    Leader

    Great leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an

    effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of education, training, and

    experience. To inspire your workers into higher levels of teamwork, there are certain things you

    must be, know, and, do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work

    and study.

    A leader is someone who inspires others to follow to achieve a designed goal. On the other hand,

    someone who possesses talent, skills, traits, vision, planning, determination etc., and acts alone

    without influencing others is not a leader.

    Leadership

    1. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objectiveand directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.

    2. Leadership is the ability to others to do what they dont like to do and like it.3. Leadership is not just the purview of a few people born with certain traits that make them

    effective leaders. The skills approach refers that many people have leadership potential,

    and if they can learn from their experiences, they can become more effective leaders.

    Leadership Attributes

    BE KNOW DO

    BE a professional. Be loyal to the organization, perform selfless service, take personal

    responsibility.

    BE a professional who has good character traits like Honesty, competence, commitment,

    integrity, courage, straightforwardness and imagination.

    KNOW the four factors of leadership follower, leader, communication, situation.

    KNOW yourself. You must be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

    KNOW human nature. Good leader must know human needs and emotions.

    KNOW your goals and objectives

    DO provide direction. This include goal setting, problem solving, decision making, planning.

    DO implement. This includes communicating, coordinating, supervising and evaluating.

    DO motivate.

    Leadership Skills Approach vs Trait Approach

    Skills Approach

    In skills approach, we focus on a persons skills and abilities that can be learned and developed

    by experience and training. Skills are based on knowledge and abilities that a person gains

    throughout life. The ability to learn a new skill varies from one individual to other. Some skills

    come almost naturally, while others come only by complete devotion to study and practice.

    Traits Approach

    In trait approach, we focused on personality traits that are considered inherent and relatively

    stable from birth. Traits are distinguished qualities of a ones character like honesty,

    There is an old-fashioned approach of leadership is that leaders are marked out for leadership

    from early on in their lives; and that if you are not a born leader, there's little you can do to

    become one. The modern view is that through patience, persistence and hard work, training and

    experience you can be a truly effective leader, just as long as you make the effort needed.

    It is observed that leaders come-up with many different styles, some have been effective or

    caring and some have been divisive or even ruthless. Some have been great role models, others

    big disappointments.

    Following are specific skills someone must master if they want to be a leader.

    Communication Skills

    Communications skills were considered highest by most respondents and another recent survey

    of recruiters ranks it as one of the more decisive skills when a company hires a manager. To be a

    great leader or manager, you must be a great communicator. Communication skills can be broken

    down into three areas.

    Speaking Skills

    Speaking skill is considered to be most important because they have to clearly communicate their

    message through verbal communication.

    Listening Skills

    A huge part of being a great communicator is being a great listener. When someone comes to

    your office to speak with you, being a good leader, put down everything you are doing, turn to

    them and give them your full attention.

    Written Skills

    Emails, memos and reports are all forms of written communications skills. They can be a very

    effective and efficient means of communications provided they are done correctly.

    Integrity

    Integrity means honesty. This refers to having strong internal guiding principles that one does

    not compromise. It means treating others as you would wish to be treated. Integrity is a skill to

    the extent that we see it in action. But it goes much deeper than surface actions. Integrity is

    reflected in your thinking, attitudes, and actions. In a leader, followers cant directly see your

    level of integrity, but they judge it accurately on a gut level based on your actions and your

    words.

    Vision or Strategy

    Vision is another important component of good leadership quality. A leader must have a clear

    idea about his vision or mission statement.

    Human or Interpersonal Skills

    Human / interpersonal skills are proficiency in working with peoplebased on a personsknowledge about people

    and how they behave, how they operate in groups, how to communicate

    effectively with them, and their motives, attitudes, and feelings. The way to influence followers,

    then, is to earn their liking and respect, to appeal to the friendship factor. It requires spending

    time with others, caring and respecting. The more amount of time that you are willing to spend

    with the people, the greater will be his tendency to trust you and to feel that you are acting in

    their best interest.

    Persuasion Skills

    Leadership is often defined as the ability to persuade or influence others to do something they

    might not have done without the leaders persuasion. The ability to influence others and cause

    them to move in a particular direction is a highly important skill in leadership.

    Adaptability Skills

    The good leader has to embrace change and see it as an opportunity. Adaptability is a very

    critical skill in leadership. Adaptability and flexibility in not being bound by a plan are important

    success factors in leadership today. The leader must move easily from one set of circumstances

    to another.

    Teamwork / Team building Skills

    One of the best ways to lead is by example. A good leader knows when to be a leader and when

    to be a follower. No individual can do it all.

    Benjamin Disraeli said, I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?

    Great leaders are followers too. If youre a leader without following, youre a dictator.

    Coaching and encouraging

    Encouragement is considered oxygen to the soul. If you desire to be a great leader, giving

    encouragement is a skill you must develop. Encouraging followers to expand their capabilities

    and take on additional assignments is part of the leaders responsibility.

    Decision-making

    A leader must be able to wade through information, comprehend whats relevant, make a well-

    considered decision, and take action based on that decision. Making decisions too quickly or too

    slowly will impede your leadership effectiveness.

    Planning Skills

    To plan means to focus more strategically. Planning involves making certain assumptions about

    the future and taking actions in the present to positively influence that future. Plans are important

    for guidance and focus, but plans can seldom be cast in stone. Planning is an excellent and

    necessary example leadership skill.

    Passion Skills

    Without passion, no one can be a great leader. It drives a lot, and you can inspire so much in

    others through your own passion and enthusiasm. Being a leader you must be able to set goals

    and determine priorities to achieve those goals. Leaders who produce results not only drive value

    to the business, but increase their value to the organization. You need to have a can do attitude

    about showing results.

    Technical Skills (Knowledge)

    More knowledgeable leaders are able to consider complex organizational issues and to develop

    alternative and appropriate strategies for change. Knowledge is linked to a leaders problem-

    solving skills. These are the skills required to effectively influence superiors and subordinates inthe achievement of organizational goals. Technical skill is proficiency, based on specific

    knowledge, in a particular area of work. To have technical skills means that a person is

    competent and knowledgeable with respect to the activities specific to an organization, rules and

    standard operating procedures.

    Problem-Solving Skills

    These are creative abilities that leaders bring to unique, vague, hard to address in organizational

    problems. These skills include identifying the problems and issues and gathering relevant

    information and making plans to solve.

    Problem-solving skills operate in the context of an organization and its environment and require

    that leaders be aware of their own capacities and challenges relative to the problem/issue and the

    organizational context.
