PUNK ROCK MOVEMENT OF THE 80’S
Punk rock was aggressively more modern, and it wanted to distance itself from the
sentimentality of the early 1970’s rock. The rebellion of punk rock was long awaited because
people were growing tired of endless rock solos going nowhere, and people were getting over the
clean cut, preppy pointless look “Punk drew lines! It divided the young from the old, the rich
from the poor, then the young from the young, the old from the old, the rich from the rich, the
poor from the poor, rock and roll from rock and roll”
Early punk rock fashion was anti-materialistic, it made the dirty grunge look socially acceptable
it was very simple clothes such as a T-shirt, Jeans, leather jackets, it was an affordable look for
the lower class. Second hand dress clothes were now acceptable and were praised more as
opposed to the expensive colorful clothing the popular hippie and disco scene had going on.
The Ramones are very influential to this day because they were the original American punk rock
rebels, they are very special to many fans because they had a dream and despite all odds in the
music industry, they managed to lived out their dream of making it as a band. The Ramones
wore their skinny tight fitted 505 Levi’s jeans which looked distressed and ripped from the
knees, this way a major shift from the All-American look society was accustomed to, where
everything was worn very clean cut, especially a pair of well manufactured Levi’s jeans. The
ripped Levi’s were paired with tight simple t-shirts accompanied with small fitted leather jackets.
To finish off, the outfits would be paired up with classical Nike tennis shoes. The bands overall
look and attitude was a new wave of timeless American style and frighteningly unique. Their
hair was long black and messy, untamed.
The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band, who were one of the most influential bands
during the punk movement. The Sex Pistols had a very short, turbulent existence and only
released one single studio album, “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” which was
enough to change the course of popular music. “The Pistols were inspired by anger and poverty,
not art and poetry” the Sex Pistols constructed and gave foundation to the new subculture known
as punk. They are highly known for the anti-establishment musical movement that took place
during the late 70’s early 80’s.
The Clash was an English punk rock band formed in 1976. The band members included Joe
Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky Headon. The Clash gained success all over
with their political lyrics, rebellious attitudes which addressed real life social issued of its time,
such as poverty, petty injustice, and political injustice. Like many punk bands The Clash heavily
protested against monarchy and aristocracy, they were involved in such groups as the Anti-Nazi
League.
My Punk rock Jacket was created with the heavily influenced DIY punk aesthetic, the leather
jacket was from a yard sale and I wanted to make sure these main influential punk rock bands
were represented in my jacket. Punk rock was a rebellion against an unjust system and I wanted
to make sure I incorporated this sense of rebellion.
