KEYNOTE SPEECHES
Keynote 1:
The role of research integrity and publication ethics in university education for the 21st century
In this broad overview of integrity in university education for the 21st century, I will begin with a discussion of the modern university today. I will then move to a brief description of student violations of research integrity in the teaching context for both undergraduate and graduate students. Next, I will provide a framework for faculty integrity as well as integrity commit-ments for academic administrators in terms of the core mission of universities to facilitate knowledge and create and disseminate new knowledge. Finally, I will conclude the discus-sion with aspirational recommendations as core foundational principles for universities going forward.

Keynote 2:
Do as I say, not as I do? Setting student plagiarism in context
In this presentation I will take student plagiarism as a starting point and consider whether academic misconduct by students and by academic staff are treated equally. Several case studies will be presented in order to examine types of misconduct which range from the questionable to the manifestly wrong. From this, a perspective will be identified which can heighten awareness of ethical concerns among academic staff, as well as the beneficial flow-on effects for student understanding of academic ethics.

PLENARY SPEECHES
Plenary speech 1:
Plagiarism in German doctoral dissertations – still a marginal issue 8 years after the Guttenberg case
In February 2011 a paper was published documenting some plagiarism in the doctoral dissertation of then German minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. His denial of academic misconduct sparked a collaborative effort to document the quite extensive plagia-rism to be found.
A country-wide discussion about academic misconduct ensued, as the collaborative effort moved on to document plagiarism in other doctoral dissertations. Eight years later over 200 documentations have been published and the universities in question informed of the issue.
Although all universities in Germany have rules for dealing with academic misconduct that were formulated as a response to a large research scandal in the 90s, some universities are unaware that they have such rules. Even those who do know their own rules often don't follow them with respect to the whistleblowers.
A large body of legal cases has found that universities who follow their own rules are well within their rights to rescind doctorates even decades after granting them. But the topic of academic misconduct is still quite marginal at many German universities.

Plenary speech 2:
Pathos for ethics, leadership and the quest for a sustainable future
The aim of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) is to look critically at recent devel-opments in the field of business ethics both from a theoretical and a practitioners’ perspec-tive.
The international economic uncertainty has a direct impact on economic structure affecting everyone’s business life. The burning question in all the member states is whether Europe can continue to be identified with democracy, with the rule of law, with a European social state that transcends the demographic and fiscal crisis. Governments need to restore trust, confidence of consumers, investors they need business ethics more than ever. Europe urgently needs to return to growth rates.
Copying some of the key messages from European Business Summit to the political leaders: less unemployment, expansion of the EU external trade, promotion of private investment, innovation and more research and development, restructure of the very big public sector, safeguarding the Euro, improvement of public finances and structural reforms, education.
EBEN aspires to play a significant role by providing support to Academia, organizations, EU, governance, professionals, in order to adapt a new management approach, with the supply of business ethics principles, research tools, and training and best practices propagation.
EBEN mission is to promote ethics and excellence in businesses, to increase awareness about ethical challenges in the global marketplace and to enable dialogue on the role of busi-ness in society.
Inspired by Aristotle, Mr. Gortzis invites to go beyond “conventional wisdom”, to think outside the box, to move beyond the codifications of the existing tools. Bringing together Europeans, enhancing the growth of cultural ties between the countries and sharing best practices in doing business in today’s globalizing environment is prerequisite. The speaker believes, that Europe is by definition a very strong brand name and therefore, we have to make the most out of it.

The threat of false positives
False Positives elevates the risk of falsely accusing students of plagiarism and is time con-suming both for teachers and for students and may hide “real” plagiarism. So how do plagia-rism prevention systems handle False Positives, how is percentage even calculated and does this differ between systems?
Academic integrity is a problem at a global level and is gaining more attention in the region as the academic industry matures. Sporadic publications have focused on the status of cheating instances within the nation and across the region. In order to create a truly world-class edu-cation system, it is critical to focus on academic integrity which is vital to assessment practices.
In this interactive panel discussion, the panelists discuss the research opportunities coming out of the region, not only UAE but the Middle East and North Africa, as the moderated discussion takes the audience through a timeline of efforts and initiatives that have all culmi-nated towards a road to the Plagiarism Across Europe and Beyond 2020 conference in Dubai next year.
Ensuring and upholding integrity in education provides for a sustainable, constructive future, a platform that fosters, encourages and celebrates innovation and makes for happy individu-als, happy work places and happy society.
Under the theme of Integrity in Education for Innovative, Sustainable and Happy Tomorrow for the 2020 conference, the panel promises to highlight (1) collaborative opportunities (2) research opportunities (3) networking opportunities as the 2020 conference becomes a gateway for the West and the East, transforming the region, perspectives, attitudes and behaviour of all who attend.
SPONSOR KEYNOTES
Encouraging originality & celebrating diversity on a mega scale: The Unisa story
Academic Integrity is the value an educational institution holds for both students and instru tors. If this value is compromised or lost, then the significance of the institution is lost too. An institution the size of Unisa, referred to as one of the world’s “mega” universities, with over 400,000 enrolled students, is clearly bound to impact the lives of thousands of students and researchers, both directly and indirectly, within South Africa and also further afield. This means that building strong foundations of academic integrity are fundamental to also upholding the key values of the institution.
Erica Flinspach, Senior Integrity Officer and Turnitin Administrator at Unisa was crowned as Turnitin’s 2018 Global Innovator in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promoting academic integrity. During this keynote presentation she talks about her role and the unique experiences and challenges the university faces in developing a culture of academic integrity and upholding these values.

Author metrics: A stylometric approach to catching ghost writers
Stylometry, the analysis of style, is a quantitative approach which can be used to provide clues which indicate the authorship of disputed or questioned texts. Detecting or identifying ghost writers, also known as the Author Verification Problem, is a fundamental problem in stylometry.
To catch ghost writers, one needs a procedure which can answer the question: given one text or set of texts by an author, what is the likelihood they are all authored by the same person? One wish users report is to be able to automatically flag potential authorship violations for texts which are not available digitally online. For example: users would like to know if a text has been copied from an old book or written by a ghostwriter.
Author Metrics provides insights for educators to identify the style features of academic writ-ing of students and to detect cases where a student may have commissioned a third party to complete a writing assignment for them. We should be able to parse and analyze the word choice and text properties like sentence length to identify patterns. And by way of compari-son we should be able to alert when there are deviations between texts and within a docu-ment. This is where author verification by stylometry comes into play.
