is at Adam’s

right hand with a cat sitting at his feet. Like our first

parents, we are not alone in our search for God. We

are surrounded by many of the wonderful creatures he

has placed alongside us to reflect his glory and show

us his love.

When God comes looking for people in the Garden,

he expects to find them enjoying the beauty and

harmony of his creation. Yet original sin, that abuse of

freedom by doubting God’s goodness, destroyed

humanity’s innocence and his unity with creation.

What was cherished now becomes a source of fear and

suspicion. We destroy and pollute what God gave us to

use and to preserve. Trusting in God’s goodness, as

proved by the wonderful beauty in creation, is the key

to inner peace and unity with others and creation.

Doubting his love is to doubt our very source and

First Reading Ezeckiel 17:22-24 (92B) “The Lord will raise Israel like a tree on a high mountain. It shall put forth branches, bear fruit and become a majestic cedar.” Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Even though we are in the flesh, our intent is to please the Lord. For when our earthly walk of faith is done, everything shall be revealed before Christ. Gospel Mark 4:26-34 The reign of God is like a mustard seed. It is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into the biggest shrub of all. By means of parables Jesus taught the people.

GOD’S KINGDOM IS LIKE A MUSTARD SEED While teaching the crowds about the Kingdom of God, Jesus uses parables so that they might understand its meaning. He offers his disciples private explanations of their meaning. The Gospel reading begins

with Jesus describing how a sower scatters seed on the land and then one day discovers the land bearing fruit so the sower knows it is harvest time. Such is it with God’s Kingdom, which is like a mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, which grows into a large plant. Birds will come to make their home in the large plant because of its shade. With the Kingdom of God, as with nature, we need to understand that God is at work in our midst—in us, the people around us, in the Church, and in all of creation.

Summer is fast upon us. School is winding down and families are eagerly planning their summer vacations. It is a time of anticipation, a time of excitement but also a time of recommitment. Summer vacations are important and prized but they should not become a vacation from our faith. I remember back when I was growing up and my parents made arrangements for our family vacation. They were much simpler affairs back then; a week at a working farm in Pennsylvania or a weekend trip to the Jersey shore. But regardless of the location of our vacation, I always remember the first thing my father did after we arrived and unpacked was to find the nearest Catholic Church and its Sunday Mass schedule. He would always say that vacation was a break from work or school not a break from God. Our God is with us every day of our lives, protecting and guiding us, helping us remain faithful to his law of love. Today it is much easier for vacationing families to find the closest church and its Mass schedule since all you have to do is go on the internet. Enjoy your summer vacations but don’t forget your loving and caring God. Saint Paul lived a full life, a life of fervor and commitment to his Lord and Savior. His was a life of non-stop action, traveling from one place to another, evangelizing the growing Christian communities and instilling in them the nature of Christ’s great love for every human being, regardless of station in life. He knew, because of his life-changing encounter with Jesus, that we can never be separated from Christ’s love, regardless of our human failings. He also recognized we were not so much created for this world but for the heaven yet to come, when we are reunited with our God, the creator of all things. Our earthly lives are transitory and the heaven yet to come eternal. Paul experienced firsthand the evils of our world but was able to overcome them only because he placed Jesus Christ at the center of his life. Serving Jesus was the purpose of his existence, his morning star, the focus of his hopes and dreams. He was fearless in proclaiming the gospel message of love, compassion and forgiveness because he knew he was forever loved by God and that Jesus was his inseparable companion as he traveled to far-distant lands making known the person of Jesus Christ. We too should attempt to live our lives with courage and commitment to our faith. As St. Paul boldly proclaimed, “nothing can separate us from the love of God.” What comfort this reality should provide us! God’s love is eternal and unconditional. Regardless of how many times we wander away from him seeking the pleasures and allurements of this world, God is always there. He waits for us to see the light and return to him. God bless and have a graced summer!

A lesson learned…

TTHHEE WWOOOODDEENN BBOOWWLL I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now. A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about father," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor." So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl! When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometime he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

A blessing for Father’s Day The Book of Blessings notes that in the United States the observance of Father’s Day has an important place in American Life. Because of this, the Church provides a model for its celebration within the context of our faith. As a civil celebration, Father’s Day allows us to recognize and celebrate the roles of these men in our lives and in our families. The Church takes this one step further and not only observes their place in our lives, but blesses them for the image they can be of God, our heavenly Father. Fathers have given us life and love. In return, we remember all fathers living and dead, and we bless them in our prayer for the many ways they have mirrored God’s love to us.

May God Bless you and guide you

in your very special role as a father. May it always be a joy and a privilege.

May you treasure your children from their birth through adulthood,

as unique and precious gifts from God. May God reward your fatherly love

with good health, peace of mind, contentment in your work

and joy in your times of leisure.

Father’s Day has long been held as a day of recognition for those men who effectively and faithfully love, support and nurture their families in the image of our Heavenly Father. It is only good and natural to want to honor those men who are fine examples of true fatherhood. We also want to honor other men in our lives those who have played a fatherly role in the life of a child. This would include brothers, uncles, cousins, teachers, coaches, religious education teachers, youth volunteers, neighbors and scout leaders, to name but a very few.

The Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus will host the Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony with the veterans from the Calo-Sass VFW Post #4697

and Stover American Legion Post #37, members from Boy Scout Troop #120 and Cub Scout Pack #120, the Knights' Msgr. Peter B. O'Connor Assembly Color Corp, and the north Arlington Volunteer Fire Dept. on Thursday night, June 14 (Flag Day), at 6:30pm, at the Columbian Club Hall located at 194 River Road, North Arlington. All are invited to participate in this patriotic event as worn and tattered American Flags are retired with dignity and respect. If anyone has a flag from another country, they may be retired, too. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
