FROM THE EAST!

....AND IN ALL THINGS CHARITYOur Rules & Regulations in Connecticut contain a phrase, most often used when referring to the differences in ritual allowed within our State, which says: In essentials, Unity; in non-essentials, Freedom. Our current Grand Senior Warden, Brother Simon LaPlace, rst pointed out to me that this phrase comes from an ancient source (perhaps as far back as Saint Augustine) and that the phrase--as we now use it--is incomplete. The complete phrase, Brother Simon told me, is: In essentials, Unity; in non-essentials, Freedom; and in all things Charity. Although commonly attributed to Saint Augustine (who was born in 354 AD), it is now suggested by some scholars that the real author of this phrase was a German theologian writing in the 1600's, named Peter Meiderlin. The phrase appears in a publication in which he used a Latin anagram of his name which became: Rupertus Meledinus. The phrase has since been used by scholars, speakers and theologians as diverse as Pope John XXIII, John Wesley, George H.W. Bush, and Abraham Lincoln. The reason I am so intrigued by this lost word in our Rules & Regulations, is that charity, it seems to me, is a core concept of our Craft. Weve all heard of the considerable donations given by Freemasons to various worthy causes---amounting to more than two million dollars a day. But charity, for us as Brothers, is much more than the mere giving of alms. The word is used in its old sense, when people were taught to act charitably towards one another ....to give each other the benet of the doubt ....to assume the best in someone until their actions no longer merit that assumption. It is how we are supposed to treat each other as Brothers. The word appears prominently in the 18th Degree in the Scottish Rite. There, the passage from Corinthians is quoted describing the three virtues: Faith, Hope & Charity. Mackey tells us that the word Charity in that Bible passage is a translation of the Greek word agape, which he describes as fraternal love. The word agape is also used to describe the Festive Board in the Traditional, European, or Colonial Concept lodges. This is especially appropriate, I believe, insofar as in our Festive Boards we receive the direct experience of that fellowship which is an essential part of being a Mason.

Quinta Essentia Lodge will be seeking a Charter at the next Annual Grand Session, in March. We are a Colonial Concept Lodge, now laboring under dispensation of the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Brother James T. McWain. We will be hosting a hospitality room at the Grand Session, on Sunday night, after the banquet. We welcome all who are interested in learning more about our work, here, to come visit. Traveling the Path to the EastThe path to the Masters chair can be a confusing journey. Last years Masonic forums told us that ofcers said that as they progressed, they didnt feel really prepared for the obligations that come with the various ofcer positions. This was especially true of the elected positions, Junior Warden, Senior Warden, and Worshipful Master. The Masters Path courses are a response to those comments. The courses start with the Senior Deacon to prepare him for the responsibilities of the Junior Warden. They progress through the Junior Warden and Senior Warden to add to their knowledge and abilities of the important positions they will hold when elected to higher ofce. instructions on what the material in the Rules and Regulations, Policy and Procedures and ritual pertains to the course. It will also contain three quizzes for each subject. In the educational portion the ofcer is to study the required material and complete the quizzes. When the quizzes are completed they are to be returned to the Dean of the Masters Path. The Dean will grade them. A score of 80% is required to pass the quizzes. If a passing grade is not achieved the quiz will be returned so that it can be retaken. When a passing grade for all quizzes is accomplished the Dean will send the nal exam. Upon completion of the nal exam, it will be returned to the Dean for scoring. A score of 80% must be achieved to pass the nal exam. If the nal exam is not passed it will be returned so the ofcer can retake it. When the ofcer has achieved a satisfactory grade the Dean will record the accomplishment of the ofcer. For the ritual qualication section the ofcer will have to make arrangements with his District Deputy to meet the ritual qualications. When the District Deputy is satised that the ofcer meets the qualications he will notify the Dean that the ofcer has been qualied. There is one exception for ritual qualication. If the lodge is participating in the Honor Lodge program, prociency in opening, closing, going to refreshment, returning to labor, and receiving dignitaries is a requirement for the three elected ofcers. Therefore, the JW and SW would meet the requirements for their sections of the Masters Path. When both the educational and ritual sections of the Masters Path have been completed, the Dean will notify the Grand Lodge ofce. The Grand Lodge ofce will issue a certicate of completion and a pin indicating that the ofcer is now qualied to assume the next elected position in his lodge.

Gary W. Arseneau, Deputy Grand Master

The Masters Path is designed to replace the current qualications and put educational requirements into a course that the Senior Deacon, Junior Warden, and Senior Warden will need to complete before being installed in their next ofce. The courses remove the need to remember what each Grand Master might have declared as a qualication. All the courses will consist of two parts: educational and ritual. The education sections will begin to aquaint each ofcer with the Rules and Regulations, Policy and Procedures, as well as the degree work necessary to be able to open and close a Masonic lodge. The respective courses will be delivered to Senior Deacons, Junior Wardens, and Senior Wardens via email by the Dean of the Masters Path. This part of the course will contain

A Return To Freemasonry LostBY: BROTHER MATTHEW MCCAFFERTY MORRISEditors Note: Brother Matthew is the author of The North Eastern Corner, a Masonic Blog. It was the privilege of Quinta Essentia Lodge U.D. to have Brother Matthew attend our rst meeting and write about his experience in his blog. Acedemia, Esoterika, Virtruvian, Nine Muses, it sounds like an incantation Harry Potter might use, but it is just part of a list of lodges that practice Traditional Observance or European Concept that I have fawned over for longer than I care to admit. They are spread across the country and all have long lines of men at their door awaiting membership. Unfortunately I had not been able to visit any except St. Johns Lodge No. 1 in New York, which had previously been the greatest Masonic experience in my journey to date.... and then came Quinta Essentia. For over 4 years I have dreamed about a new lodge, well not exactly new, but a lodge that was more of the kind of lodge that you see in the old paintings and pictures and read about in books. I envisioned a lodge where gentlemen of all ages and status levels congregated to dig deeper into what it is we do and try to do things better. I hungered for the lodge meeting where from the moment I arrived there was nothing but challenge and conversation that led me to something I had not thought of, or made a connection to before. After meetings, no matter where I went in the Connecticut Masonic jurisdiction, I sought out like minded individuals in search of more light and s o m eh ow we a lw ay s en d ed u p commiserating together. Why was it that we all could not nd the Freemasonry that we were promised? Why was it that tedious business meetings and parroted ritual were more common than meaningful gatherings of men striving for something more? Where were the lodges Mozart, Franklin, and Dermott gained inspiration from? The more I searched the more I found out that American Freemasonry had become more akin to the American Legion than the Royal Society (and I mean no offence to that honorable institution dedicated to veterans and servicemen). Instead of ascrumptiousmeal with ne beverages and deep conversation, a cold cut sandwich and potato chips with a beer or soda were the victuals gathered around to hear dirty jokes or old stories, and you wonder why no one was joining or sticking around if they joined! This enlightenment vacuum was the genesis of the modern Masonic restoration movement. It was led by Brothers who came and wondered what had become of the Order that they thought they were joining. Instead of high tailing it out of Freemasonry like so many before, these men have dedicated a lot of time, effort and dreams to bringing back Freemasonry in America. Laudable Pursuit is their declaration of independence and their goal is nothing shorter than a universal return of the golden age of Masonry. Brothers started to meet regularly and fully explore the imprecations and implementation of this goal. Quinta Essentia Lodge UD is the product of such a group of Masons in Connecticut. I had the distinct pleasure of being present at the inaugural meeting of the Quinta Essentia last Saturday night and I can say with all due respect to existing lodges that it is a clear shot across the bow to all slumping, muddling and in my opinion dimmed lodges. It started with a very short meeting which was executed extraordinarily well considering the pomp and circumstance surrounding a new lodge at its rst meeting attended by a lot of purple including the sitting Grand Master and his immediate predecessor. The meeting was followed by a awlessly executed cocktail hour with numerous toasts used to raise the level of conversation between the assembled Brethren and then a ne dinner/ festive board where the topic of the evening was Fiat lux the meaning of Masonic Light. The key note speaker was Charles Tirrell my fellow Masonic Blogger from Masonic Renaissance and dedicated Freemason and I can say without reserve that he outstandingly started an unparalleled conversation about Masonic Light that began in physics and led to many destinations I had no forethought of

QUINTA ESSENTIA LODGE U.D.reaching. The night truly raised the vibration of all who attended (I think), at the least I certainly left thinking in ways that I had not when I made the drive up to New Haven. The bad thing about the evening was that it is the exception to the rule in Freemasonry in Connecticut. There were many discussions around the room that night about how the evenings proceedings were unobtainable in most blue lodges and that it was such a pleasure to be a part of this new undertaking and the avor of Masonry it represented. There was a constant drumming of how not everyone in Freemasonry in CT was seeking this type of light and this was the cause clbre for creating this new lodge. My argument is that if a Freemasons lodge meeting has no result of raising the level of the men who attend and simply runs through the motions of Freemasonry to get to the cold cuts and beer why do they meet? Does just saying that we make good men better as a mantra do just that, or is it a vapid hum with no resonance? If a lodge has to be formed to meet and act as Freemasons in the classical sense of the order, what do the other lodges meet as? These are things that the craft has been pondering since this type of lodge was created. The thought I would like to leave for grand lodges and lodges that constantly get new men and loose them as quickly as they come is that these traditional lodges are extremely successful and are not experiencing the downtur n and desolation that mainstream lodges suffer and are being formed all around the country. This is something that we all should take notice and govern ourselves accordingly. Restore The Foundation!

East Denver Lodge has been following a Traditional Observance style approach to Masonry with their own regional inuences to include a wonderful Agape ceremony. The brethren of Quinta Essentia Lodge wishes them the best of luck with their endeavors.
