In athletics, we pride ourselves on balancing intercollegiate completion with successful matriculation of academic purpose. We offer articulate paths to an A.A. degree, to certifi cate completion, and to four-year school and transfer. Through a wide variety of college-level disciplines, we serve equally students with polished academic resumes and those who require remedial course work. HISTORY IN THE MAKING The 1992-93 year was very special at Merced College. For the second time in the College’s thirty year history they put a women’s basketball team on the court to compete in intercollegiate athletics. Prior to the 1992-93 season, the College did fi eld a club team that played fi fteen games. They fi nished 4-11 playing teams up and down the Valley. In 1992 the movement to bring intercollegiate basketball to Merced College was started. The movement was spearheaded by Gather Haynes (retired school administrator), Patty Davis (ASMC Secretary), and Jim Nolan (Student Athletic Representative). They, along with the Over-50 Club lead a long and hard fi ght that would eventually bring women’s basketball to Merced College. There were two main issues that were at stake in bringing women’s basketball to the College. The fi rst issue centered on Title IX of the Education Amendment, passed in 1972. It simply states: No person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefi ts of, or subjected to, discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal fi nancial assistance. The second reason for bringing basketball to Merced College was the need for it. There were plenty of high school graduates that wanted to play basketball in college but had to leave the district to play at Kings River College, College of the Sequoias, and Fresno City College. Timing became an important factor if the College was going to fi eld a team in the 1992-93 season. Because it was months after the recruiting period had started, a coach had to be found quickly. What the College needed was a coach who could bring in instant stability and recognition. Like in 1962 the College Board and hiring committee called upon Don Reid. In Reid, they would get a California Community College Hall of Fame Coach and the winningest men’s basketball coach in California Community College history. In his twenty-four years as men’s coach at Merced College, Don won 563, lost 216 games, won 15 conference championships, and 2 State Championships. Coach Reid, Allen Huddleston (his assistant), and Joy Boyenga (a USF basketball standout), put together a team of recent and past high school players some hadn’t played in over three years. The Lady Blue Devils consisted of LeGrand scoring sensation Martha Manzo, Salinas High School standout, Jennifer Banks, former Merced High standout, Sherae Burkley, 6-4 Dennise Shally, Monique Orum, Jennifer Bertuccio, Letitia Giliam, Sherry Spangler, Yvonne Hall, Shylise Henderson, and Jennifer Jones. The Lady Blue Devils played their fi rst game on November 12th. Though they lost to Fresno CC 61-54, they showed that they were ready and could compete with any team. The Lady Blue Devils’ fi rst victory came November 17th when the Lady Blue Devils traveled to Monterey Peninsula College. Between the fi rst victory and the start of conference play the Lady Blue Devils played in the consolation championship at the Kings River College Tournament. 6-4 center Denise Shally set a school record with 12 blocked shots in the consolation game. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished third in the Lassen Tournament, 10th in the twenty-four teams East Bay Classic, and 3rd in the Santa Barbara Tournament. In these tournaments the Lady Blue Devils had their fi rst ever All-Tournament team selection when Martha Manzo was selected to the All-East Bay Classic Team. Before the conference play started, the Lady Blue Devils had beaten three ranked teams, and had an 11-8 record. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season 15-15 overall and 4-4 Camino Norte Conference record. In conference play they were 3-1 after the fi rst round and in second place. Though they ended up in third place, they qualifi ed for the end of the season conference tournament. They lost their fi rst game and did not qualify for the State Regional Playoffs, but beat Santa Rosa to fi nish in third place in the conference tournament. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season with the best record of any fi rst year community college basketball team. They even had more victories than all of the other new teams combined. From the fi rst year to the second, the Lady Blue Devils made an outstanding jump in level of play. They won six more games than in their fi rst year. The 1993-94 Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season 21-7 and ranked 12th in Northern California. Also for the fi rst time the Lady Blue Devils played in the State Regional Playoffs. During the regular season the Lady Blue Devils played in four tournaments. They won the inaugural Pepsi Central Valley Classic, and the Santa Barbara Tourney. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished second in the tough Lassen Tourney. Martha Manzo led the team in scoring for the second year in a row and became the fi rst player selected to the Northern California All-Star Team. Martha Manzo, Jennifer Bertuccio, Monique Orum, and Ava Garrett were selected to the All-Camino Norte Conference Team. Team wise, the Lady Blue Devils fi nished with the State’s second best defense giving up an average of 51.5 points a game. The Lady Blue

Devils held a Cabrillo College team to just 4 points in the fi rst half and 12 points in the game.

The 1993-94 season also marked an end of a short era in women’s’ basketball history at Merced College. Martha Manzo, Jennifer Bertuccio, Monique Orum, Yvonne Hall, Letitia Giliam, and Dennise Shally fi nished their careers at Merced College. Those six original team members were apart of two teams that won 36 and lost 22. They set or reset 23 individual records, and had 1 All-State, 5 All-Conference, and 7 All-Tournament selections.

The Blue Devils were lead by sophomore center and State All-Star selection Marina Sanchez. She led the team in scoring with 13.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. The “97-98” team was more than a one person show...a total team effort helped the Blue Devils hold opponents to just 53.5 points a game. The Lady Blue Devils had four players return with a lot of playing experience from the previous year, and they helped bring together some really talented freshmen into a contending team. The Lady Blue Devils again made it into the State Regional Playoffs losing to Santa Rosa. The 1998-99 Lady Blue Devils fi nished back in the familiar top of the CVC with a 10-2 record, and 22-13 overall record. A year with many spectacular highs, the Blue Devils won the Cuesta Tournament, knocked off highly ranked San Jose City College, and beat arch-rival Modesto JC by a record 45 points (78-33). The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season ranked 9th in Northern California in were seeded 13th in the regional playoffs. They lost to eventual State Final Eight Merritt College in the second round of the playoffs. The Ladies were paced by outstanding performances by conference MVP Hannah Low, 1st team All-CVC selection Laura Avila, Kori Machado, and Danielle Broglio. For the Lady Blue Devils it was the fourth year in a row that they had the conference MVP. The 1999-2000 Lady Blue Devils struggled and fought through a 14-17 basketball season. Always taking on challenges, the Blue Devils found that not only will the preseason be tough, but also the Central Valley Conference. In their own tournament three of the fi nal four teams were from the conference including Porterville in the tournament championship game. While they had their ups and downs, the Lady Blue Devils did manage to defeat Fresno City College 80-79 and knock them out of any chance at winning the conference championship, Modesto JC, Taft, and COS to fi nish in fourth place and earn a birth in the State PlayoffsLead by second time CVC-MVP Hannah Low the Ladies did set school records. Hannah Low again led the team in scoring with 16.6pts, and rebounds with a school record 14.2 per game. She shattered the school record for single season rebounding, with 439, and free throws made (137). Marion Laird broke Martha Manzo’s year old record for 3pt shooting percentage with 38.1%. The Lady Blue Devils rose to the top of the Northern California rankings only to have a hard fall in the 2nd round of the State Regional Playoffs. What that doesn’t say is how great the season was. The Blue Devils fi nished with their second best record ever at 29-5, and a conference championship. They won the Cuesta, Merced, Cypress and DeAnza Tournaments. Jeannette Jimenez became the sixth Blue Devil in a row to be named the Conference MVP. She and Rataya Williams, and Shickola Ricks were First Team All-Conference. The Lady Blue Devils had a front line that was second to none. Three players were 6-0 or taller and dominated teams averaging over 28 rebounds, and scoring more than 40 points a game. The Lady Blue Devils in 2001-02 started out slowly, but came on strong as the season progressed. With a third place fi nish at the Merced Tourney, it looked like things would get on track fast, but that wasn’t the case. They entered conference play with a 5-11 record, and turned the whole season around. With two time Conference MVP Jeanette Jimenez, and All-Conference selection Chrissy Brasher leading the way, the Blue Devils won 11 and lost only 1 to win their second consecutive conference championship. Guard Kristen Rocha broke a school record with 14 assists against Hartnell College. They won their second round playoff game before losing to Butte College in the third round of the regional playoffs. A year of many highs, and lows, it was one of character building. The 2002-03 season became a dream season. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished with their third consecutive Central Valley Conference championship and a perfect 12-0 record. Overall the Lady Devils fi nished with a 30-7 record, and a birth in the State Final Eight in San Diego. Fifteen team or individual records were set including most wins in a row with 15, most team points 2,698, and best team fl oor shooting with 42.6%. Four of fi ve starters were named to the First Team All-Central Valley Conference, and the fi fth starter was named to the Second Team. All-State and Conference MVP Rataya Williams set team records with 38 points against Taft, most free throws attempted in a game with 15. First Team All-Conference selection Meagan Karker lead the team with school records of 202 attempted 3 pointers and 74 3 pointers made. They along with fellow starters Deshunna Ricks and Alicia “Bubba” Costa were also named to the First Team All-Central Valley Conference. Guard Maria Garcia was a Second Team All-Conference selection with Courtne Evans. What they accomplished last year will only be a spring board to the 2003-04 team. .The 2003-04 season turned out to be a good one. With the Lady Blue Devils going 27-6 overall and 10-2 in conference. If there is a down side to the season it is because they slipt to second place in the confrence standings for the fi rst time in four years, and they went out of the State Playoffs in the Final 8 like the year before. The Lady Blue Devils won the Cuesta, Merced, and fi nished second in the Delta, and De Anza Tournaments. They were lead by leading scorer Deshunna Ricks, Alisha Costa, and Martrese “Mimi” Austin who were all selected to the 1st Team All-CVC. One team record was set, and one was tied. Ricks broke the record for free throws made with 140. The Lady Blue Devils shot a record 63.6% from the free throw line, and they tied the record for biggest point spread win with 61 twice. They accomplished that feat against LA Southwest, and Modesto JC. Truly a season that had many highs.

HISTORY IN THE MAKINGcontinued

HISTORY IN THE MAKINGcontinued

The 2004-05 season with many highs and lows. The Blue Devils fi nished under .500 for the fi rst time in their history. The Lady Devils for the fi rst time since 1999-2000 fi nished lower than 2nd place in the conference. The Lady Devils defeated Reedley College twice keeping their rivals from winning the conference. They did make the playoffs for the twelth year in a row. Tonesha Jackson lead all scorers with 10.4 points per game, and Amanda Davis was second in the conference in rebounding with a 10.1 per game average. Adwoa McGee was fourth in the conference in 3-pt. shooting percentage with a .333. The Lady Blue Devils returned to the top of the CVC and a top three ranking in 2005-06. Lead by CVC MVP Tonesha Jackson, the Lady Devils won ten of twelve conference games and fi nished 27-10. Tonesha was named to the All-State Team and set a school record for steal with 133. The Lady Devils defeated arch rival Reedley College three times including two times in conference play, and once in the championship game of the Merced Invitational Tournament. They also revenged an earlier conference loss to Modesto JC with a resounding 93-65 win. Look for the Lady Devils to reload for 2006-07. The 2006-07 season saw many highs and lows. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished 16-15 overall, and 9-3 and second in the CVC. Though they fi nished second the Lady Blue Devils missed the playoffs for fi rst time since the fi rst year (1992-03) of the rebirth of women’s basketball here at Merced College. While this was a down point for the season, play by sophomores forward Christie Bryant, and point guard Pamela Bounkhoune would give the fans plenty to cheer about. Forward Christie Bryant lead the team in both scoring (11.8 per game), and rebounding (8.9 rbg). The All-CVC selection averaged 13 points and 10.4 rebounds a game in conference play. Fellow All-CVC selection Point Guard Pamela Bounkhoune lead the team in assists with a 3.3 per game average and was second in scoring with 10.2 points per game. There were also freshmen that gave performances that would leave fans cheering and looking forward to the 2007-08 season with anticipation. Guard Ashley Willison lead the team with 46 three-pointers, and made 81% of her free throws. Guard Rachel Martinez hit on 50% of her three-pointers and 73% of her free throws. Guards Jhinnae Clark and Lakeya Sears both had lots of playing time and were starters throughout the season. So one can see the overall record and the fact the Lady Blue Devils did not make the playoffs, or you can see they fi nished second in the conference, beat Modesto JC twice, Fresno City College once, and saw some very good performances by the team and individual players. The 2008-09 edition of the “Lady Blue Devils” will be continuing its climb back to the top of the Central Valley Conference. The Lady Devils fi nished the 2007-08 season in second place with an 8-2 conference record and 21-13 overall record. They also made a return trip to the State Regional Tournament though losing in the fi rst game. With history on their side, this year’s edition will be looking to rise to the top like seven other teams have done since the 1995-96 season. Gone but not forgotten from last year’s team are 1st Team All-CVC selection Fantasia Newsome and 2nd Team All-CVC selections and guards Lakeya Sears, Rachel Martinez, and Jhinnae Clark. Also not playing this year and redshirting is F Kenyatta Harper who was 1st Team All-CVC, and a three-time All-Tourney selection. She fi nished the season leading in scoring with 13 points a game and rebounds with 11 per game. Though the Lady Devils have lost these players Coach Allen Huddleston seems confi dent with those returning and those new freshmen coming in. The 2008-09 season started out fast for the Lady Blue Devils. The team fi nished fourth in their own tournament, then won the Shasta Tourney, won the consolation championship in the Irvine Tourney, and fi nished third in the very tough Delta Tourney. The Lady Blue Devils came up short in conference play with a second place fi nish to nemisis Fresno City College, and made the Northern California Regional Playoffs losing to Sierra College. The Lady Devils were lead by All-Conference selections Tiara Dunson, Tineka Spencer, and Keyona McKibbens. Dunson lead the team in rebounding (6.5 per game), and was second in scoring with a 9.7 points per game average. Tineka lead the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game, and blocked shots with a 1.0 per game average, and was second in rebounding with a 6.2 rebounds per game average. Keyona lead the team in assists with a 2.2 per game average, and 28 three-pointers. Also contributing heavily were 2nd Team All-Conference selections Tanisha White, and Alyssa Wright. Both White and McKibbens were All-Tournament selections at Shasta with White being named the MVP. The 2009-2010 season was one of few ups, and many downs. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished with their worst record in conference and overall play leaving Coach Huddleston with only three wins away from reaching the 300 win plateau. While there were the lows in the season, the Lady Devils did win the Hartnell tourmanet and Linda Murray (who returns in 2010-11) was named Tourney MVP along with All-Tournament

selection Porsha Grayson (also returning in 2010-11). Coach Huddleston got his 300th win last year and now has 317. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season in second place with an 8-2 conference record, and 20-10 overall record. On the way there, they beat eventual State Final-Four participant Cypress College (Coca Cola Shootout),and regional playoff teams Sacramento City, S.J. Delta, Mission, and Riverside City College. The Lady Devils were lead by sophomores Kenyatta Harper 11.6 pts a game, Linda Murray 12.0 pts per game, and Porsha Grayson’s 11.0 points per game averages. Murray

lead the team and league with a 11.9 rebounds per game average. All three were selected First Team All-CVC. Freshman Kortani Brown was selected Second Team All-CVC averaging 8.5 points in conference play. Grayson was fi rst in freethrow shooting percentage with a 71.4%, third in scoring, second in three-point shooting, and second in assists. A year with many ups, and some downs, but a year which saw the Lady Blue Devils start a rise back to the top. The 2011-12 season was fraught with many peaks and valleys. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season 10-16 oaverall and 4-6 in the CVC (good enough for 4th place). It was a team lead by All-CVC selections Kortani Brown and Tanisha Shaw. Brown lead the team in scoring averaging 12 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.1 steals a game. Her 5.0 rebournds a game were second only to fellow 1st Team All-CVC selection Tanisha Shaw. Shaw was second on the team averaging 9.7 points including the highest fi eldgoal percentage of .494. Tanisha also averaged over 70% shooting freethrows to lead the team. Second team All-CVC selection Kelsey Lamasney averaged 1.1 points over her season average in conference play with a 6.8 per game average. Other high points to the season was a second place fi nish in the Fresno City Tourney, and Consolation Champions in the DeAnza Tourney. Arista Battle was named All-Tourney in Fresno and Rebecca Schonauer made the All-DeAnza Tourney Team. The 2012-13 season was a return back to the winnig tradition of Lady Blue Devil basketball. Though they fi nished in second place to Fresno City College, the Ladies did take care of business beating all other Central Valley teams and made it to the second round of the Northern California Regional playoffs. The Lady Blue Devils were 19-11 overall, and 10-2 in conference play. They were lead by freshm post Sonji Green who averaged over 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Sonji was also a Northern California All-American, and First Team All-Conference selection. Playing the three-four position was freshman Rogenee Russell who could should from both the inside and outside. Rogenee averaged 10.9 points and 7.5 rebouinds a agame. Rogenee and Kelsey Lemasney were both fi rst team all-conference selections. Lemasney came a live in conference play hitting three-pointers in key situations. The Lady Devils won the Santa Ana Tourney, fi nished second in the Delta Tourney, and were consolation champions in the DeAnza Tourney. Green was MVP at the Santa Ana Tourney and along with Rogenee Russell was All-Tournament selection at the Delta Tourney. Green was also selected to the all-touranment team in the DeAnza Tourney. Truly a big step forward from the previous year, the Lady Blue Devils will be looking to build on last year’s accomplishments this year. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished third in the CVC, but was able to do something no other team had done in 23 games....that beat Fresno City College on their home court. In doing so they won the Fresno City College Tournament. That was with only six players suiting up for the game. The Lady Blue Devils with only seven players suited up did something no other CVC team had done in 68 games and that was beat Fresno City College in conference play. The Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season 21-10 overall and 9-3 for third place in the CVC behind FCC and Sequoias. Even though they split with FCC, they lost twice to Sequoias. Post Sonji Green (18.7 points, 11.8 Rebournd per game), Forward Rogenee Russell (10.5 points, 8.5 Rebounds per game), Guard Trinity Washington (8.9 points, 6.0 assists) were selected to the fi rst team All-CVC. Guard Bremai Walker (11.0 points, 2.4 assists per game) was selected to the second team All-CVC. Washington’s 185 assists broke the 1995-96 record set by Karen McGill wtih 150. Rogenee lead the team in freethrow percentage with 74.2%. Green’s 18.7 points per game average fi nished only .2% behind Merced great Marth Manzo’s 18.9. The Lady Blue Devils won the FCC tournament fi nished second at the Mike Gervasoni Tournament, and third at the Coca Cola Classic, and Santa Ana Tourney. They made it to the second round of the Northern California Regiuuonals before losing to San Joaquin Delta. The 2014-15 Lady Blue Devils suffered through one of their worst years fi nishing the season 6-17. With that in mind they played hard, and never gave up in games. They were kead on the boards by sophomore Nitoyra Bone who averaged 8.4 rebebounds a game, and in scoring y TeKerra Borden who averaged a little over 10 points per game. Freshman Mele Tupouata averaged 9.5 points and 6.9 rebounds to lead all freshmen. Borden and Bone were both selected to the 2nd Team All-CVC. The Lady Blue Devils since the season has ended have worked very

hard, and the returning sophomores and incoming frehsmen will make their mark during the 2015-16 basketball season.

The Blue Devils fi nished tied for second place in the CVC with a record of 8-4 and overall record of 16-13 in 2015-16. The Lady Blue

Devils fi nished third in the opening San Joaquin Delta, and Merced College Coca Cola Shootout before fi nishing second in the Fresno City

College tournament. The Lady Blue Devils were lead by post and 1st team All-CVC selection Mele Toupuata. Mele lead the team in scoring

and rebounding with 12.9 points, and 9.8 rebounds a game. She was joined on the 1st team All-CVC by fellow sophomore Jovannah Arrington.

Jovannah was second in scoring with 11 points per game, and lead the team with 35 three-pointers. Her 4 rebounds a game was third on the

team. Freshman point guard Tajaheray McMahon was named to the 2nd team All-CVC and lead the team in steals with 54, and assists with a 2.6

per game average. Her 9 point scoring average was third on the team. The Lady Blue Devils qualifi ed for the State regional playoffs only to lose

in the fi rst round at Sierra College.

HISTORY IN THE MAKINGcontinued

The 2016-17 Lady Blue Devils fi nished the season 15-16 overall and 6-6 in the Central Valley Conference for fourth place. Though they fi nished in

fourth place, they won their last three games to qualify for the Northern California regional playoffs, losing to Sierra College 60-42. The Blue Devils

were lead by 1st Team All-CVC Salihah Bey who averaged 16.8 points per game. Making 2nd Team All-CVC ws Samantha James (12.5 points per

game), and Christina Lotulelei (7.0 points per game). They won consolation championships in the COS and Santa Ana Tourneys. An up and down

season.

The Blue Devils had their greatest year in basketball history fi nishing the season 2nd in the CCCAA State Championships. They fi nished 28-6

overall, and 10-2 for a tie for fi rst place in the Central Valley Conference. Eight records were broken including four individual, and four team

records. The Blue Devils played most of the season with eight players, and sometimes only seven due to injuries. PG Trinity Washingtonn was

named All-State, CVC MVP, and to the All-State Tournament team. She set records for assists in a season with 219 breaking her own record of 185

set in 2012-13. She also broke the eleven year old record of 133 steals set by Tonesha Jackson with 181. In the Blue Devils own tournament she

broke the single game record for assists with 16. Guard Jordan Pierce broke the school record of three point shooting attempts with 230, and is now

the second leading single season three point shooter with 67 (she beat her step-mother Martha Manzo’s 62). Team records set were most fi eldgoal

attempts with 2525 breaking a 15 year old record. The 74.6 points per game broke the 2002-02 record of 72.9. The single season record for most

rebounds in a game was broken by 1 when the Blue Devils had 71 against Porterville. The last record that was set/tied was for most points spread in

a win with 60 against Porterville. As mentioned before Trinity Washington was named CVC MVP, all-State, and All-CCCAA tournament. She lead

the team in in rebounding with 8.6, assists 6.4, and steals with 5.3 a game. Pretty good for a 5-2 guard. PG Tajaheray McMahan lead the team in

scoring with 13.0 points a game and was named to the 1st team All-CVC. G Jordan Pierce was selected to the 1st team All-CVC. She lead the team

in three point attempts and made three pointers. P/G Shea Williams was third in scoring with 12.3 points a game. She was tied with G Shampelle

Kelly in rebounding with 6.1 a game. She lead the team in free throw shooting with a 77.6% average.
