Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to visit our school today and I encourage you to become involved with the PTA.

Observations

At first glance of our data for the past five years, I have three general observations.

We need to focus on 8th grade mathematics instruction as this area has had the lowest scores for the past five years.

8th grade reading also has low scores but they do not correlate with low writing scores.

6th grade mathematics and reading scores are the highest in our school, what are those teachers doing instructionally that we can carry over to 7th and 8th grade?

School Learning Goals

Improve 8th grade performance across all three testing areas- Reading, Math, and Writing.

Focus on reading skills across all three grade levels, as we score lower in reading than math across the grade levels and consistently score below the district average in this subject.

Continue to support 6th grade learning gains.

Accomplishing Learning Goals

Improve 8th grade performance through collaboration of teachers. Use School Improvement funds to pay teachers for after-hours planning to collaborate and observe 6th grade teachers and their current methods.

Improve reading performance through remediation and intervention. Increase support staff by reallocating aides to push-in to classrooms and have ESE teachers pull out during this time.

Support 6th grade learning gains through understanding and preservation of current teaching and implementation methods.

Reach out to district schools that are above average in 8th grade subjects and overall in reading to see what their teachers are doing to produce learning gains.

Going Forward

We are proud of the successes of Smith Middle School. As a school and community we expect the very best from our students. Moving forward, we want to see student performance exceeding the district average. We would like to see Smith Middle School become a model for the district and state for top academic performance. Our goal is to create a culture of pride and success at Smith Middle School where education is individualized and every student is successful at accomplishing learning gains.

Thank You

I fully recognize that no job at our school is more important than another.

We could not be successful without our teachers and support staff. From the custodians, to lunchroom staff, aides, coaches, and teachers. You each have contributed to the gains our students have made. I encourage us all to be open minded, to learn from one another and never be afraid to question and change our methods.

Community Involvement

My door is always open to you as parents and community members.

If you have any ideas or suggestions after reviewing this data on how we can improve as a school please share them with me. We would love to have your feedback and involvement.
