Central University of Karnataka (CUK) is a young institution with the spirit of climbing the

ladder of academic excellence and social relevance. For the past six years we have demonstrated

this spirit through our acts and deeds. The university has seen a significant growth in

infrastructure, academic pursuits and intellectual contribution, marking its existence on the

national canvas. The achievement is made possible by efforts of committed faculty, students and

other stakeholders.

The Central University of Karnataka is situated in a geographically as well as culturally diverse

place „Kalaburagi‟. Historically, it is the land of intellectuals and leaders of revolution. This

inspires us to retain the spirit of land and make the university a global cradle of knowledge;

covering the fields of Humanities, Arts, Commerce, Management, Technology and Science. At

CUK we have special emphasis on knowledge dissemination, creation and social outreach.

The University has been taking appropriate initiatives to address the water scarcity and

sustainable energy through implementation of smart solutions like rain water harvesting, solar

power generation and efficient resource management. Today, the campus is on its way to

become a self sustained habitat. At present there are nineteen departments under eight schools.

From the academic year 2016-2017 we plan to start few new departments in Folkloristic &

Tribal studies, Linguistics and History.

I am happy to announce that the CUK is the part of CUCET 2016 consortium for admissions in

the various programs for ensuing academic year.

In the era of fast paced knowledge based society, the University is endeavouring to create skilled,

effective and socially committed manpower. We seek all the aspirants to contribute to this vision

and I welcome them to this vibrant place of knowledge creation and learning.

7.ABOUT HYDERABAD KARNATAKA REGION AND KALABURAGI

Central University of Karnataka, Kalaburagi is situated in Kalaburgai previously known as Gulbarga, in

Hyderabad Karnataka region. The region is vibrant in its nature with multilingual, multicultural structure. The

region has given birth to acclaimed academicians, literary personalities, religious leaders and philosophers. The

region housed philosophical centers, educational centers, epistemological works, social movements, great

dynasties, incredible folk traditions in verbal and non-verbal art forms and industries. One of the oldest human

settlements in Asia is found at Isampur of Surpur taluka. Remains from the Stone Age are seen in and around the

areas of Maski, Hire Benakal, and Balichakra etc.

The history of this region is rich in its contribution to literature. Many Vachanakaras, good number of

Kirtanakaras and Tatvapadakaras hail from this region. There are great scholarly works Allama’s vacanas work which

made a tradition of epistemological works in the region. There are also many religious and philosophical centres

like Sannati, Kanagana Halli, Koppala, Manyakheta (Capital of rasthrakoota kingdom), Kalyana ( Capital of Chalukya

kingdom), Bidar, Savalagi, Tintini, Mudgal in the region.

The region has seen many social movements like Vachana movement, Keertana movement and Sufi movement. Hyderabad Karnataka has been home to many great dynasties like Rashtrakuta, KalyaniChalukya, Vijayanagar, Bahumani, Barid Shahi, Surapur Dore etc. This marvellous history has also led to many incredible folk literatures both in verbal and non-verbal ways. The ancient sculptures at Hampi, Shiravala, Evuru, Kalagi, Bidar, Kalyana, Kalaburagi, Itagi etc are worth mentioning. However modern technology has not left this region untouched.

It is important to note that A stone inscription discovered at Maski in Raichur district changed whole perception of understanding the history of India, for it being the first of its kind inscription found in the name of `Devanampriya', Asoka the Great. This clearly established that the Maruyan kingdom had spread even to the far south to the Tungabhadra belt. Sannati was one of the most prominent and vibrant Buddhist centers as Archeological Survey of India excavations there have already established. Nagavi Ghatika in Chittapur taluk of Kalaburagi district was the most sought after centers of higher learning attracting students and scholars from different parts in the medieval period. It enjoyed the patronage of Vikramaditya-VI, one of the mightiest emperors of the world of his times. This ghatika, equivalent to today's university, had a well-established library managed by a qualified librarian, according to an inscription found here.

Maha Veeracharya (815-878), was one of the ancient mathematicians of India in the court of Rashtrakuta emperor Amoghavarsha at Malkhed near Kalaburagi. His marvelous mathematical treatise `Ganitasara Sangraha', a mathematics book in Sanskrit poetry, is a landmark work found relevant even today, in several aspects of mathematics. `Kavirajamraga', the first extant Kannada literary work was produced by Srivijaya around 850 AD during the period of Amoghavarsha alias Nrupatunga of the Rashrakutas. The book is about the theory of literature particularly poetry, has played a vital role in according classical language status to Kannada. Vijnaneshwara, a celebrated jurisprudentialist , in the court of Vikramadiya-VI, the Kalyani Chalukyan emperor, wrote the magnum opus `Mitakshara', commentary to the Yajnavlkya Smriti, in the 11th century. Hailing from Martur near Kalaburagi, Vijnaneshwara's Mitakshara became corner stone of the Indian legal system and it remained the sole system of justice throughout India except Bengal and Assam from 12th century till India attained independence. Malkhed on the banks of river Kagina near Kalaburagi is a holy place for Brahmins for its hosts the vrindavana of the eminent vedantic scholar of unparalleled caliber Sri Jayateertha (1365-88), famous by the epithet Tikacharya for enriching the Dwaitha Vedanta philosophy as propounded by Sri Madhwacharya.

Khwaja Bande Navaj (1321-1422) was a Persian sufi saint settled in Gulbarga on the invitation of Bahman king Feroz Shah and was a pioneer in Urdu literature. His work `Me Rajul Askini' considered to be the first prose work ever to be written in Urdu. Thanks to his Dargah, Gulbarga has become a major pilgrim centre for Muslims all over India and even abroad.

There are ample number of industries and businesses flourishing in the field of Gold, Electrical, cotton, cement, rice, Tore daal, stone etc. Dams like Krishna (Basavasagara) and Tungabhadra (Munirabad) and several minor dams have been constructed across many rivers like Krishna, Tungabhadra, Bhima etc which supply water within and outside the state. The region is a land of number of languages, tribes and cultures.

Kalaburagi district is one of the three districts that were transferred from Hyderabad State to Karnataka state at the time of re-organization of the state in 1956. The district is one among the 29 districts of Karnataka State. It is located in the North-East part of the state and lies between North latitude 17010" and 17045" and between east longitude 76010"and 77045". The District is a biggest district in the state covering 8.49% of the area and 5.9 present of population of the state. Kadaganchi is a village in Aland taluk, Kalaburagi district in the Indian state of Karnataka. DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS

The Department of Linguistics at the Central University of Karnataka aims to preserve the linguistic diversity of

the country by educating the younger generation about serious issues concerning present situation of languages in

India. India has the oldest and arguably, the richest tradition of linguistic study in the world. The rich multilingual

situation of India provides both challenges and opportunities for a well-designed research and training program in

Linguistics. The great history, mutual relationship between language families for thousands of years in India

provides ample scope to research. The greater tradition of language studies of different languages in India too

needs attention. Justification for a systematic study of language in India has not only intellectual, but also

pragmatic one in terms of urgent regional, state, and national priorities. India faces many challenges in language

education, both in mother tongue and second language teaching. Integration of the historically underprivileged

and marginalized classes and castes into the educational mainstream is a national priority and language issues are a

major stumbling block. Many minority and tribal languages await description, documentation and development.

The use of India languages as medium of higher education remains an unfulfilled goal, especially, in the sciences.

Developments in technology, such as the use of regional language in texting, emails, and the internet, call for

precise descriptions of languages and adoption in natural language processing. India needs trained people in

different applied fields to meet the present and future need of the society. The linguistics programme and courses

are to make students aware of the issues and to train them to work in different areas related.

ABOUT THE M.Sc PROGRAM

The Department of Mathematics offers a 4 semester (2 year) Master‟s degree program to prepare students

for a career in teaching and research. The entire curriculum is designed to prepare a student to enter a research

career in multi-disciplinary areas of science and technology in Research Organizations and Industry. The students

could also take up a teaching career specially after acquiring a Ph.D. degree. Education at CUK is built with

emphasis on developing scientific and innovative spirit, instilling professional ethics and spirit of service to the

society at large.

THRUST AREAS OF RESEARCH:

Non-Newtonian Fluids: Most of the studies were confined to a Newtonian fluid, but in many of the real fluids like blood flow, molten polymers, slurries etc., the shear behaviour cannot be characterized by the Newtonian relationship. Hence, the researchers have proposed diverse non-Newtonian fluid theories to explain the deviation in the behaviour of real fluids compared with that of Newtonian fluids. Important field where these non-Newtonian fluids have applications includes squeezing and lubrication, bio-fluid mechanics, magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows and synthesis and plasticity of chemical compounds. Presently, the department is focussing on thermodynamic second law analysis for non-Newtonian fluids like Jeffrey fluid, micropolar fluid etc. Flow Visualization: An extensive flow visualization study is conducted that employs a novel heat and mass flow visualization technique based on the heatline and massline concept, in addition to the velocity vector, velocity contours, isotherms and concentration contours. The main use of heatlines and masslines is to find the flow intensity in the region which is not observed in other contours such as velocity, temperature and concentration. The heatlines and masslines are the adequate tools for visualization and analysis of the heat and mass transfer process, giving well defined corridors where energy and mass transfer occurs from the hot wall towards the cold wall. Further, we are interested to observe the flow visualization for nano-fluids.
