friends. We must say that we have a feeling that we belong to such a world.

Every person wants to prove himself in this fast, dynamic and cut-throat competitive

1) RECRUITMENT

Full-cycle recruiting is a term used by human resources specialists who manage the

recruitment process from start to finish. Full-cycle recruiting begins with sourcing

candidates, which means looking for prospective applicants whose qualifications might be

suitable for the job openings you have. Sourcing has evolved in the past several years with

the proliferation of job and career sites. Many of the newspapers that once had pages of

job listings in the Sunday edition have been replaced by job sites such as CareerBuilder

and Monster.

2) SELECTION

Once the applicant has become a candidate, it means she has the requisite skills to warrant

an investment of resources necessary to schedule, prepare and conduct an interview.

These days interviews are one of the most important factors in the selection process

because the recruiter and hiring manager are looking at more than what can the candidate

do for the company. They are looking for soft skills the candidate may have in terms of

building teams, working in collaboration with other professionals, and what the candidate

can bring to the company that no other candidate can. Interviews may be one-on-one for

administrative and support positions; however, candidates for management and director

level positions can expect to be panel interviewed and judged on their capability to

interact with a variety of personalities while presenting her qualifications in a manner that

sells her capabilities to the prospective employer.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Dale S. Beach defines training as ‘the organized procedure by which people learn

knowledge and/or skill for a definite purpose’. Training refers to the teaching and learning

26

activities carried on for the primary purpose of helping members of an organization

acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes needed by a particular job

and organization.

According to Edwin Flippo, ‘training is the act of increasing the skills of an employee for

doing a particular job’.

PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL SYSTEM

Performance Appraisal is the systematic evaluation of the performance of employees and

to understand the abilities of a person for further growth and development. Performance

appraisal is generally done in systematic ways which are as follows:

27

plans.

2. The supervisor analyses the factors behind work performances of employees.

3. The employers are in position to guide the employees for a better performance.

ADVANTAGES OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL

It is said that performance appraisal is an investment for the company which can be

justified by following advantages:

Performance Appraisal helps the supervisors to chalk out the promotion

programmes for efficient employees. In this regards, inefficient workers can be

dismissed or demoted in case.

2. COMPENSATION:

Performance Appraisal helps in chalking out compensation packages for

employees. Merit rating is possible through performance appraisal. Performance

Appraisal tries to give worth to a performance. Compensation packages which

includes bonus, high salary rates, extra benefits, allowances and pre-requisites are

dependent on performance appraisal. The criteria should be merit rather than

seniority.

3. EMPLOYEES DEVELOPMENT:

The systematic procedure of performance appraisal helps the supervisors to frame

training policies and programmes. It helps to analyse strengths and weaknesses of

28

employees so that new jobs can be designed for efficient employees. It also helps in

framing future development programmes.

4. SELECTION VALIDATION:

Performance Appraisal helps the supervisors to understand the validity and

importance of the selection procedure. The supervisors come to know the validity

and thereby the strengths and weaknesses of selection procedure. Future changes

in selection methods can be made in this regard.

performance of employees, a person’s efficiency can be determined if the targets

are achieved. This very well motivates a person for better job and helps him to

improve his performance in the future.

TIME AND ATTENDANCE

29

Organizations of all sizes use time and attendance systems to record when

employees start and stop work, and the department where the work is performed.

However, it’s also common to track meals and breaks, the type of work performed,

and the number of items produced. In addition to tracking when employees work,

organizations also need to keep tabs on when employees are not working. Vacation

time, compensation time, FMLA time, and jury duty must be recorded. Some

organizations also keep detailed records of attendance issues such as who calls in

sick and who comes in late.

1)Manual systems

Manual systems rely on highly skilled people laboriously adding up paper cards

which have times stamped onto them using a time stamping machine or card

system . Time stamping machines have been in use for over a century are still used

by many organizations as a cheaper alternative

2)Automated systems

Automated time and attendance systems can use electronic tags, magnetic strips

cards, and biometric (vein reader, hand geometry, fingerprint, or facial), and touch

screens in place of paper cards which employees touch or swipe to identify

themselves and record their working hours as they enter or leave the work area.

The recorded information is then ideally automatically transferred to a computer

for processing although some systems require an operator to physically transfer

data from the clocking point to the computer using a portable memory device. The

computer may then be employed to perform all the necessary calculations to

generate employee timesheets which are used to calculate the employees' wages.
