Happy Valentine’s Day!
What’s the best part about Valentine’s
Day?
The day after when all the candy is on sale.
What did the painter say to her sweetheart?
I love you with all my art.
I asked my friend if he'd bought his wife a
gift for Valentine's Day.
He's a bit of a chauvinist pig so he
surprised me when he replied, "Yeah, I've
got her a belt and a bag."
I said, "That's very thoughtful of you.
I hope she appreciates it."
He said, "So do I. And hopefully the
vacuum cleaner will work much better
now."

Celebrating Manitoba’s 150
Friday July 10th Band: Pop Vegas
Attendance was down somewhat this
past summer. 380 visitors toured the facil-
ity, 115 of which were local, 158 from
elsewhere in Manitoba, 105 from other
provinces and 2 from U.S.A. Brett Lane
and Phoebe Vidler were our summer stu-
dents. Bus tours came from Winnipeg and
the Wawanesa Grade 11 class came to
visit.
The contribution from the commu-
nity in the form of burger chefs, pie bak-
ers, Free Tuesday sponsors and other vol-
unteers is greatly appreciated. Hamburger
Days were successful once again as 1,703
burgers were cooked and served. We
would like to thank the Royal Bank staff,
the Shur Gro staff, Dave & May Krekle-
wich, Patricia Wilton and Denise Brown
for their expertise on the barbeques. The
Municipality appointed Michelle Sowiak
as the representative to our Board of Di-
rectors.
Upgrades to the Museum included a
new brick foundation for the barbeque,
shingling around the skylight, some light-
ing repairs, cosmetic repairs and a new
coat of paint on the Rounthwaite Church.
A dehumidifier was donated by the
Wawanesa Mutual.
To celebrate Manitoba’s birthday,
Dorothy Haithwaite, Katie Urquhart and
Margaret Brown visited the Wawanesa
Grade 2 class with Manitoba in a Suitcase.
Free admission passes and brochures were
given to campers in our campground. A
commemorative copy of the most recent
history book, Sipiweske, has been placed
under glass. In cooperation with Daly
House Museum, articles from World War I
will be displayed until May.
The front display did not change from
2018, but thank you to Beth Smale who
kindly allowed us to use her miniature dis-
plays throughout the museum and graciously
donated the school display to the museum. In
August, a well attended movie night under
the stars took place, complete with popcorn
and refreshments. Thank you to the Lane
family.
Appreciation is expressed to the
Wawanesa Community Foundation for their
assistance in setting up the Heritage Trust
Program which will help support Sipiweske
Museum in the future. Thank you also to Ken
Turner for cleaning the barbeques and for
helping Neil Bok with maintenance work.

CORY, JAMES KENNETH (JIM) of Brandon
MB, formerly of Wawanesa MB passed away on
January 25, 2020 in his 94th year. Predeceased
by his wife of 51 years Marjorie Ann in 2004,
his son Blair in 1983 and daughter Marsha in
2009. He is survived by his wife, formerly
Jeanette Gehrling of Brandon.
Jim was born July 23, 1926 at the family
farm near Nesbitt, MB, the seventh of 13 chil-
dren of Bert and Eva Cory. He was educated in
Nesbitt School and Success Commercial College
in Winnipeg. He was employed by Wawanesa
Mutual Insurance Company from January 24,
1946 until retirement on July 31, 1987.
On December 27, 1952 Jim married
Marjorie Ann Wood and together they raised
eight children. Jim was active in the Wawanesa
community. He was a Cub Master, member of
the Wawanesa Band and volunteered with Cana-
dian Red Cross. Jim was an active member of
Wawanesa United Church Choir for 40 years and
served on the Church Board. He was a Mason
from 1948, past Master of Wawanesa Lodge #67
and presently a member of Wheat City Lodge
#168. Jim was proud to have been presented his
70-year pin in 2018.
Music was an important interest all his
life. Outside of the local scene in Wawanesa, Jim
and Marjorie were charter members of the West-
ern Manitoba Philharmonic Choir from its incep-
tion in 1966 until its demise in the 1970s. He and
Marjorie sang together at many weddings, funer-
als and other community events over the years.
Jim played fiddle, recorder and clarinet and had
varied music tastes. He enjoyed listening to CBC
radio.
For many years Jim was active in Minor
Sports and encouraged his kids to participate in
hockey, baseball, skating, canoeing and cycling.
He enjoyed curling and golf. Jim’s love of the
family farm carried over into his passion for
vegetable and flower gardening. He loved mak-
ing trips back to Sunnybrook Farm throughout his
life. Jim took the family on many camping trips
and travelled extensively throughout Britain,
Europe, the United States and Canada.
Jim’s keen interest in education was ex-
pressed in his eight years as Secretary-Treasurer
of Wawanesa School District and 18 years (1974-
1992) as Trustee for Souris Valley School Divi-
sion. In 1992 Jim was awarded the Commemora-
tion Medal for the 125th anniversary of Canadian
Confederation in recognition of service to com-
munity and Canada. This was a source of great
pride to him.
In 1998 Jim and Marjorie sold their home
in Wawanesa and moved to Brandon. They be-
came members of Prairie Oasis Senior Centre
where Jim participated in choir and floor shuffle-
board. Jim resided in Victoria Landing from Oc-
tober 2007 until his re-marriage in August 2011.
He led the singing group there, along with his
wife Jean. In June 2019 Jim and Jean moved to-
gether to Victoria Landing.
Jim leaves a large family legacy. He is sur-
vived by his six children Dale (Susan), Mark
(Michelle), Owen (Melanie), Paul, Myra (Rob)
and Neil (Leslie); nine grandchildren Craig
(Kate), Michael, Matthew, Chelsea (Theo),
Emma, Alyssa (Cody), Samantha (Tyler), Jack-
son, and Ryan; and five great-grandchildren
Liam, Vanessa, Daniel, Phillip and Brooklyn. He
is remembered by many nieces, nephews, ex-
tended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
in Jim’s memory to the Wawanesa Community
Foundation, Wawanesa MB R0K 2G0 https://
www.wawanesacommunityfoundation.com/.
Graveside service to be held at Minnewawa

Cullen: We wish to thank eve-

our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Jason &
Tracy, Clinton & Carmel, Trent & Mel
and our amazing grandchildren made us
especially proud of the way they organ-
ized and thought of every detail to make
it a memorable occasion. The photogra-
pher, the beautiful decorations, the slide-
show, and background music were all
special added touches that we really ap-
preciated. Thank you to the Wawanesa
Women’s Club for catering the delicious
roast beef supper. December is a very
busy month and we really appreciated
everyone who took time to share our spe-
cial evening with us. Thanks
also to all the people who
were unable to attend but sent cards and

Wawanesa & District Recreation Cen-
tre would like to thank Leonard Plett for the
dedicated bookkeeping he has offered us for
the past number of years. He has assisted
the board immensely and has helped lead
the rink to a bright future. Thank you Leo-
nard. We look forward to seeing you around
the rink, watching your grandchildren en-
joying the facility in the coming years!
Going forward, the Wawanesa & Dis-
trict Recreation Centre has amalgamated its
bookkeeping with the Souris River Recrea-
tion Commission and the R.M. of Oakland-
Wawanesa. This will allow the Souris River
Recreation Commission to manage and op-
erate all of the recreation facilities in the
R.M of Oakland-Wawanesa under one um-
brella with one set of books and one set of
financial processes.
If you aren’t aware of the changes,
Dustin Brown is now the Facilities manager
for Souris River Recreation Commission.
Dustin is in charge of the day to day opera-
tions of the Recreation Centre, Riverbend
ball diamonds, the water park and the camp-
grounds in the summer. Dustin can be
reached at 204-724-3988.
Tracy Cullen is staying on with the
Souris River Recreation Commission.
Tracy’s role going forward will be looking
after all of the recreation programs that are
offered as well as filling out and completing
grant applications and organizing fundrais-
ers. Tracy can be reached at 204-741-0421.
Souris River Recreation Commission
looks forward to the changes that we have
implemented and the challenges that lay
ahead of us as we turn a page on a new chap-
ter in recreation in the R.M of Oakland-
Wawanesa.

Everyone is Welcome
I believe winter has been kind to us so
far. A mild winter makes for slushy and icy
road conditions. When people ask me if I miss
Ontario winters I say, not at all. Rain in Janu-
ary and icy roads. It gets hard regulating hu-
midity in the barns. No, I actually like Mani-
toba’s winter. When winter hits, it stays win-
ter.
Starting in January we began going
through the book of Hebrews. It is a book that
clearly states who Jesus is. It also reflects on
the presence of God through the journey of the
Israelites. There is no doubt of the Love of
God and the sacrifice of Jesus.
Since the beginning of January, Sunday
school starts at 10:00 a.m. and the church ser-
vice starts at 11:00 a.m. February 2 is a pot-
luck lunch and people are asked to bring a
favourite game to spend the afternoon to-
gether.
I, Garnet, am looking forward to hear-
ing the speakers at Missionfest Manitoba,
being held at Church of the Rock, Winni-
peg, February 7-9. There will be a guest
speaker at Treesbank February 9.
Smile!
Q. Did Adam and Eve ever have a
date?
A. No, they had an apple!
Q. What did the flame say to his
buddies after he fell in love?
A. “I found the perfect match!”
Did you hear about the bed bugs who
fell in love? They’re getting married in
the spring!
Q: What do you call a very small
valentine?
A: A valen-tiny!

Valentine’s Day One legend contends that Valentine
was a priest who served during the
third century in Rome. When Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men
made better soldiers than those with
wives and families, he outlawed mar-
riage for young men. Valentine, realiz-
ing the injustice of the decree, defied
Claudius and continued to perform
marriages for young lovers in secret.
When Valentine’s actions were discov-
ered, Claudius ordered that he be put to
death.
