Komatsu University, founded in 2018 by Komatsu City, benefits from the copious natural assets of the area spanning from Mt. Hakusan to the Sea of Japan, and exploits the heritage of a city of industry, culture, health, education, and international understanding.Komatsu University’s academic structure consists of three Faculties: Production Systems Engineering and Sciences, Health Sciences, and Intercultural Communication. The former two faculties were established through the merger of Komatsu College, inaugurated in 1988, and Komatsu Nursing School, which opened in 1995. These three faculties are organized into four Departments: Production Systems Engineering and Sciences, Nursing, Clinical Engineering, and Intercultural Communication.

Message from President Hiroshi YamamotoAfter graduating from Kanazawa University School of Medicine, I worked at Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Tohoku University, and Kanazawa University as a biochemist studying and teaching health and disease. I received prestigious awards from the Japan Diabetes Society and from the Japan Society of Diabetic Complications, while having served at Kanazawa University as a trustee and as vice president for international affairs. I also served in the university hospital and the alumni association, and assumed my present position as president of Komatsu University in April, 2018. As president, I shall draw upon the experience, skills, and networks developed at the institutions above and enhanced by various academic and social activities involving members of Japanese and overseas societies, trustees at several foundations, editors of various international journals, and selection committees for international and domestic prizes.Komatsu University trains students to become active learners, highly qualified professionals and innovators, who can uncover and solve problems and contribute to the prosperity of any region where they live and work. Such training opens up new vistas for students, their communities, and the world. Research and education at Komatsu University are directed toward information-based science and environment-adapted engineering, establishing the basis for the happiness and health of future generations, and contributing to substantive global and local intercultural exchange.I look forward to the friendly and productive exchange of the intellectual resources of Komatsu University with those of overseas partners in the past, present and future.

Facul ty of Production Systems Engineering and SciencesThe Minamikaga area of Ishikawa Prefecture, where Komatsu is located, is home to more than 100 companies collaborating with a globally famous construction machinery company, and to a cluster of machinery and electronics manufacturers boasting high market shares both in Japan and overseas, known as the “Monozukuri” (manufacturing) group of the Hokuriku region. In our department, we strive to keep pace with the current global trend of creating systems and human resources capable of developing and maintaining a sustainable and environmentally friendly society. In our unique curriculum, building on the latest computer science and loT knowledge, we teach mechanical engineering which is the foundation for craftsmanship, and enhance it with the basic principles of informatics, electronics, and electrical engineering.
Facul ty of Intercul tural CommunicationWith the population and number of children already in decline all over Japan, the number of people coming to live here from abroad is steadily increasing, and so is the number of foreign tourists.Komatsu City is home to “Hokuriku’s Gateway to the Sky”, Komatsu Airport, and also exploits a variety of cultural and historical traditions, including the representative Kabuki play “Kanjincho”.Our university strives to create a global network for cultural exchange through internship and research, in which “global” human resources can thrive.

Facul ty of Health SciencesDepar tment of Clinical Engineering Komatsu University is the first public clinical engineering university in Japan. Our students learn to support safe and precise medicine through advanced medical equipment, having acquired the basic knowledge, adaptability, medical ethics, and ability to work as part of a team to support doctors while improving local medicine. We also strive to create new professors and researchers of clinical engineering to help with the further development of medical technology.
Facul ty of Health SciencesDepar tment of NursingKomatsu University ranks tenth among city-managed nursing universities in Japan, and is one of only ten with a minimum number of 40-50 students per course. As Japan’s population continues to age, nursing specialists will be needed not only in hospitals but in a number of medical and care facilities throughout the country, to allow the elderly to live safe and fulfilling lives in the places they are used to. In our department, we instruct students about health regeneration, disease prevention, health maintenance, and a whole array of important details of nursing, so as to help people live happy and meaningful lives using local medical facilities.
