Les Cretes, Chardonnay 2014 690

Les Cretes, Pinot Noir 2014 650

The Aosta Valley grapes and wines are primarily determined by the characteristic predominant

soil composed of a rocky, gritty, semi-fertile mixture and by high altitude. Overall, the region’s

wines are as singular as its dialects and traditions. The Institut Agricole Regional has

catalogued thirteen grapes considered native to the region and the most of them are used

as blends in the majority of local DOC-labeled wines. The most widespread among the

“indigenous” grapes are the red Petit Rouge in French, and the Fumin, Syrah-like grape

anticipated by some local vintners as the future number one native red.The main regional

grape however, is the Picotendro, a local version of Nebbiolo that gives the DOCs produced

in Donnas and Arnad a resemblance to Barolo. In addition, both the Moscato Bianco, here

known as Muscat Chambave, and the local Pinot Grigio (confusingly called Malvoisie in the

Chambave and Nus areas) are made into exotically fruity wines that can be either dry or sweet.

Called Oenotrua by the Ancient Greeks (meaning "land of vines"), Piemonte and its wines played a

pivotal role in the unification of Italy. During the Risorgimento, in the 19th century, many winemakers

from the region made every effort to create a unified Italy. Dolcetto, Barbera, Arneis, Cortese are

few of the well-known grape variety in this region and of course Nebbiolo that gave birth to the

world famous Barbaresco and Barolo.Barolo: The wine, with its peculiar richness of colors caused

by the Nebbiolo grape, soon becoming a favorite among the nobility of Turin and the ruling House

of Savoy, gave rise to the popular description of Barolo as “the wine of kings, the king of wines"

Lombardia is the most populous and richest region in the country and one of the wealthiest in the whole of Europe. Being Italy's most dynamic industrial, commercial and financial center, this region is no less exceptional in their wines. It is known particularly for its sparkling wines made in the Franciacorta area, south of Lake Iseo in the province of Brescia. These wines are produced following the style of Champagne, having the second fermentation in the bottle and the stum being in contact with the yeast for at least 18 months. The Oltrepò Pavese area is the leader with more than half of all the wine produced in the region, along the Po river Valley, that was once a part of the Piedmont region. For this reason some varieties such as: Barbera and Nebbiolo (i.e. to make Barolo and Barbaresco in Piedmont) are still grown in the area.

The rugged terrain of this slender seaside region makes grape growing a challenge. The most famous Ligurian wine is Cinque Terre (Five Lands). Vineyards here are so steep that a monorail system has been built for harvest time to carry the grapes bushels to the production houses. The wines are mostly dry whites from Bosco Albarola & Vermentino

Veneto is a great wine region in north-eastern Italy. The region’s capital and largest city is the world famous Venice, as part of the ancient Republic of Venice, having been an inde-pendent state for more than a millennium, fostered famous artistic, musical and culinary traditions.

Due to this rich cultural legacy, the wines from Veneto are rated among the best not only in Italy but all over the world.

Two emblematic wines from the region are:

Prosecco. A sparkling wine traditionally produced in the areas near Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso. The wine is usually made using the Charmat method, in which the secondary fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks.

Amarone della Valpolicella. A typically rich Italian dry red wine made from the partially dried grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara local varieties. The name Amarone, in Italian, literally means "the Great Bitter".

This was originally to distinguish it from the Recioto della Valpolicella produced in the same region, which is sweeter in taste. The amarone is thought to have been created by chance, by completely fermenting a barrel of Recioto.

The Trentino-Alto Adige – Südtirol area is a region located in north-east Italy. The region is noted for the distinct German and Austrian influences on the wine industry due to the region's long history under the rule of Austria-Hungary and Holy Roman Empires.

Because of its peculiar location within the Southern Alps and Dolomites, the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol grows a wide range of grape varieties. These include Müller-Thurgau, Schiava, Lagrein, Sylvaner, Riesling and Gewürztraminer (also known as Traminer Aromatico). The origin of the grape Gewürztraminer traces back to the village Tramin, located near Bolzano.

Friuli–Venezia Giulia is Italy's most North-Eastern region. The climate is distinguished with very warm days and chilly nights that help maintain a balance in the grape between acidity and sugar levels, allowing the vines a slow growing season.

The area is known predominantly for its whites who are considered some of the best examples of Italian wines. Of the many local varieties, verduzzo Friulano is the most known grape producing crisp, floral wines that develop notes of nuts and fennel as it ages. The acidic Ribolla gialla produces soft and buttery wines that still retain the crisp, lemon edge of the grape.

Among the reds, Schioppettino (meaning "gunshot" and sometimes called Ribolla nera) produces very tannic wines with spice and pepper notes behind the ripe fruit flavors.

Known for its scenic landscapes and its rich artistic legacy, being the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Toscana is also the region which formed Italy’s language,

assuming a central role in the country’s culture and self-image.Toscana has been home to many influential people in the history of arts and science, such as Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei. The region boasts a unique culinary tradition (Pappa al pomodoro, Ribollita, Bistecca alla Fiorentina) harmoniously paired to its wines. Chianti

Classico and Brunello di Montalcino are certainly among the most famous and appreciated wines in Italy and abroad.Nonetheless the region presents other outstanding wines: the Supertuscans are made with the assistance of other grapes varieties and in an

international style. The Vin Santo, (literally “holy wine”), is the classic Tuscan amber-colored dessert wine to try with Cantucci, the oblong-shaped almond biscuits from Prato.

Marche is the eastern-most region in the central belt of Italy, stretching from Toscana through Umbria to the Adriatic coast. The climate is temperate with a Mediterranean vegetation of cypress, umbrella pine, olive, and vine.

Cesare Mondavi, who laid the foundations of one of the most famous wine producers in the world, emigrated from this region in the early 20th century.

The Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Roncaglia. These white wines are now produced without skin contact and with temperature-controlled fermentation. This new modern style does not affect the lemony acidity and bitter almond of the aftertaste still identifiably present in the bottles.

Umbria is the fourth smallest of Italy’s 20 regions in terms of both physical size and population, but it is undergoing some exciting vinous developments.

Orvieto is still the region’s biggest DOC, accounting for 80 percent of Umbria’s total DOC production. This DOC produces white wines based on the Trebbiano grape, which is locally called Procanico.

Sangiovese is the region’s principal red grape variety, giving pleasant wines in the Colli Amerini, Colli Martani, and Colli Perugini. Sangiovese has reached its heights in the wines produced in the Torgiano DOCG, blended with Sagrantino as Rosso di Montefalco.

This last variety, which in the past yielded notably rustic wines high in tannins, demonstrated lately that it can respond well to more careful vinification and ageing techniques.

Emilia Romagna is an Italian wine region which stretches across north central Italy from the eastern Adriatic coast to include vast tracts of inland Emilia in the west, which is quite distinct from coastal Romagna in the east. Bologna, its capital, is home to the oldest university in the world founded in 1088. Among other cities, Modena, Parma and Ferrara are a centre for food and automobile production such as the world famous and unique automotive companies such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, De Tomaso and Ducati. Sangiovese is the main grape variety grown in Emilia Romagna, producing Sangiovese di Romagna wines that can compete with good Tuscan Sangiovese. Lambrusco is a local grape producing a very particular type of red wine: semi-sparkling, off-dry, light bodied and pleasant to drink. A wine that all Italians love!

Surrounded by Latium, Apulia, Campania and Abruzzo (wich encompassed Molise until 1970), the region has all the potential for producing wines of a similar quality to its neighbours, but seems to struggle with creating a unique identity for its wines. The influences of the Appenins and the Adriatic create excellent growing conditions for both Italian and International grape varieties. The DOC’s of Biferno and Pentro di isernia are for red, white and rose’ producing some quality reds from Montepulciano and delicate whites predominantly from Trebbiano.

Campania is a region of south west Italy of which Naples is the capital..Aglianico, grown also in Basilicata, produces red wine of unquestionable character in the Taurasi DOCG near Avellino, and Aglianico del Taburno DOCG near Benevento.Notable too is the production of white wines as Fiano d’Avellino and Greco di Tufo. These wines have an aromatic dimension (pears and hazelnuts for the Fiano; peaches and almonds for the Greco) that few other native Italian varieties can match.

Puglia is a region in Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east and

the Ionian Sea to the southeast. Its most southern portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy. The most representative grape variety is

Negroamaro. The wine tends to be very deep in color. As a result, although “amaro” is the Italian for “bitter”, Wines made from this grape tend to be very rustic in character,

combining perfume with an earthy bitterness.Primitivo, having its similarity to California’s Zinfandel, derives its name from Latin “primativus”, when a priest in Gioia del Colle (Bari)

Basilicata, also known as Lucania, is a mountainous region virtually land-locked in the south of Italy, having one short southwestern coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea between Campania in the northwest and Calabria in the southwest. Although the commercial or industrial activity is not highly developed, the region has improved greatly the production of fine wines over the past few years. Aglianico – “Barolo of the South”For its high tannins, acidity, and it’s evident ability to age, Aglianico has inspired some to call it the Barolo of the South. It is the signature grape of Basilicata, and undoubtedly one of the most important wines of Italy’s south, being awarded the status of DOCG with the Aglianico del Vulture Superiore

Calabria is a region located at the "toe" of the Italian Peninsula. Only 5 percent of the total surface area of the region’s agricultural land is planted with vines, most of them on the north. The most importact DOC by far is Cirò, where a certain viticultural tradition exists and where Tancredi Biondi-Santi of Montalcino operated as a consultant during the decades immediately following the Second World War. Gaglioppo, the principal red grape of the region, is the base of Cirò.

Sardegna is a Mediterranean island 200 kilometers off the coast of Italy at its nearest point, governed by Carthage before conquest by Ancient Rome, and subsequently by Byzantines, Arabs, and Catalans. The island became an integral part of Italy only in 1726, when it was ceded to the House of Savoy. Being historically detached from the mainstream of Italian civilization, it is no surprise that most of its significant grape varieties, Vermentino, Cannonau, and Carignan, are of Spanish origin. Refreshing bottles of Vermentino di Gallura, produced in the island’s north, do exist, acquiring the wine’s promotion to a DOCG status in 1996. Cannonau, thought to be a clone of Grenache and accounting for 20 percent of the island’s total production, has produced some good wines in the province of Nuoro, particularly in the subzone of Oliena.
