President's Note
Spring is an exciting time of year celebrating nursing during our annual Induction Ceremony and Nurses Week. In May, we inducted 34 new members into our chapter who will undoubtedly make their mark in nursing. The Induction Ceremony was an amazing event with several students from across nursing programs attending. It is a joyous occasion celebrating achievements of students and community members. Dr. Danielle Howa Pendergrass, our Keynote Speaker left an indelible impression on what it means to grow, learn and lead throughout your profession. Welcoming new members is the highlight of my presidency, and a reminder of what it means to belong to such a wonderful organization. We hope that both current and new members find benefit in belonging to Sigma Theta Tau International and Gamma Rho Chapter, as you grow and make a difference in nursing. As members, we invite you to become involved in Gamma Rho activities, whether serving as a board or committee member, participating on activities and philanthropic events. Gamma Rho is committed to being a resource for you throughout your nursing career, connecting you with peers and opportunities for mentorship as you make a positive difference in the future of healthcare. During Nurses Week, many Gamma Rho members were able to attend Honors for Nursing, sponsored by the University of Utah College of Nursing Alumni Board. Both of these celebrations are incredible reminders of what it means to be a nurse and belong to a group of committed, passionate group of people. It is reminiscent of the enduring values of Sigma Theta Tau: love, courage and honor. Sue Chase-Cantarini, DNP RN President, STTI Gamma Rho Chapter [email protected] (801) 585-9642

Congratulations to Gamma Rho member Jia-Wen Guo, PhD, RN!
Dr. Guo recently received the Primary Children’s Medical Foundation Early
Career Development Research award of $50,000 for her study Automatic Self-
Monitoring for Adolescent Depression (ASAP). The study aims to create a tool
to help adolescents monitor their depression symptoms by utilizing the
individual’s social media posts.
Congratulations are also in order for University of Utah College of Nursing Assistant Professor Adjunct Ann
Hutton, Ph.D., APRN. Dr. Hutton was recently named the winner of the 2016 Honors for Nursing Dare to Care
Award; an award which recognizes Utah nurses who represent the values of nursing in service to the community.
Hutton has decades of nursing experience and a long list of awards and recognitions for her work as a nurse
specializing in mental health. Over the years, she has been a driving force in promoting awareness and treatment
of mental health issues. As a long-time volunteer for Caring Connections she has helped provide suicide survivor
grief support. She is also on the board of the Utah
Chapter of The American Foundation for Suicide
Prevention. In addition, she has been involved in the
American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Utah State
Mental Health Planning Committee, and the Utah
Council of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses. She was
also part of the original Gamma Rho Chapter at the
University of Utah. This is all in addition to her work at
the University where Dr. Hutton continues to teach
graduate classes in mental health/psychiatry and has a
faculty therapy practice.
Dr. Hutton says she accepted the Dare to Care award
on behalf “all who suffer from, or have relatives and friends who suffer some form of mental disorders.” She says
mental disorders are a national crisis that need to be addressed for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is
the human toll. Individuals with untreated mental disorders can often end up in prison, living on the streets, or
even suicide. It is a great cost to not just the community but the nation as a whole.
According to Dr. Hutton, it is of the utmost importance to make it easier for individuals suffering from mental
disorders to get treatment and she looks to future nurses for help in her cause. She encourages nurses to pursue
careers in mental health and to help treat those individuals who suffer from the devastating impacts of mental
diseases.
