Reflection In the course of these five weeks since the resurrection of Jesus, we have seen a slow but steady growth of the community of believers. First, it was the twelve with few women and a handful of disciples. In following the readings, we have heard how their numbers kept adding up, as many as three thousand as we heard last weekend. The first noticeable bond among them was love for each other to the point of sharing whatever they had. We have also heard (in daily readings) the challenges they faced especially the persecution and martyrdom of St. Stephen which led to the dispersal of the group as they ran for their lives. What Tertullian said in the 14th century is so true: the blood of martyrs is the seed of the church. Once outside the confines of Jerusalem, they always found themselves in synagogues – where Jews that were not born in Palestine gather. These then were the first converts and they were called Hellenists. Experiencing diversity among their group became the first challenge and distraction. The fear of death as they faced persecution and the challenge of belonging to one ‘family’ where each person came from a different background were few of the problems of the nascent church. Reflecting on that today reminds us that we are not alone. At no point in the long history of the Church has Jesus told us that His way is an easy way. No. His way is the way of the cross. But whether it was then or today, it is only human for us to worry when we are faced with problems in life. And when that is the case, it is Jesus’ intention that we look up to him as our hope. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God, have faith also in me...” (Gospel) Faith in Jesus is our victory over the challenges and struggles of life. To believe in him, we need to know him and he tells us today who he is: the way, the truth and the life. Jesus is the way to be followed, the truth to be said and the life to be lived. But not everybody accepts or believes in him, but “whoever believes… shall not be put to shame.” (2nd reading) He first chose us: “You are ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own… ” and so he invites us to ‘come to him, a living stone’ that was rejected by human beings. This invitation is an individual one as he chooses us for a particular purpose and mission. The mission is the same for all of us in this ‘family’. But he has given each of us a uniqueness that we must bring into building up this spiritual house. That was what the apostles did today in the first reading (creation of the office of deacons) so that in the division of labor, the ‘seven’ could use their own talents while distractions were avoided. Today is Mother’s Day for instance. While we wish all women happy mother’s day, we celebrate the role of mothers; not just mothers but women in general. Imagine a world without women! Think about the love, care and affection women bring into the world. The mission can and will be derailed if everybody meddles with each other’s role. Then, we lose focus. Often times, we desire to focus on our mission: we strive to choose Jesus – his ways, say his truth and live like him. But we have distractions. Daily distribution – a positive aspect of the life of the early Christians became a distraction for the apostles and they had to find a way to deal with it so as to focus on their calling. “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.” (1st reading)

1st Reading ACTS 6:1-7 As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.
Responsorial Psalm PS 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19
R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust
in you.
Exult, you just, in the LORD; praise from the upright is
fitting. Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; with the
ten-stringed lyre chant his praises.
R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust
in you.
Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are
trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of
the LORD the earth is full.
R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust
in you.
See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them
from death and preserve them in spite of famine.
R. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust
in you.
2nd Reading 1 PT 2:4-9
Beloved: Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it says in Scripture: Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame. Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall. They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Gospel JN 14:1-12
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”

Reflection-Continued You too have been called to follow Jesus to
attain eternal life. Your job, family, friends, etc. are
all ways you are responding to this call. They could
also become a source of distraction in your
commitment to follow Jesus. What constitutes your
greatest distraction today? Just as distractions can
derail your heavenly journey with Jesus, it can also
disrupt your progress and growth in everything both
spiritual and temporal. Identify your object or subject
of distraction and devise a way to deal with it. What
are you worried about the most? How long have you
been worried and troubled over that particular issue?
How much relief have worries and anxiety brought to
you all these while? You and I know the answer:
none. Today, Jesus says: cast your worries unto me.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what
you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they
do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet
your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much
more valuable than they? Can any one of you by
worrying add a single hour to your life …” (Mt. 6:25
– 34) Easier said than done. I know. Ask him today to
show you the way to follow him without fear and
worries.
Fifth Sunday of Easter – 10 May 2020
Acts 6:1-7. Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19. 1 Peter 2:4-9. John 14:1-12.
Chosen, Royal, and Holy. Jesus tells the disciples during the Last Supper that they know the way – to God, to new life, to heaven. This astonishing resurrect-ed life, given us in Baptism, makes us chosen, royal, and holy people. We know, because of Jesus, the way to be all three.
• What mercy work will I do this week that fosters God’s loving kindness?
• How will this mercy activity make me more the royal and worthy person I am?
How will I be holy?
Respect Life Corner-“I am the way, and the truth and the life.” John 14:6 In John’s Gospel, Jesus is again encouraging his disciples to have faith and trust in Him and to” be not afraid.” By believing in Him, they also believe in His Father and soon the Holy Spirit, which makes up the Holy Trinity. The disciples are worried about how to follow their beloved friend, Jesus, who walked with them, talked with them, taught them and ate with them. They are confused over how to follow where Jesus is going—to heaven, His Father’s house. Jesus urges them to trust and to “not let your hearts be troubled.” The disci-ples were unsure what was happening and filled with fear. How many of us relate to that in our present day with the COVID-19 pandemic. We reflect today on how important it is to place everything at the foot of the cross. By the cross, we have been set free from fear, trepidation and anxiety. Christ has redeemed the world. It is our job to listen to Him. Think, Act, Connect and Pray-Praying through transitions can be extremely helpful. Let Jesus walk with you. Speak with him about what has gone in your life and share your feelings. Remember to keep Christ’s love for you in your heart as you look to the past… and to the future, a new place God has in store for you!
