The Concept

•A Multi-faceted concept.• It means having a work-environment where an employee’s activities become more important by implementing procedures or policies that make the work less routine and more rewarding for the employee.

•These procedures or policies include autonomy, recognition, belongingness, development and external rewards

•There exists a relationship between Q.W.L and productivity

Page 3: Quality of work life.

For The People

•The people involved get a sense of satisfaction in their work. Work then becomes not a burden but a means by which the abilities of a person can find expression

•Mass-production technology has made worker’s job monotonous and it is of little meaning to him

Page 4: Quality of work life.

The Effect

Results of low Q.W.L are

• Absenteeism • Low Performance • Poor Morale • Occasional

Sabotage Ultimately it is the organization that suffers.

The Initiative:Quality of Work Life

• Q.W.L is any conscious effort for improving working conditions, work content, and its safety, security, wages and benefits, etc.

• Q.W.L can be said to be all the original inputs which aim at improving the employees’ satisfaction and enhancing organizational effectiveness

• Q.W.L is a concern not only to improve life at work, but also life outside work

Technology & Work

Page 8: Quality of work life.

The Reason is Revolution?

•After Industrial Revolution, the importance of human factor reduced because of the vast mechanization.

•Various problems like job dissatisfaction, boredom, absenteeism, lack of commitment etc. came up.

•Most management theories gave emphasis on production, manipulating the skills of the employees

A Survey I must add!!!• Almost three-quarters of the working population think that technology has had a

negative impact on their work-life balance. That is according to a survey from Fastnet Recruitment.

• In fact, 81% of employers and 68% of employees surveyed admitted to finding it difficult to achieve a work-life balance as a result of communications technology.

• It found that 60% of employees access their work e-mail account on their personal device and almost two-thirds (62%) respond to work e-mails outside of office hours.

• While 61% of employers surveyed expect employees to check e-mails outside of office hours.

Some More…

• The survey shows that the increasing use of smartphones means that people are constantly connected, whether in or out of the office and indeed outside office hours.

• This 24/7 accessibility means that many of them feel obliged to respond to emails and calls outside of work hours.

• An overwhelming majority of employees (81%) surveyed think that remote email access has contributed to longer working hours.

Some Examples

• In France, trade unions have recently imposed restrictions of French employers requiring "disconnection of communication tools" for contract workers in the hi-tech and consulting sectors.

•However, Irish workers and employers were not in favour of such measures, with over half of employers and almost 75% of employees stating their objection to any similar restrictions in Ireland.

Pros & Cons

The Affection

• The rapid spread of computer and telecommunication technologies throughout white-collar work has forced social scientists to consider the impact of these technologies on the people who use them directly and on the work force and economy as a whole.

• Now researchers are also asking about the effects of information technology on the social experience of individuals who use it, i.e., the nature of their jobs and the quality of their working lives.

Page 15: Quality of work life.

May be… May not be…• Both economic and social theory as well as a rich case study literature

suggest that while information technology may increase productivity, it can degrade the work lives of those who use it.

• One way for-employers to cut labor costs is to substitute less experienced, educated, and skilled employees for more skilled employees by using technology.

• Technology, broadly conceived, can have large effects on workers, but the size of these effects and even their direction can depend on the workers’ job categories, the detailed tasks they perform, and the local culture in which they use the technology.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be

truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only

way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet,

keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you will know

when you find it.
