PLOT SYNOPSIS Prospero, the duke of Milan and a powerfulmaster of the arcane arts, was banished fromItaly to an abanded island by his usurpingbrother, Antonio, and Alonso, the king ofNaples. As the play begins, Antonio andAlonso come under Prosperos magic poweras they sail past his island. Prospero seeks touse his magic to make these lords repent andrestore him to his rightful place 5. IS HE AN PROTAGONIST OR ANTAGONISTProspero is the central figure in theplay; he sets up all of the action, andexerts his influence over the eventsin some way. Despite interactingdifferently with different characters,Prospero is the central pivot in theplay, as events turn around him. 6. CONFLICTS DURING THE PLAYPerson vs. society: Prospero explains to Alonso king of Naples he is the rightful duke of MilanPerson vs. nature: he is a magician that has to bend the elements to create the tempest so he is fighting naturePerson vs. person: Ferdinand lover of Miranda is fighting Prospero to prove that he is worthy foe his daughter so he does the tasks set by Prospero 7. GENREThe play is a magic/fantasy romance. Thisromance is between two of the maincharacters Miranda and a lord calledFerdinand. Whist this is going on Prosperois trying to regain his rightful place byoutwitting the lords using magic. He testsFerdinand love for Miranda by sending himon tasks 8. RISING ACTIONProspero creates the tempestcausing his enemies ship to wreckand its passengers to bedispersed about the island 9. CLIMAXAlonso and his party stop to rest andProspero causes a banquet to be set outbefore them. Just as they are about to eatAriel appears in the shape of a harpy andaccuses them of their treachery againstProspero Alonso is overwhelmed withremorse 10. FALLING ACTIONProspero brings Alonso before him andforgives them. Prospero invites Alonso andhis company to stay the night beforeeveryone returns to Italy the next day.Where Prospero will reassume dukedom 11. COMIC OR DRAMATIC RELIEFShakespeares plays often include a comicscene to release the dramatic tension. In theplay the tempest Trinculo is one of the comicrelief characters in the play the tempest.Trinculo is the court jester who is afraid ofthunder and despite Caliban stinking and isalready wearing it. Another comic character inthe play the tempest is Stephano. Stephano isa comic drunk who mistake Caliban for a fourlegged animal. 12. THE DRIVING FORCEThe driving force of the plot is driven by mycharacter Prospero. Prospero duke of Milan anda powerful magician was banished from Italy byhis usurping brother Antonio and Alonso king ofNaples. As the play begins, Antonio and Alonsocome under Prospero magical power as they sailpast his island.
