Reflection Last weekend, we reflected on the mystery of giving and how it is connected to dying – dying to self in order to give of self (like Jesus) to others – whether this other person is literally a missionary or ‘this little one’, with ‘little’ signifying the needy or even ‘self’ as a disciple willingly carrying Jesus’ cross without grudging and complaints. It is quite interesting how this journey today, (after these fine curves) has brought us back to the theme from where we veered off – the mission of the messiah to which he invited us – restoration of the peace of Eden and renewing the face of the earth. And we can make the connection with these words from St. Paul: “...through him to reconcile to himself all things, ...making peace through the blood of His cross.” (Col. 1:20) Our reflection today centers on how the mystery of giving and dying can effectively enhance our shared mission with the Master: “He shall banish the chariots from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations.” (1st reading) In contrast to the use of chariots and horses, (animals used in wars) he chose to ride on an ass, a seemingly weak animal but strong enough to get the work done. An ass is a symbol of meekness – a quality Jesus ascribed to himself and invites us to imbibe: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart...” (Gospel) Meekness is difficult to translate because we often think that it is a sign of weakness. ‘But meekness is a quality of heart whereby a person willingly accepts and submits without resistance to the will and desires of someone else.’ Meekness is the opposite of self-will, self-interest, and self-assertiveness. This is not a sign of weakness or weakness of character but of strength for it requires great self-control to submit to others. Now this was what Jesus did and this is what he wants us to do to achieve peace. Meekness is contrary to what our bodies desire. The ‘self’ is a monster too strong to be tamed. When one’s achievements, blessings and endowments are counted, pride is an obvious thing. But this makes us debtors to the flesh. The only way to conquer this is to let the Spirit of Jesus live in us: “... but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” (2nd reading) Jesus has invited us to learn from him how to keep peace. How can we do this? He is meek and humble. Can we be like him? In what areas of our lives do we pride ourselves better than the others? What are those things that make us proud? These deeds of the flesh, how can we put them to death? Self-control and self-mastery are acts. How can they be achieved? We do not have to be right all the time. Humility assures us that it is okay to be wrong at times and so, our confidence is steady. Therefore, humility makes us ready to withstand ‘the storm’ when things do not go the way we thought they would. It helps us realize that falling is not a problem. It does not mean that we cannot do something or not good enough. So, we are not ashamed to fall. If we do, we get up. Asking for help is not a problem. If we are in need, we ask to be helped and not be embarrassed. We realize its human to err, if we do, we ask for forgiveness. All these are forms of dying but we rise and become better versions of ourselves and closer to the image of Jesus. God Bless You!

1st Reading ZEC 9:9-10 Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth
Responsorial Psalm PS 145:1-2,8-9,10-11,13-14 R. (cf. 1) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. I will extol you, O my God and King, and I will bless your name forever and ever. Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
2nd Reading ROM 8:9, 11-13
Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spir-it that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Gospel MT 11:25-30
At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Fa-ther, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
