New air alliance VIRGIN Blue, Emirates, Etihad,Korean Air and Irish low-costcarrier Ryanair are among a groupof airlines which have formed anunlikely coalition over a globaldispute about how aircraftpurchases are financed. They’re squaring off against 24other carriers including AA, Delta,British Airways and Lufthansa overthe so-called ‘home country rule’which prevents countries whereBoeing and Airbus aircraft arebuilt from providing governmentbacking to their own airlines tohelp them purchase aircraft. BA ceo Willie Walsh claims therule amounts to Europe “fundingthe expansion of Emirates,” withthe US and European airlineswanting it scrapped and thecapping of export credit levels at20% of aircraft deliveries. NEW Zealand’s Hamilton Int’lAirport has requested that theAustralian Competition ConsumerCommission “consider competitivecontraints” in its determinationfor the proposed Virgin Blue/AirNew Zealand alliance. HIA’s commerical and growthmanager, Andrew Toop, told theACCC last week that as a regionalairport it is likely to see capacityreduced or “rationalised”. Currently, Air New Zealand andPacific Blue operate servicesbetween Hamilton and Brisbane, via Auckland. HIA argues that the planned DJ/NZ joint venture could see a cutback on capacity to Hamilton, infavour of NZ’s three bigger ports -Christchurch, Auckland andWellington. “Our concern is that ring-fencing some routes on the basisof a limited evaluation will leaveother routes exposed,” Toop told

Hamilton Airport on Virgin/Air NZthe competition watchdog. Toop said HIA supports theproposed alliance, but is seekingassurance that capacity toHamilton will be maintained. “HIA would request that ifindividual routes are to beprotected as a condition of anyACCC approval, then these routesbe on those to New Zealand’s andAustralia’s secondary internationalairports, as well as those airportsidentified as being at risk ofairfare rises,” he added.
