Recorded in Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in August 2013, Forever Young is even more warm, lyrical and joyous than its predecessors and clearly shows his development as a writer of buoyantly melodic material. One of the most exceptional musicians to have emerged from Norway in the past decade, Jacob Young is a bandleader, improviser and jazz composer whose sensibilities have been shaped both by the history of the music as it has unfolded in the North and by his deep knowledge of the American jazz tradition, studied also at first hand. Born in Lillehammer in 1970, Young was introduced to jazz by his American father, taking up the guitar at the age of 12. After studying music at the University of Oslo, he received a scholarship to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan. “At the New School I played in Jim Hall’s ensemble and took guitar lessons from him. Those were decisive experiences and I was really lucky to have had that chance. Jim Hall has been a guiding inspiration for my playing.” There were also studies with John Abercrombie: “He taught me that there are hard and fast rules, for everyone, when playing music, but you can break the rules.” Producer Manfred Eicher first heard Young playing live with old school friend Trygve Seim’s group at the Blå Club in Oslo in the late 1990s. Seim, himself a leading ECM recording artist, is reunited with Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz with whom he memorably performed on drummer Manu Katché’s album Playground. JAZZ/WORLD NEW RELEASE - 28/4/2014

Dino Saluzzi Group El Valle de la Infancia

3770032 602537700325 CD ECM £9.49 JAZZ/WORLD El Valle de la Infancia finds the great bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi at the top of his form on an achingly beautiful album with his ‘family’ musicians - his brother, reeds player Felix ‘Cuchara’ Saluzzi, his guitarist son José Maria Saluzzi, and Felix’s son Matias Saluzzi on bass - and with friends, guitarist Colacho Brizuela and percussionist Quintino Cinalli. Recorded in Buenos Aires, their enjoyment in making music together is palpable. This is Argentinian popular music at its most potent.

Dino Saluzzi returns to his roots, to retrieve, unchanged yet renewed, the music of his homeland in its essential brilliance. As says Leopoldo ‘Teuco’ Castilla in his liner notes: “He goes in search of melody and brings it to life; when he sings, the music feels boundless, more than music, a true evocation of people and place. The bandoneon breathes the air of burning sugar cane in the Siancas valley in Salta, Argentina; and the saxophone is the deepest cry.”

“The music captures the natural world of its origins: North Argentina, ablaze with mourning, despairing with joy. Nature, in spirit and in its most ethereal form, brought to life in the hands of this creator. And also the prayers offered up to those Virgins of the high mountains, the Virgin of Urcupiña amongst others, by the people of that region and their Bolivian neighbours. The work is alive with different genres: from dances such as zamba to carnavalito to chacarera. Here, too, is the music of Buenos Aires. Saluzzi spins the hidden web secretly beating in the tango, delves deep into the milonga, wounded yet strong, intrinsic yet expressive.”

The group last appeared on ECM on the 2006 recording, Juan Condori (9859237). Personnel: Dino Saluzzi (bandoneon), José Maria Saluzzi (guitar, requinto guitar), Colacho Brizuela (guitar), Felix ‘Cuchara’ Saluzzi (tenor saxophone, clarinet), Matias Saluzzi (bass guitar, double bass), Quintino Cinalli (drums, percussion) Tracks: 1. JAZZ/CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 28/4/2014

Ketil Bjornstad

Sunrise - A Cantata on Texts By Edvard Munch

3745479 602537454792 CD ECM £9.49 JAZZ/CLASSICAL Sunrise, commissioned by the Nordstrand Musikkselskap Choir for their 70th anniversary in 2011, sets the words of the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch in a cantata for female vocalist and chorus (here Kari Bremnes and the Oslo Chamber Choir) with an instrumental group that includes the composer himself, jazz pianist Ketil Bjørnstad.

Ketil Bjørnstad says: “Edvard Munch always wrote something about his motifs before painting them. These were often short prose texts describing the subject matter he envisioned for the picture. His prose style was heavily influenced by August Strindberg and the Norwegian anarchist and writer Hans Jæger. He produced modern, often crudely crafted pieces of writing that had a sketch-like quality, but that he would repeatedly re-edit. The texts can be compared to his paintings in their power and intensity. Munch wanted to be a writer as well as a painter. He worked on several ideas for novels, and wrote a number of short stories.” Texts from different periods in Munch’s life have been used in Sunrise. They all portray existentialist dilemmas: surviving or being destroyed, believing or observing.

Ketil Bjørnstad, pianist, composer, improviser... and also novelist, poet and essayist, was described by The Guardian as “a cultural prodigy”. Prolific in his multi-discipline activities, he has released more than 50 albums and published 40 books. Bjørnstad has been an ECM recording artist since 1993 when his album Water Stories was issued. Other ECM recordings include The Sea, The River, The Sea II, Epigraphs, Life In Leipzig, The Light - Songs of Love and Fear, Remembrance, Night Song, Vinding’s Music and La notte. Among his best-known books internationally is his acclaimed 1993 fictionalised biography of Edvard Munch. Personnel: Ketil Bjørnstad (piano), Kari Bremnes (vocal), Aage Kvalbein (cello), Matias Bjørnstad (alto saxophone), Bjørn Kjellemyr (bass), Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen (percussion), Oslo Chamber Choir, Egil Fossum (conductor) Tracks: 1. You 'Orrible Lot - Music & Memories of the National Service Years

GLMY70 5060088441169 CD MEMORY LANE £4.00 EASY LISTENING Music played an enormous role in National Service and this CD celebrates those unique 15 years of conscription. Featuring 26 memorable songs that were written about - and formed the soundtrack to - National Service and barrack room life. Full of good humour, irony, fun and nostalgia ‘You ‘Orrible Lot’ perfectly conveys the unforgettable experience with fondness.... albeit occasionally bitter-sweet. National Service, as peacetime conscription, was formalised by the National Service Act 1948. From January 1st 1949, healthy males aged 17 to 21 were expected to serve in the armed forces for 18 months, and remain on the reserve list for four years. Sharing the danger of the Regulars, they fought the country’s enemies and defended its interests across the globe. Drill, strict regimes, discipline and obedience were - literally - the order of every day, yet many of those that were conscripted were grateful for gaining a maturity that may have otherwise eluded them, learning the value of friendship and comradeship and ultimately became more resilient and better organised. Tracks: Elvis Presley - GI Blues / The Goons - Major Bloodnok's Rock'n'Roll Call / Michael Medwin, Bernard Bresslaw, Alfie Bass & Leslie Fyson - The Army Game / Michael Medwin, Bernard Bresslaw, Alfie Bass & Leslie Fyson - What We Do In The Army / Chris Barber's Jazz Band - Bugle Call Rag / Johnny and The Hurricanes - Reveille Rock / Anthony Newley - Idle On Parade / Anthony Newley - Idle Rock-A-Boogie / Vaughn Monroe - Sound Off! / Frank Sinatra - Saturday Night (Is The Loneliest Night Of The Week) / Frank Chacksfield and his Orchestra - Waltzing Bugle Boy / The Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy / Johnny Mercer - GI Jive / Anne Shelton - Lay Down Your Arms / George Formby - Cookhouse Serenade / Arthur Askey - Kiss Me Goodnight, Sergeant-Major / Ronald Brittain - RSM Brittain On Parade / The RAOC Blue Rockets Dance Orchestra - Ma, I Miss Your Apple Pie / Irving Berlin - This Is The Army, Mr Jones / Jack White and his Band - In The Quartermaster's Stores / George Formby - Bless 'Em All / Fred Emney & Leslie Henson - We're In The Army Now / Peter Dawson - Boots / George Formby - Our Sergeant Major / Peter Dawson - When The Sergeant-Major's On Parade / Norman Long - Our Nice Kind Sergeant-Major

HUMOUR RE-PROMOTION - AVAILABLE NOW!

Sigrid Moldestad Brevet til kjaerleiken

HCD7290 7033662072903 CD HEILO £7.99 FOLK ‘Brevet til Kjaerleiken’ (‘Letter to Love’) is Sigrid Moldestad’s fourth solo album and a tribute to Norwegian poet and children’s writer, Jan-Magnus Bruheim on the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1914. With original music set to the text of Jan-Magnus Bruheim’s poems, Sigrid Moldestad has created a challenging and beautiful album that is both rhythmically driving and at times full of melancholy longing. Playing Hardanger fiddle and singing, Sigrid is backed by four incredible musicians on acoustic instruments - fiddles, guitars, Jews harp, langeleik (zither like instrument), harmonium, and drums. What could be termed as a stylistic intersection between folk, pop and roots music, ‘Brevet til kjaerleiken’ is a work of art that transcends stereotypical folk themes and has wide audience appeal. The title of the album is taken from his book of poetic prose about love in all of its manifestations. Sigrid Moldestad is from the same county as Jan-Magnus Bruheim and most of the album was recorded in the old school house by the sea in Bremanger where he lived. Tracks: Å kjæraste (Bøn for henne) / Du i meg / Tri rosor / Tungt glir båten / Vegen / Brevet / Når vi møtest / Haustkveld ved havet / Den annsame / Kva batar det?

Monty Alexander

Harlem-Kingston Express Vol 2: The River Rolls On

233828 885150338285 CD MOTEMA £7.99 JAZZ The follow-up to pianist Monty Alexander’s Grammy nominated ‘Harlem-Kingston Express’. The project is the culmination of his career spent mixing the music of his native Jamaica with American musical idioms. The Wall Street Journal has said that, “Alexander’s blend of jazz and reggae makes for an outrageously good time.” The album includes Alexander’s “Love Notes,” featuring his friends George Benson, Ramsey Lewis and Joe Sample. Alongside his band they perform a mix of Alexander originals (which are themselves steeped in both Caribbean music and American jazz and R&B) and interpretations of classics, from the soul hits “People Make the World Go Round” and “What’s Going On” to Jimmy Cliff’s reggae landmark “The Harder They Come.” Other tracks include a live version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” and the Jamaican folk Song “Linstead Market”. In a career spanning five decades, Monty Alexander has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, among others. Oran Etkin Gathering Light

233833 885150338339 CD MOTEMA £7.99 JAZZ Oran Etkin’s brilliant album, ‘Gathering Light’, is inspired by tours in Indonesia, China, Japan, Israel and Europe. Featuring Oran Etkin on bass clarinet, Ben Allison on bass, Nasheet Waits on drums, Lionel Loueke on guitar/vocals and Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, the music interweaves melodies and rhythms from these regions with Etkin’s fresh compositions. On ‘Gathering Light’ this “composer of eminent individuality”, as Yusef Lateef named him, digs deep, taking inspiration from the depths of the jazz tradition that he grew up with, the New Orleans roots that inspired him to play, and ancient sources from around the world, to create adventurous music that pushes the art form in new directions. From the opening bass clarinet notes of “Gambang Suling” (Etkin‘s homage to Indonesian musicians who taught him this folk song), to the tender closing notes of “When It‘s Sleepy Time Down South”, this adventurous, intrepid artist reveals a depth of musicianship, character, and gratitude that is hugely appealing. Tracks: Gambang Suling / Taxi Dance / Shirim Ad Kan / Gratitude / Takeda / All I Really Want To Do Is Dance! / Scattering Light / Tony's Dance / Der Gasn Nign / Distant Sounds Of Change / Guangzhou Taxi / When It's Sleepy Time Down South

Howard Riley To Be Continued

SLAMCD293 5028386029328 CD SLAM PRODUCTIONS £7.99 JAZZ ‘To Be Continued’ is a solo piano recording by UK jazz pianist and composer Howard Riley, who has been acclaimed by The Guardian for his “powerful technique and profound knowledge of both classical and jazz music.” Among his own compositions and improvisations he includes one song from ‘The Great American Songbook’ - Jerome Kern’s “The Folks Who Live on The Hill”. Howard Riley gives an insight into the album in the sleeve notes “This recording is my first in a studio for three years. The Lithuanian label NoBusiness has released live recordings during that period, so when SLAM suggested a studio date I was happy to accept. Conceptually I decided to simply let the recording reflect my current musical situation, which in turn led me to the album title. In recent years specific projects have become fashionable, but for me the most rewarding project has always been the long-term development of musical identity.” Personnel: Howard Riley (piano) Tracks: To Be Continued / East West / Just Maybe / Two Part Intention / The Folks Who Live on the Hill / Solving the Problem / Descending Thoughts / Haunted / One More Thin

Bobby Avey Authority Melts From Me

WR4650 0609613793967 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS £7.99 JAZZ ‘Authority Melts from Me’ is the fascinating album from Bobby Avey, praised by the New Yorker magazine as “a young pianist of invention and refinement.” It pays homage to the Haitian Revolution and features the immense talents of saxophonist Miguel Zenon and guitarist Ben Monder. Winner of the 2011 Thelonious Monk Competition for composition, Avey also received the 2011 “New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development Grant” from Chamber Music America. This enabled Avey to travel to Haiti to immerse himself in the music and rhythms of Vodou drumming ensembles from Port au Prince and the small village of Soukri. In Soukri, Avey attended and documented the ensemble’s Vodou Ceremony and following a period of careful transcription and analysis, he composed an hour-long suite utilising the rhythms and concepts found in these two drumming ensembles. Personnel: Bobby Avey (piano), Miguel Zenon (alto saxophone), Ben Monder (guitar), Thomson Kneeland double bass), Jordan Perlson (drums) Tracks: Kalfou / Piano Interlude / Louverture / Drum Interlude / Cost Reviews confirmed in The Guardian, Financial Times, Independent on Sunday, The Irish Times, Metro, Jazzwise, Jazz Journal, MOJO, BBC Music Magazine, Record Collector, Hi Fi News + Jazz UK Airplay: BBC Radio 3 (Jazz on 3 + Jazz Line Up) + BBC Radio 2 Jamie Cullum Additional airplay on Jazz FM: Chris Philips, Mike Chadwick & Sarah Ward

Bucky Pizzarelli Trio Three For All

JD362 090368036261 CD CHESKY £8.49 JAZZ On ‘Three for All’ Bucky Pizzarelli leads a guitar trio, which also includes his son John and Ed Laub. Without sacrificing his own voice, Bucky lovingly honours his forebears and contemporaries, as well as “the kids”, including his own. With the exception of the title track, all of these songs are standards - a description that fails to capture the vitality of these performances. It's especially gratifying to hear a jazz album that sounds like an album - a cohesive succession of performances - thoughtfully crafted, but swinging like crazy, as you'll discover. The selections are centred largely at the peak of the American Popular Songbook. They include Broadway’s “All the Things You Are”, from a 1939 Jerome Kern flop, and “Body and Soul”, from a 1930 hit. Bucky sails gloriously through Johnny Green’s melody before turning it over to John, with the last word going to his father - all the while with smart, sensitive support from Ed. The roles are reversed on “Avalon”, a popular song introduced by Al Jolson in 1920. Personnel: Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Ed Laub (guitar) Tracks: All the Things You Are / Body and Soul / Avalon / Snowfall / Stompin' at the Savoy / If I Had You / Stage Fright / It's Been a Long, Long Time/Don't Take Your Love From Me / Undecided / In the Dark / I'm Confessin' / Three For All / I Got Rhythm

HUBROCD2532 7033662025329 CD HUBRO £7.99 JAZZ The improvisational trio 1982 consists of fiddler Nils Økland and organist Sigbjørn Apeland (who have recorded together for ECM) alongside drummer Øyvind Skarbø. The trio has already released three critically acclaimed albums. On ‘A/B’ they have invited wind players including Fredrik Ljungkvist (Atomic), Erik Johannessen (Jaga Jazzist) and trumpeter/composer/conductor Stian Omenås to participate in an unusual collaboration. The album is built up with the classic LP structure of an A side and a B side, with a long piece, “18:16”, filling the entire A side. This piece clearly stands out as the most distinctive in 1982’s discography up to now. Taking his point of departure in improvisations recorded by the trio, trumpeter and composer Stian Omenås has “expanded on” the idiom and has composed and arranged music for a wind sextet that has been layered on top of the original improvisation. On the B side we once again hear 1982 in the form of a trio, with several new ideas that serve to enlarge the 1982 universe. Sigbjørn plays piano on one track, and Nils Økland sings. “Our goal is to continue to develop things further, and I feel that we’re managing to do just that,” says Skarbø. The musicians of 1982 are improvisers to their very marrow, and everyone who has seen and heard them in concert knows that they love to surprise their audiences. Tracks: 18:16 / 02:01 / 03:51 / 03:12 / 01:08 / 05:00

POP/ELECTRONIC NEW RELEASE - 5/5/2014

ROCK NEW RELEASE - 28/4/2014

Budding Rose Where Were Ye All?

GRCD4424 7033662044245 CD GRAPPA £7.99 POP/ELECTRONIC Ten years in the making, ‘Where Were Ye All’ is the result of a commission given to Norwegian musician Terj Johannesen to compose the score for a theatrical production about the lives and writings of British sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, who wrote such literary classics as ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘Jane’ Eyre and ‘Villette’. The sisters were also prolific poets and it was from this side of their work that Johannesen found so fascinating and inspiring. The results of that inspiration are now heard on this CD featuring 11 of the Brontë’s poems set to Johannesen’s original and imaginative music. Marked by stark musical contrasts, nineteenth-century poems and modern orchestral pop-electronica with gentle, sensitive passages that flow into beautiful harmonies played on acoustic instruments, this album is content rich, emotionally catchy and art-pop at its best. The CD liner notes are by leading folk/world music broadcaster and journalist Fiona Talkington (BBC Radio 3). Tracks: Trø ikkje inn i stilla (støkk ikkje) / Budding Rose / Where Were Ye All? / Passion / She Dried Her Tears / The Night Is Darkening / Awaking / True To Myself / Fall Leaves / Tell Me / Lines Composed in a Wood on a Windy Day / Happiest When Most Away Plans are in progress to tour ‘Where Were Ye All’ in the UK this coming autumn with support from the Norwegian Cultural Office.
