2. A story of transformation (Case Study)
It was September 2012, when PUPA started journey in
Dhaspara Sumitinagar No 1 GP to collectivize and
strengthen the self help groups. Kalimata a SGSY group, belonging to sansad-2. It was
really disappointing, when we saw that they were not serious about their group. The group
meetings were irregular and not concern about their group issues. Specially we observed that
they were not intend to continue their group for some monetary problem. The group accounts
were not updated and they don’t have any updates about their accounts. Moreover they don’t
have any unity and feeling between members. At that situation PUPA organized a meeting
with them to understand their problems. It was come out that the group members were not
happy with their leaders, specially with secretary. But we also discovered that there was some
ray of hope to revitalise this group because some members wanted to restructure their group.
So we started to motivate others members to take lead to reform their group. We started to
follow up this group to motivate and collectivize once again. Some of members lend their
hand and we also provided our support on group dynamics, account management and
leadership building. Now, Kalimata SGSY dal sit together in group meeting under the
leadership of Smt. BakulRani Das to take any decision and accounts also updated. Specially,
they also participated in social issues, like domestic violence. Now group members are very
happy with their new leader and they were started for planning income generation activities.
We have also started to sensitize the members on Income enhancement plan and suggested
idea to start their own business.
It’s not a story of Kalimata SGSY Dal, now it’s the story of Ma Jamuna SGSY (Mayna
Bidya of Sansad-7), Sibsakti SGSY Dal (Mamata patra of sansad-1), Ramkrisna SHG
(Ranu Majhi, Sansad – 6), Annapurna SGSY (Renuka maity of Sansad-6), Ma Manasha
SGSY(Sunita pramanik) dal… are examples of motivated groups at Dhaspara

“I never knew, there
was a day for us!
Women’s day… A day
only for women. Nibedita* informed me that they are organizing a rally on Saturday to
celebrate the women’s day. I saw the rally of political parties, but a rally only for women! I
am very excited to participate in this rally!... I don’t know how we reached Mahendraganj
bazaar from panchayet!... It’s like a dream! Five members from my group also participated
in this rally. I want to merge once again” said Chandana Sardar a member of Matangini
SGSY, at Mahendraganj bazar after finishing the rally of world women’s day organized by
Paribesh Unnayan Parishad (PUPA) at Dhaspara Sumitinagar‐1 GP (DS‐1) on 8th March, 2014.
The rally was started from DS‐1 GP
and ended at Mahendraganj bazar, a
rural market. (* A field facilitator of
PUPA)
The basic objectives of this rally was
to celebrate the respect, appreciation
and love towards women. To
celebrate women’s economic,
political, and social achievements and
arouse within SHG
women a sense of
self‐esteem.
The rally saw participation of near two‐hundred teenage girls, middle‐aged women as well
as old women of SHGs of DS‐1 GP. PUPA is working in DS‐1 GP to uplift the quality of life and
livelihood of the poor, vulnerable and downtrodden people under livelihood development
project of ICZM. In this project we are focusing specially on women groups to collectivize
them for institutional development,
collective initiative in income
generation activities and participation
in infrastructural development including planning and implementation. PUPA has always
tried to involve the women groups in various activities to improve their capacities and build
self esteem among them. Already,
some women groups have
restructured their groups and
selected new leaders to mobilize
other members of the groups.
Various fundamental rights of
women recognized by the Indian
constitution were highlighted in the
rally with various placards. The
highlighted issues were:
1. Right to equality, including
equality before law, prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste,
gender or place of birth, and equality of opportunity in matters of employment
2. Right to freedom which includes speech and expression.
3. Right to education for women.
4. Right against exploitation and domestic violence.

5. Cultural and Educational
rights preserving Right
of any section of
citizens to conserve
their culture
6. Right to participation
7. Rights to good health of
mother and daughter
The issues were centered on
the equal rights of men and
women.
Various SHGs including Sonar
Bangla SGSY, Bhogini Nibedita SGSY, Ashar Alo SGSY, Kalimata SGSY, Preetilata SHG,
Nibedita SHG, Matangini SGSY, Sima jalobibhavjka, Narisakti SGSY, laksminarayan SGSY,
Siddkiya SGSY, Ma Jamuna SGSY, Ma Sitala SHG, Ma Halima SHG, ma karunamoyee SHG,
Samajkalyan SGSY etc participated in rally with their group members.
Archana Show a participant, said, "Women should participate in more numbers and more of
such rallies should be held in DS‐
1 to motivate us. We are born
and brought up in the village, so
we don’t have the exposure to
participate in various social issues, as we
know men always lead the women. We
need a platform to express ourselves.”
The unique feature was the participation
of Pramanik family as two generations,
Pratima and her daughter‐in‐law
Sumitra participated in the rally Besides,
Manjura Begam and her daughter‐in‐
law Karima Bibi also participated in rally.
“Bouma (daughter‐in‐law) said that she will join in a rally of SHG groups and this really only
for women. I told her to take me with her as I want to see this rally” said Pratima with her
dreamy eyes.
Shefali Patra, a member of Preetilata SHG said at the ending speech, “We are really thankful
to Paribesh Unnayan Parishad to take this initiative to collectivize the women of DS‐1 GP.
Now we started our journey and will reach our destiny. We will actively participate to
Some of posters
A smile of inspiration
Raise voice in various issues related women at Mahendraganj Bazar
construct the brick road and tube‐wells in our area. We will prove that we can run a
successful business.”
Nibedita, a field facilitator of PUPA said, “International Women's Day provided an important
opportunity to reflect on the process of mobilization of women in DS‐1 GP in recent times, and to
focus on the exciting future ahead. Being a woman, I am very happy to participate in this rally.”
These are some moments of inspiration from the rally. Poor and illiterate women require
this type of assembly where they share their experience of struggle, joy, and excitement and
also inspire other women. The one day rally may not change the scenario of women of DS‐1
GP. It needs more follow up and motivation to collectivize the women to develop their own
capacities. Now the biggest challenge will be proper implementation of infrastructure
development (EPA) and livelihood development (IGA) of local area to improve the quality of
life of community members of DS‐1 GP through women groups. Even though they face many
problems but if they succeed, they will be the biggest inspiration to collectivize the other
women in DS‐1 GP as well as in Sagar island. Hopefully, in the next Women’s day, we will
see some successful business women of DS‐1 GP, who will share her success story to
motivate the others.
8. ‘Swanirvar Gosthir Milan Mela’
A dream, a pledge and fulfillment
… An initiative to collectivize the women in DS-I GP, Sagar Island
Back Ground
Presently Paribesh Unnayan Parishad (PUPA) is working with active support of Self Help
Groups in Dhaspara
Sumitinagar‐I Gram
Panchayet (DS‐I GP) to uplift
the quality of life and
livelihood of the poor,
vulnerable and
downtrodden people under
livelihood development
project of integrated coastal
zone management, West Bengal (ICZM). In this project we are focusing specially on women
self help groups( SHGs) to collectivize them for institutional development, collective
initiative in income generation activities and participation in infrastructural development
including planning and implementation to improve the quality of life of the communities of
DS‐I GP. PUPA has always tried to involve the women groups in various activities to improve
their capacities and build self esteem among them. Already, some women groups
restructured their groups and selected new leaders to mobilize other members of the
groups and start a new journey to discover the venture.
Initiative of SHG Meet:
In this position, PUPA is trying to collectivize the all SHGs with active support of SHG leaders
of DS‐I GP under a roof to start a collective journey of 152 SHGs including 120 women
Groups, 24 mixed groups. As per dream, PUPA discussed with SHG members for a meet,
where they will share their views and celebrate with each other regarding social, political
and economic empowerment of the women and also a day for amusing of the women. The
basic objectives of this meet will be to celebrate the respect, appreciation and love towards
women of DS‐1 GP, Sagar Island and to celebrate women’s economic, political, and social
achievements and arouse within SHG women a sense of self‐esteem. So we had several
discussions with the SHG women to organize a day long meet of the SHGs. 40‐50 leaders of
SHGs came together to assemble a meet. After 3‐4 meetings, they confirmed a date for SHG
meet on June 8, 2014 at Mahendraganj high school. They also selected a name for the meet
“Swanirvar Gosthir Milan Mela”.
A core team of Meet
SHG women finalized and divided in various group to manage the whole day programme.
The best thing of this event will be the women participation and willingness to take
responsibilities for success of a work. Besides, SHG women also exhibit their work and skills
in various stalls in the event. In this gala event, PUPA is helping the SHG women in various
works to make the event a grant success.
