PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Steve Shultz
Tooling down the road the oth-
er day, I saw an MG. Back in
the 80s when I was in high
school and generally aware of
cars, such an occurrence would
not rank as anything particular-
ly notable. MGs were, at the
time, fairly common. I believe
we had three or four Bs in the
Cary High parking lot, a man-
ageable number to eyeball when a part would disappear
(which happened on at least one occasion to a marker
light cover) since it would usually reappear on one of the
other cars in short order.
Seeing an MG on the road in 2015 may not be as common
as it once was, but our little British cars seem to be more
common than vehicles from another of the great British
marques affectionately known within MG circles as “The
Dark Side” (a.k.a Triumph). It seemed to me that I see
MGs about twice as often as TRs, with the possible excep-
tion of one attractive purple TR-6 that seems to follow
me. Or maybe I’m just paranoid.
So I got to thinking (not always, or even often, a good
thing) and decided to try and add up how many of each
type of British sports car rolled out of the Triumph and
MG factories from the period of roughly 1950 to 1980. I
added up the models I could think of, focusing mainly on
the two-seat sports cars. I may have unintentionally left a
few out, for which I apologize in advance. I suspect I’m
not breaking new ground here and that there is already
some reference out there, but I actually looked up each
model and then added up the production figures. Note
that values for some models may not match your: a)
memory, b) book, c) friend’s recollection, or d) reality.
There seems to be some fudge factor in the actual num-
bers of cars produced, and some sources include pre-
production models, etcetera. Plus one can’t believe every-
thing one reads on the Interweb. Yes, I know that comes
as a shock.
But without further delay, here are the results of my re-
search:
QUADRIGA NEWS Monthly Newsletter of the North Carolina MG Car Club
September 2015
I was shocked (well, that may be a bit strong of a word…
I was mildly surprised) to see that the number of Tri-
umphs is reasonably similar to the number of MGs, so the
perception of seeing twice as many MGs began to make
less sense. I was also surprised (yes, mildly) that the
number of wedge-shaped Triumphs (the 7s and 8s) ex-
ceeded the number of TR-6s, considering that most of the
Triumphs I see tooling around are of the 6 variety and the
6s are older than the 7/8s. If I recall, no wedges were pre-
sent at the car show this spring, and I have to wonder if
someone is quietly buying up all the un-rusted cars ….

NATTER CHATTER Terry Jones
Hello out there in
NCMGCC land! Well, as
we see the days getting
shorter and (maybe) cool-
er...we were treated to a
great Natter at the home of
Sports and Compacts, by
our hosts Carl Cason and Jeff Basham with the excel-
lent support of Jeff's wife Susan Garrity, and the staff
of Sports and Compacts as well.
We were made to feel right at home, and it was a most
entertaining evening, with cars for everyone's tastes,
from the way cool Mazda Miata raced by Carl's son,
Carl (and I think maybe Carl and Jeff have had a few
laps in it too...) to the SCCA Sprite that Carl has cam-
paigned quite successfully for many years, to a very
original early second generation Sprite that a customer
brought in for freshening, to our own mix of club
members' prized LBCs. Now, we can't wait to see what
Jeff has in store with the (Monster Mazda) Magnette...get
busy Jeff, we look forward to its outing...maybe at
a monthly breakfast in 2016??
Thanks again for a memorable evening!
Now on to the fall...the September Noggin 'n' Natter will
be at the home of Rick and Brenda Scott, 3102 Camelot
Ct., Durham, on the morning of Saturday, September
12th, from 11am -2pm. I am sure we will be feted in a
most excellent way, and get to see Rick's TR-6, as well
as his prized English Bike, a Norton Commander, one of
Britain's finest and most storied two wheelers...so get
your calendar marked, and get your marque ready for the
fall. Let's get out to Durham and show Rick and Brenda
our appreciation for their most generous gesture. We
thank you.
Cheers!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS
It is time to start thinking about officers for 2016. A nominating committee of Steve Shultz
and Randy Laxton are looking for a few good men and women to serve the club in 2016. If
you are interested in any of the officer’s positions please contact Steve at 919-608-2069 or
[email protected] or Randy at 919-271-1087 or [email protected] What a
great way to serve your club! All positions, except treasurer, are open. I Want YOU to
serve on the board.
(President’s Message Continued)
(there must be at least a hundred) and secretly cornering
the market. Or maybe that’s the paranoia again.
In any case, there were about a million and a half chanc-
es to buy a really fun car between 1950 and 1980, and
I’m glad to still occasionally see one on the road today.
So the next time you are on the byway and spot an MG,
Triumph, or any of the other beloved LBCs, be sure to
give a friendly wave and take pleasure in seeing a clas-
sic doing what it is designed to do, be driven!

FALL LAKE TOUR
When – September, 19, 2015
Where – Lake Gaston, home of Myron &
Nancy Grueneich
IT’S TIME!
It is time for the best day trip of the
year, hands down. Everything the
club loves, a great drive in our
LBCs on back roads, great chance to
socialize with club members, really
good food, and a free gift to remember the 20th Lake
Tour. Isn’t that what our club is all about!
If you are not hungry when you get there, you will be
once you smell the pig cooking on the grill. There will
be BBQ pork, slow cooked all day, potato salad, cold
slaw, baked beans, and get this, homemade ice cream!
All of this put together by the Swine Master (aka Don),
Flaming Smoke Mistress (aka Linda, in charge of the
fire pit), Sty Master & Sty Mistress (aka Myron & Nan-
cy, in charge of the pig sty), two Sooie Chefs (aka Jim &
Lin).
Please bring a chair and the beverage of your choice, and
be prepared to experience the laid back mood of being
on “Lake Time”. It will also be a chance to meet some
of our Va. members. So mark your calendar now, and
make plans to have one of the best times ever.
Dennis & Pat Taylor will lead the group to Lake Gaston.
Meet at the McDonald’s in Rolesville at 9:00, with a
drivers meeting at 9:25, and departure at 9:30. The
McDonalds is about a 15 minute drive from the US 1/US
401 split in North Raleigh. When you get to Rolesville,
the speed limit is 35, don’t speed, or your day may start
out all wrong. The drive to Lake Gaston will take about
an hour and a half, through some great back roads with a
comfort stop half way.
You will have time to chat and sit around the fire pit be-
fore we eat at around 1:00 pm. Of course the ribs, which
everyone jockeys for position around the grill, will be
ready a little before that, and they go fast! The leaves
should be beautiful on your drive up, so if weather per-
mits, put the top down.
If you are not coming with the group, or from a different
direction, here is Myron & Nancy’s address and phone
number, so you can put it in your GPS.

FALL MOUNTAIN TOUR
October 16th-18th Jim Lathan
The Grand Canyon of the
East. That’s the accolade
given to Linville Gorge.
Unfortunately, the only
way to see the spectacular
Wiseman Point view is
across a five-mile gravel
road.
The next best opportunity
is Linville Falls, at the
head of the gorge. This is
easily North Carolina’s
best waterfall and we’ll
hike up to the observation
point on Saturday morn-
ing.
Our Mountain Tour dates are October 16th through 18th.
To go along, you’ll need to call the Comfort Inn in Mor-
ganton and apply your credit card to reserve a room for
the 16th and 17th. Rooms are $89.99 per night, plus tax-
es, for a single-king or double-queen. Our availability
and price guarantees expire on September 16th, so don’t
delay making the call if you’re planning to go.
How about trip insurance? The best way to make sure
the Mountain Tour won’t be a flop for you is to get your
MG on the road beforehand. Local 50-mile rounds in
the coming weeks can be great fun and are excellent for
spotting any potential problems. My recommendation is
to also make the Lake Tour on September 19th. It’s an
easy one-day drive and good insurance against unex-
pected MT road gremlins.

GOOD EATS
Pecan Penuche
Sharon Mango
from her Aunt Emma
Ingredients:
4 c brown sugar 1 1/2 c milk
1/8 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla
5 TBSP butter in small pieces 1 c chopped pecans
Directions: 1. Combine the sugar milk and salt in heavy 3 quart
saucepan, stirring to mix well. Place over medium
heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly till sugar
dissolves.
2. Continue to boil until mixture reaches the firm-ball
stage. (244°) Like fudge, drop a small amount into
cold water till ball forms.
3. Remove from heat and place pan in cold water in
the sink. Add butter and let it melt and cool.
4. Add nuts and vanilla; stir till it loses some of its
sheen.
5. Pour into buttered 6 x 10 glass pan (I don't think it
really needs to be glass. I sometimes use a pie
plate) and Penuche will be about 1 inch thick. In a
larger pan, the Penuche will be thinner.
6. Place in refrigerator until cool and hard.
FALL VINEYARD TOUR &
POKER RALLY
October 3, 2015 or rain date October 10
When: 10:00 AM, October
3, 2015 or rain date Octo-
ber 10 (please let us know
by October 1 if you are
participating by replying to
What: Nice slow drive and a Poker Run Rally followed
by noshing and nattering and five card poker.
Trip Duration: Starting in Cary at 10:00 am going
through Cary and around Raleigh, then through and out
Highway 98 about 65 miles and this takes over one hour
normally. With our LBC’s we would take a leisurely
pace, with at least one stop and would take more than
two and close to three hours. So, we arrive at the vine-
yard about 1:00 ish.
Where: Join at any of three locations:
Tour starts at Panera Bread, (beside the club’s
old Golden Corral off Dillard Drive) Cary and
goes to McDonalds on Leesville Rd. near I-
540.
Poker Run Rally starts at McDonalds on
Leesville Rd. and I-540 and goes to Bunn via
back roads in Wake and Franklin Counties
with at least one stop.
Come Directly to the Vineyard:
Whispering Oaks Vineyard
1624 Sledge Rd.
Louisburg, NC 27549
Tour Information: This tour offers a pleasant little MG
car trip local to Raleigh that incorporates a fun Rally
(not a time/distance rally). All members are invited
with or without LBCs. Style of Rally allows maximum
participation and minimal logistic support as there will
be no time keepers or manned rally stations.
We will have some local wines from Duplin or Hinnant
wineries that are made from these types of grapes for
tasting which can make great spritzers. Some local
beers and English beer will be provided to reward the
folks that venture out. We will also have snacks so no
one will starve.
Important: Our hosts get three things for sharing their
time and farm. They get to promote the fact that LBCs
will be lined up and folks that are there to pick grapes
can see them (we do after all draw a crowd). Second
they sell some grapes and get some repeat NCMGCC
customers. Lastly they get to talk to us, show us around
and enjoy some unique company as we enjoy theirs.
Poker Rally Rules:
We will travel more
or less as a group so
no navigational skills
are required unless
you get lost. The
navigator will instead
be looking for road-
side details and trying
to complete a “Points of Interest” form that includes
local sights, signs, road names and trick questions. The
more POI’s you get correct the more playing cards are
dealt to you at each stop and at the end point. At the
end of the Rally, you make the best 5-card hand possi-
ble and we will select a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There
will be a hard “cluck” prize for anyone that has hard
luck travel story. (There I was tooling along at 37
MPH when this awful buzzing noise started under the
bonnet…). Each participating car will get to submit a
five card hand. A tie is possible and if that happens we
will draw for a high card for the winner.
Watch your email for more information.

B-STINGERS UPDATE Jim Lathan
So what do a vintage 1972 MGB Race Car and a main-
frame computer room have in common? Several things,
actually.
For one, both are technologically outdated, but that
doesn’t mean that both aren’t still fast. Second, both
incorporate the use of firewalls, although the firewalls
serve different purposes. And finally, both have (had)
halon fire suppression systems.
The firewall in a car, of course, serves to separate the
driver from the engine compartment and provide a tem-
porary barrier for driver escape if an engine fire occurs.
The computer firewall is figurative only, but protects
against an external “fire” of unauthorized access. Either
way, the firewall can be a life-saving shield, if only fig-
uratively.
That brings us to a current B-Stinger safety upgrade.
Heretofore, our fuel pressure gauge had been a direct-
read device. That is, there was a connection from the
fuel line through the firewall to the back of the gauge.
Our safety improvement was to install a pressure sensor/
transmitter in the engine compartment, transmitting inert
fluid through the firewall to the gauge. Thus the possi-
bility, however small, of raw fuel escaping into the driv-
er compartment was eliminated.
The second safety upgrade dealt with our original halon
fire suppression system. The 1970’s technology for race
cars and computer rooms was to use halon (an inert gas)
as the fire extinguishing medium. Unfortunately, halon
is similar to freon in its environmentally degrading ef-
fects and is no longer manufactured. The newer technol-
ogy is called AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam). Our
choice was the Firecharger Suppressant System, market-
ed by a fellow vintage racer. We have nozzles in the
engine bay, in the driver compartment and at the fuel cell
in the rear. Another advantage of this system over halon
is that it can be recharged at the track, if necessary.
Safety Fast is the MG mot-
to. If you want to see what
it actually looks like, come
let us show you at the VIR
Gold Cup Races on Sun-
day, September 27th!
