Announcing New Grants And DonationsHelping to contribute to positive change in the com-

munity and a continued dedication to improving the lives of those working and living in the Kootenays is an integral part of the Kootenay Savings philosophy.

Since 2000, the Kootenay Savings Community Foun-dation has distributed nearly $2.7 million to numerous dedicated and worthwhile non-profi t organizations and projects in the Kootenays, and is proudly continuing that tradition of community investment by announcing an additional $101,500 in grants to local non-profi t groups, as well as a total donation of $50,000 to local community foundations.

Th e grants, which are intended to provide assistance to educational, health, social, cultural, environmental and economic non-profi t projects of benefi t to the commun-ity, were awarded to sixteen diff erent organizations. A full

list of all the recipients can be found by visiting www.koo-tenaysavings.blogspot.com.

In recognition of the common goal of giving back and continually supporting the community, $50,000 was also donated to local community foundations, which the re-spective foundations can in turn distribute in their com-munities in the form of grants in 2010 and 2011.

Th e Kootenay-area community foundations benefi tting from the donation are:

• Columbia Valley Community Foundation (Invermere/Radium area).

• Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake (Kaslo area).

• Kimberley and District Community Foundation.• Nakusp and Area Community Foundation.• LeRoi Community Foundation (Greater Trail area).

Along with the donations to the community foundations listed above, the Kootenay Sav-ings Community Foundation will also set aside funds, specifi c to the communities of Castle-gar, Salmo, South Slocan and New Denver, which currently do not have community foun-dations in place.

Headquartered in Trail, Koo-tenay Savings is a member-owned fi nancial institution with thirteen branches throughout the Kootenays, over $840 mil-lion in assets, 41,000 membersand over 275 employees. A four-teenth branch is also currently under construction in South Castlegar. In addition to the Community Foundation, Koo-tenay Savings delivers wealth management strategies through its wholly owned subsidiary, Kootenay Savings MoneyWorks and auto and general insurance through Kootenay Insurance Services.

Flu Fighters Hail Th eir OptionsViruses are invisible and cunning, but when given

the right tools, our natural defenses are too. Th e annu-al fl u shot is very eff ective—and so is a commitment to immune-boosting habits. Take a look at these latest ‘fl u fi ghter’ tips to stick to your fridge:

• Wash your hands, thoroughly and frequently with soap and water. If none is available, rub your hands together very hard to break up lingering cold germs.

• Use a tissue to catch sneezes and coughs. Discard the tissue away from future contact. If no tissue is available, sneeze and cough in your sleeve.

• Don’t touch your face unless you’ve washed your hands fi rst. • Drink plenty of fl uids to fl ush germs out of your system and keep yourself hydrated. • Eat foods containing immune-boosting phytochemicals like dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits. • Do aerobic exercise regularly to pump oxygen from your lungs, to im-prove your circulation, and increase your supply of natur-al virus-killing cells. • Cut out alcohol since it suppresses the immune system and dehydrates the body, slowing your recovery. • Relax quietly or meditate for at least 30 minutes every day to activate your immune system.

GINGER TABBY TIME!

the TRAILBCSPCA

sponsored by

We currently have eight ginger tabbies of various

ages and temperaments. Two are older female kittens between the ages of 4-6 months – one is a little shy but very sweet and playful; and the other is very energetic and outgoing. If you like something a little older we have orange tabbies ranging from 9 months to 11⁄2 years in age. They’re still quite young and playful but with most of the really crazy kitten behaviours behind them. Of these “teenagers”, three are males and two are the slightly rarer orange tabby female. Both females are extremely

playful but somewhat independent, while the teenage boys, although playful, seem to be quite a bit more a ectionate. Two of these boys are also brothers who have wonderfully soft long hair and would love to nd a home together.

For someone looking for a more mature and settled pet, we have Ginger, who is 31⁄2 years old and is a male orange and white bi-coloured

tabby. He is a truly a ectionate love-bug who’d love nothing more than a nice warm, sunny spot to curl up in and take a cat nap.

If any of these golden felines seem to suit your

fancy, please consider looking them up on our website at www.spca.bc.ca/trail under Search Our Adoptable Animals to get more detailed descriptions and photos to help you decide who would better suit your lifestyle.

Stars For Success Program Shining Brighter

Thanks to a generous grant from the CIBC Children’s Foundation, the Stars for Success program can help even more young children to participate in recreation.

“When a child is physically active and interacting posi-tively with other children and adults, they are likely to be healthier, and more socially and emotionally ready for school,” says Dorothy Kaytor, Early Years Coordin-ator with the Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative. However, not all families can afford to pay for their children to participate in community programs. “The $1,700 grant from the CIBC Children’s Foundation will help the Stars for Success program support more chil-dren to enjoy programs like swimming, gymnastics, ski

lessons, dancing, art and music programs, martial arts and CCRR Toy Lending Libraries in their communities,” says Dorothy.

According to Robert Trickey, Branch Manager at CIBC Wood Gundy in Nelson, “This donation was made possible through the proceeds from CIBC Miracle Day, the annual flagship fundraising event for the CIBC Children’s Founda-tion. On Miracle Day, CIBC wholesale banking sales and trading staff and CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisors donate their fees and commissions to children’s charities. Through the efforts of clients and staff over $3.5 million was raised in Canada for children’s charities in 2009.”

The Stars for Success program sponsors children in and around Castlegar, Greater Trail, Kaslo, Nelson, Salmo and the Slocan Valley up to New Denver. The program relies heavily on donations from businesses, individuals and organizations to help hundreds of young children in the West Kootenay to take part in programs. “We are continu-ally seeking donations to replenish the Stars for Success program,” says Dorothy.

Since January, 2010, Stars for Success distributed nearly $9,000 in funding to West Kootenay children ages 0-6. “Our goal is to continue offering assistance to families in need, in a fair and equitable manner, without having to turn eligible families away,” says Dorothy Kaytor.

Stars for Success is a program of Success by 6, a prov-incial partnership between Ministry of Children and Family Development, Credit Union Central and the United Way of the Lower Mainland. The “Stars” program is administered by the United Way Castlegar/Nelson in partnership with the West Kootenay Early Years Office. www.wkearlyyears.ca

Get Ready For Kaslo’s Christmas Celebration

Christmas fun starts this weekend in Kaslo! The Kaslo and Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to

host the 24th Annual Christmas Light Up Parade and Cele-bration on Friday, December 3 from 3 pm to 7 pm. Watch a movie at the Langham, join in the Scavenger Hunt, get your face painted, create a seasonal craft, enter the Merchants’ Great Gift Giveaway, order your Christmas Tree and enjoy roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, hot dogs and more.

Santa arrives at 5:45 pm for the traditional Light Up Pa-rade on Front Street. Stay after the parade and visit Santa’s Village for your chance to meet with Santa and enjoy all the festivities on Front Street.

Donations of unwrapped gifts and non-perishable food items for the North Kootenay Lake Food Cupboard will be accepted at Santa’s Village and Fern’s Flowers.

Be spontaneous and festive, and join the carollers and sing a Christmas carol, to get in the spirit. We are look-ing forward to having lots of people join in the festivities. Come one, Come all!

Walking Helps Banish The BluesAre the short days of winter bringing you down in the

dumps? If you answered yes, this is all the more reason you need to get up and move your body. A 2006 study found that just one bout of exercise – a brisk 30-minute walk – immediately buoyed mood in depressed individuals.

For people with arthritis, walking puts less stress on

your joints and is considered to be much better and safer than running. Walking allows you to stretch your back and leg muscles and joints that can become stiff from sit-ting. The Arthritis Society offers the following tips:

Avoid over-bundling. You should still feel a little cool when leaving the house. If you’re too warmly bundled, you’ll sweat profusely once you get moving, increasing the odds of feeling chilled.

Layer up. Several layers of clothing (and yes, socks!) in-sulate better than the thickest coat, and you can remove items when you get too hot. The inner-most layers should be material that wicks wetness away from skin, such as silk or synthetic fabric but not cotton. The outer-most layer should be wind and waterproof.

Choose fitted garments. A turtleneck prevents cold air from getting sucked down your shirt; baggy clothing does the opposite!

Cover your mouth. Dry winter air can trigger coughing and wheezing. A balaclava or scarf over your nose and mouth helps keep in moisture, making it easier to breathe in the cold air.

Envelop your extremities. Don’t forget a warm hat, mitts, and toasty boots with a deep tread.

Keep moving. It’s the only way to stay warm.Heed burning, tingling. Both of these sensations are

warning signs of frostbite. If you start to experience them, warm the area against your body (for example, tuck freez-ing fingers under your arms) and find shelter ASAP.

Give To Africa Th is ChristmasTh e Nelson Grans to Grans sing for Africa this Christ-

mas. Various community choirs, groups, individual per-formers, and songwriters selected a song from their rep-ertoire that focused on making the world a better place in which to live or dealt with issues of social justice. All forms of music are represented – from classical to blues, to folk, to jazz.

Everyone involved in this CD jumped at the chance to be included in this project. What a great commentary on the willingness of the Nelson community to address third-world issues. All funds raised will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers’ Campaign to assist women in Africa who are supporting orphaned grandchildren.

CDs cost $20 and are available at Otters Book Store, Ellisons, Packrat Annies, Remedy RX and the Kootenay Bakery (December) in Nelson.

Winter Weather Doesn’t Cause Colds A myth still prevails that cold winter weather is the

culprit behind seasonal colds and fl u. However, medical research indicates that those who reside in cold climates are no more likely to suff er a cold than someone who is basking in warm temperatures.

It’s not wet hair or the lack of a hat that causes common illnesses, it’s the fl u or cold germs fl oating in the air that are responsible for these maladies. Th e colder weather may contribute, though. When breathing in cold, dry air, blood vessels can constrict in the nasal passages and dry out in the process, producing less mucous. Th is can make

the nose a more susceptible place for viruses to infi ltrate.Th e cold weather may also aff ect a person’s immune

system response. Some people’s immune systems actually strengthen when the weather is cold, while others’ sys-tems weaken. Th erefore, it’s not exactly the cold weather that causes an illness, but it can play a role.

Similarly, when the weather outside is frightful people spend more time indoors, where airborne germs may be present. Once more, cold weather plays a role in illness but doesn’t exactly cause it.

Whether it’s rain or shine, cold or hot, the best way to avoid colds and the fl u is to wash hands thoroughly and regularly, eat a healthy diet that keeps the body in illness-fi ghting form and avoid others in close quarters when they are sick.

School For Special Needs Mexican Children

Fundraising for the school at Barra de Navidad will conclude at Christmas. Sincere thanks to all those who so generously donated to the events and projects.

All donations will go directly to the school. Your do-nations help to defray the transport costs for the chil-dren who are dependent on the special Handy-Lift bus. Only the bus is provided by the government – there is no funding for gas, driver’s wages, maintenance etc. Th e parents, who can ill aff ord it, must pay if they want their children at school. Th ese children suff er from a wide range of physical and or mental challenges, the same as seen in children in BC: autism, cerebral palsy, deafness, Down syndrome, various unspecifi ed mental challenges as well as brain damage due to an unskilled delivery. Most of these children either cannot travel by public transport or are not close to it. Th e school bus is their life line.

An original painting of the Kaslo Village Hall and surround-ings has been donated by an international artist to assist in fundraising. Just prior to Christ-mas there will be a public give-away of this painting to people who have donated. Look for the painting on Saturdays outside Kaslo Front Street Market.

All donations gratefully re-ceived to improve the lives of these children.

Aviation Alumni Fly Into 40th YearAlumni, founders, faculty and staff of Selkirk College’s

Aviation– Professional Pilot program celebrated their 40-year reunion last month at the Aviation Training Centre in Castlegar. Almost 100 people were in attendance for the wine and cheese reception, the golf tournament at the Castlegar Golf Club and the “test fl ights” on the ALSIM 300 fl ight simulator.

Th e reunion provided an opportunity to meet and greet program founder and recipient of the 2008 Honorary Diploma in Aviation, Dr. John Hall. It also gave second year aviation students a chance to take a fl ight in a Cita-tion executive jet with 2000 alumnus and AirSprint pilot James Elliot.

“It was great to get together and see where everyone

was at,” said Chair of the School of Business and Aviation Henri Bureaud. “Our grads have done some amazing things and taken varied and interesting career paths. It was inspiring not only for me, but for the current students in the program.”

Captain Barry Wiszniowski, 1989 alumnus and Chair of Technical and Safety Division, Air Canada Pilots Asso-ciation, was the emcee for the event. Wiszniowski raised $1250 for the 2011 class by auctioning off the order in which tables were allowed to the buff et dinner.

“A lot of good can come out of these types of gather-ings,” explained Bureaud. “Th e connections with people can prove to be useful, and benefi cial, in this industry.”

Selkirk College’s Aviation - Professional Pilot program trains pilots for entry-level positions in the Canadian Aviation Industry. Th ey tote a program that keeps pace with advances in fl ight technology and has a team of pro-fessional, experienced pilots who have fl ight training, air taxi, commuter, regional, airline, corporate, bush and mil-itary experience.

For more information on the Aviation - Professional Pilot program, visit www.selkirk.ca/aviation or call 1-888-953-1133, ext. 205.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!

• Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What de-tails would you want to know about an item you were interested in buying?

• Include the brand name (manufacturers spend millions promoting the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?

• List the item’s best features and what makes your item different from others in the same category. (Remember, the more you tell, the clearer picture a po-tential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)

• Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not receive calls).

• Include your phone number and the best times to call.

• Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his ad and was pleasantly sur-prised by the response to his ad!
