Extended CE Mark brings new treatment option to patients in the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland.

Oraya Therapeutics has announced that the Oraya IRay® Radiotherapy system has received a CE Mark extension for the treatment of choroidal metastases, a cancer in the eye, originating most commonly from primary sites in the breast or lung. This new indication of use expands upon Oraya’s prior approval for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and may offer patients in the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland a new treatment option for a vision-threatening condition.

Unlike ocular melanomas, choroidal metastases can grow quickly and may require prompt treatment to prevent vision loss. While chemotherapy may be used, radiation therapy is typically the preferred treatment using either plaque brachytherapy or external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), invasive procedures requiring therapy regimens conducted over days or weeks.

Oraya’s IRay Radiotherapy system utilises a robotically positioned low-energy x-ray source to enable the delivery of a precise dose of radiation to the back of the eye in a 15-20 minute non-invasive procedure. The

stereotactic radiation delivery and the use of low energy x-rays offer the potential for treatment of choroidal metastases without surgery and the related patient burden of multiple treatment sessions.

“The precision and simplicity enabled by the Oraya technology offer potential advantages compared to existing alternatives,” said Prof Bornfeld, Professor in Ophthalmology and head of the department for posterior segment diseases at the University of Essen, Germany. “There is real opportunity to evolve this technology further, providing a meaningful addition to our clinical treatments.”

The Oraya IRay Radiotherapy system received CE certification for the treatment of wet AMD in March 2010. Oraya Therapy is now available at 11 treatment centres located in Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and with an equal number in the active planning pipeline.

The introduction of SPECTRALIS OCT2 as the platform for launching non-invasive OCT angiography is another example of the outstanding SPECTRALIS value proposition to extend the life and function of the equipment, making new and meaningful technological developments available to existing customers.

SPECTRALIS OCT2 module combines a 70 kHz A-scan rate with Heidelberg Engineering’s proprietary TruTrack high-speed active eye tracking, to provide unmatched image quality. The OCT2 module is now available as an option for the upgradeable SPECTRALIS family of products.

Spectralis OCT angiography performs sequential OCT cross-sectional scans to detect motion of scattering particles such as erythrocytes within the eye’s vasculature. Key for this technology are high-resolution OCT scans, and the ability to repeatedly measure the same location of the retina. Experience the speed of Spectralis OCT2 on stand A at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Doubledyne - unique ILM and ERM staining

Kestrel is pleased to launch Doubledyne from Kemin Pharma, to the UK ophthalmic market. A unique lutein based dye for effective visualisation of the ILM and/or ERM during vitreoretinal procedures in a single syringe or vial. Lutein acts as a natural blocker of blue light therefore protecting the retina and surrounding tissues during surgery. Doubledyne is a highly dense liquid that descends onto the affected target membranes in a controlled and predictable manner and is easily removed after a short staining period.

Boasting a 60° field in a single exposure and a wide-field of up to 110°, the Eidon is the first confocal system on the market to combine the advantages of scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) with the fidelity of true colour confocal imaging.

The Eidon offers fully-automated assessment (with manual override) and boasts

easy-to-use tablet and toggler controls, all in a compact footprint. It provides red-free, infrared red and true colour imaging. Red-free

imaging is useful to enhance visibility of the retinal nerve fibre layer. Infrared provides information corresponding to deeper layers (choroid) and true colour is obtained using white illumination.

Thanks to its confocal white light technology, the Eidon provides high-resolution and contrast capabilities to image the fundus through cataracts and media opacities, with no optic disc bleaching. It provides excellent visualisation of detail, even with a pupil size of 2.5mm.

With all the excitement surrounding laser-assisted cataract surgery (LACS), it was only a matter of time before IOL technologies that take advantage of the laser’s perfect capsulotomy came to market. Detlef Holland, MD, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at the Augenklinik Bellevue in Kiel, Germany is the first surgeon to use the FEMTIS laser lens (Oculentis), an IOL with a special haptic system that allows the lens to clamp into the capsulorrhexis.

“At 10 month follow-up, this IOL remains perfectly centred and stable in the capsular bag,” says Mr Holland after implanting FEMTIS IOL in 30 eyes. There are no intraoperative complications, capsulorrhexis tears, or postoperative complications and there have not been any problems with iris pigmentation and posterior capsular opacification, no signs of elevated intraocular pressure, and no cases of iris capture, continues Mr Holland. Lastly, the lens has been centred and the haptics in position in all 30 cases.

ZEISS Launches NEW HFA3 – with Liquid Lens Technology

For more than 30 years, the Humphrey® Field Analyzer (HFA™) has been the accepted standard of care in glaucoma diagnostics and management. The new HFA3 from ZEISS is designed to accelerate clinic workflow while delivering the same gold-standard testing strategies and test patterns.

The HFA3 is the first perimeter to introduce patented Liquid Lens technology, which saves time, simplifies set-up and reduces the possibility of human error in trial lens correction. In perimetry, a trial lens provides the refractive correction needed so each patient can see clearly during the test. The Liquid Trial Lens™ replaces the old manual process, automatically delivering the appropriate refractive correction using measurement information entered into the instrument.

The new model provides a streamlined and faster workflow with an array of features designed to: • Improve confidence in test results with RelEYE™,

which allows doctors to instantly review the patient’s eye position, at any stimulus point. It may reveal common testing problems, such as droopy lids (ptosis) or misalignment of the eye relative to the trial lens holder.

• Save time with an intuitive new SmartTouch™ interface, which reduces the number of steps required for the technician to start a perimetry exam. Faster gaze tracking also provides information that helps doctors assess the reliability of test results. The gaze tracker on the HFA3 provides faster initialisation and works on a wider spectrum of patients, compared to earlier models of HFA.

• Make test administration simpler, with an easy-to-use kinetic graphical user interface and full 180-degree field of view.

The HFA3 upholds the Humphrey tradition of accuracy: test results on the new platform are equal to and interchangeable with results from prior generations of the HFA, providing continuity and certainty in the ongoing care of patients.

Eaglet Eye - Eye Surface Profiler (ESP) exclusively from Carleton Optical

The Eye Surface Profiler (ESP) is a newly developed cornea and sclera topographer that can measure up to 20mm of the anterior surface of the eye. It is an evolution of a wide-field height eye topographer. To date, there is no technology that would

provide matching coverage to the ESP.ESP has a potential to become an optometry clinical tool that could substitute the

currently used videokeratoscopes and provide a new quality in those applications in which information on corneoscleral topography is of essence.

Eye surface profilometry achieves similar levels of accuracy used in keratoscopy based instruments with an unprecedented extension of the measuring coverage.

AlaHeavy brings new possibilities Altomed is delighted to launch AlaHeavy heavy silicone oil in the UK.

AlaHeavy, made by Alamedics Germany, is an oil which has been manufactured to be denser than water, however it is not a ‘mixture’. AlaHeavy is not oil with added-in density-enhancing ingredients such as hydrocarbons. There is no chance of separation during storage

and a much lower risk emulsification, or an inflammatory reaction within the eye.Plus, AlaHeavy can deliver two bonus advantages. Higher density, but lower

viscosity than similar products currently on the market. Contact us for a sample.
