Q-Tales Curation Approach

• The aim of Q-Tales is to increase children’s engagement with the written

word.

• At the heart of this is a democratic approach to curation that is needs-

focussed and develops specific literary skills.

• Our democratic approach is to create a platform, whereby the evaluation

of different aspects of the products is intrinsic to interaction processes

that are employed by creators, expert curators and users (reviewers).

Objectives

• Provide a way of rating the pedagogical quality of a product to ensure that it is appropriate for a given reader and that it helps to improve the literacy of that reader.

• Develop tools that will not only evaluate a product, but will also provide data metrics that users can access, understand and contribute – creating a virtuous circle.

• Evolve a curation network to facilitate the above, to support the launch of Q-Tales and inform its ongoing development.

Using SEND Code of Practice

To ensure a truly needs-focussed approach, we use the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice: 0–25 years 2015. These focus on four essential elements:

• Cognition and learning• Communication and interaction• Social, emotional and mental health• Sensory and/or physical needs

Each is evaluated in line with the support that they offer in these four categories. These four categories will be combined with the three developmental categories that they are as follows:

• Emergent reading (0–4 years)• Initial reading (5–8 years)• Reading to learn (9–16 years)

How will curators actually rate the products?

Two Curators will look at each product and examine how it fulfils the four SEND categories. They will rate aspects of the product and how it relates to each SEND category by using a Likert scale approach. The results of the curation process along with reviewers’ comments appear to the e-book initiator and she/he decides if corrections will be applied and a second round of curation will take place or the book is going to be publishes as is. The score and the comments of the reviewers with their names appear next to each e-book on the Q-Tales store.
