Composer Notes 5

“The more deeply we grow into the psalms and the more often we pray them as our own, the more simple and rich will our prayer become.”

—Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This psalm collection, written over the course of the last two-plus decades and revised recently to include newly approved texts from the USCCB, includes both psalms that are well-known and also less-known. The texts of the psalms were originally written for everyday use, and we would all benefit from daily use of the Scriptures to guide us through life. Every year of our existence brings us new challenges, but the texts of the psalms remain as relevant today as when they were written centuries ago!

Let the Peoples Praise You: Psalms for the Liturgical Year would not be possible without the following individuals: Music Editor John Kyler, a former student at the University of Notre Dame who is now a trusted advocate, fellow composer and colleague; engraver Tony Ward, a fellow composer who had many helpful suggestions in arriving at this final product; those in Campus Ministry at Notre Dame who have given me support and encouragement through the years, particularly colleague Steve Warner who encouraged me to write many of these psalms; my husband Scott and children Emma, Claire and Joseph for their constant support and belief in my abilities. My departed parents Jerome and Estelle Schneider laid the foundation for my faith, for which I am eternally grateful, and my mother in particular always encouraged my development as a well-rounded musician for the Church: organist, choir director, singer, composer, liturgist.

Last but not least, I am grateful for the countless students I was privileged to work with in my 23 years at Notre Dame directing the Celebration Choir, Handbell Choir, and assisting with the Notre Dame Folk Choir. Each student helped to inspire every one of these compositions that made their debut at the beautiful Basilica of the Sacred Heart on our campus.

My hope is that these psalms will inspire and move all who hear and proclaim them to live out their faith in service to others and in praise of our ever-loving God. Soli deo Gloria!
