2. PLANTATION OF SAPLINGS

Trees are an important part of every community. Government Polytechnic, Chintamani is

having total 10.5 Acres area. Our streets, parks, playgrounds and backyards are lined with trees

that create a peaceful, aesthetically pleasing environment. Over 1000 trees are grown in this

area. We gather under the cool shade they provide during outdoor activities, studies, group

discussion etc., Using trees in college campus to deflect the sunlight reduces the heat island

effect caused by pavement and commercial buildings.

National Service Scheme Unit of Government Polytechnic, Chintamani is continuously

focusing on plantation of saplings. Every year we are planting the saplings inside the college

premises and nearby villages. We are taking the support from forest office which is located in

Chintamani for having free saplings. Sometimes we are taking help from municipal office to

pour water to the saplings in summer seasons.

5. ORGANISATION OF AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

National service scheme of Government polytechnic, Chintamani has organizes awareness

campaign on various issues of health and hygiene, drug abuse, water resource, cleaning, etc.,

towards creating a healthier society. Drug abuse along with the abuse of alcohol coupled with

Smoking of tobacco products is taking a heavy toll on the health of the youth. It entails not

only health costs but also economic and social costs. To summarize, the spread of drug abuse

among the youth has starting hurting the foundation of our society

Strategy employed is involving students and NSS volunteers in awareness programs like rallies,

debates etc. because, students are the best messengers to carry the message to their parents,

family and other community members.

leading and digitally developed countries. Its main motto is to make the youth and students

getting involved in this major transformation that a nation is going through and thereby helping

others to adapt the change.

We at government polytechnic Chintamani organized an Awareness Program on “MAKING

INDIA CASHLESS ECONOMY” during 15-12-2016. As recently, the Union Human

Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has rightly advised the educational

institutions to promote cashless transactions. He believes that ―Participation in the campaign

by the youth in the higher educational institutions is highly relevant because they would be the

main beneficiaries of a digital economy — free of corruption & black money, completely

transparent economical system.

5.3 Swachh Bharat Campaign

If proper hygiene and sanitation will not become a practice in our country then no one will be

able to save the country from the health hazards and losses that will loom over the Indian

populace in near future. So, let's make Swachh Bharat a mass movement and save our country

from all the dangers.

Swachh Bharat Campaign: The Abhiyan was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on

2nd of October, 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi with an aim to make India clean. Aim is to provide

sanitation facilities to every family, including toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems,

village cleanliness, and safe and adequate drinking water supply by 2nd October, 2019. It will

be a befitting tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 150th birth anniversary. It is significant

that the PM himself is taking very proactive role in making the campaign a success; at Rajghat

he started the campaign by cleaning the street himself.

Water resource management awareness rally

Sustainable water management is one of the global grand challenges of our time. Tackling this

challenge through corrective actions would require the participation of the general public, a

public with sound awareness of the challenge and commitment. One such awareness raising

intervention could be through the use of water symbolism and proverbs, targeted to particular

society. Chickballapur and Kolar district is facing lot of water resource issue from few years.

6. CREATION OF DURABLE ASSETS THROUGH

SHRAMADAAN

6.1 Academic Year 2015-16

Wherever possible, a community should avoid the health risks which result from using

contaminated pond water, by using an alternative, good-quality source. (Groundwater or

rainwater sources will usually produce water of much better quality.) If a pond is the only

source of water, cleaning the surrounding area will help to improve the quality of the water. It

is not easy to find a sustainable way to produce good-quality potable water from ponds, but

any improvement in the quality of pond water is worth the effort.

National service scheme unit of government polytechnic, Chintamani worked hard to clean the

pond which is located in Kagathi village. Our NSS volunteers removed the suspended matter

6.3 Drainage cleaning work

In villages, running water is an important part of so many daily tasks. Cleaning, cooking, toilet

usage, and bathing all require the use of water. Drainage systems can indeed become clogged

with hair, soap, and other objects. There are a number of factors that can contribute to drains

getting backed up. But they are pretty much obvious. Any object other than water that enters

the system can cause blockage. When this happens, it is best to get them cleaned the right way.

Drain cleaning services are the best option when in need of drain cleaning in village.

National Service Scheme Unit of Government Polytechnic, Chintamani worked hard during

NSS special camp 2014-15 and cleaned the drainage up to 3 Kms in booragamakana Halli,

6.4 Pond cleaning work

Ponds are little containers of biodiversity; however, because ponds are small standing bodies

of water, they may be easily disrupted by human activity. Activities such as overgrazing by

cattle, fertilization and sewage runoff may damage the delicate balance of pond’s health. Even

the well-intentioned addition of fish, plants, or retaining walls can cause damage to the ecology.

Pond conservation works to rehabilitate the ecological health and restore life to your

waterscape.

Page 31: Proforma for recommending NSS UNIT & …dte.karnataka.gov.in/Institutes/gptchinatamani/File...NSS REPORT FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-15, 2015-16, & 2016-17 NSS UNIT, GOVT. POLYTECHNIC,

7. OTHER OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS

7.1 Academic Year 2015-16

National Service scheme unit of government polytechnic Chintamani has a vision of serving

society by using technology.

Our institute is educating the aspirants in technological field to serve the society. We adopted

this as our vision of NSS and we started working towards technological field by joining final

year students from different courses to execute our dreams into practical. From the academic

year 2015-16 we are developing the agricultural equipment at low cost and distributing the

same to the formers of adopted village.

During the year 2015-16, our NSS volunteers from mechanical engineering course are designed

and implemented the manual tiller. This is very essential for the formers to remove weed in the

cultivated areas.

7.2 Manual tiller or Weed Removing Equipment (Weeders)

Weeds are one of the major causes of loss of agricultural produce. Weeds compete with crops

for essential nutrients. In agriculture, it’s a very difficult task to weed out unwanted plants

manually as well as using bullock operated equipment’s which may further lead to damage of

main crops. More than 33 percent of the cost incurred in cultivation is diverted to weeding

operations there by reducing the profit share of farmers. Weeders are machines used for weed

removal. Mechanical weeding is one of the prominent forms of weed removal. Smaller weeding

machines commonly known as portable weeders are solely used for weed removal in

agricultural fields, gardens, public parks, etc. Unlike tractors, weeders are non-conventional so

far as the displacement of labours is concerned. In promoting weeders especially considering

the fact that the majority of farmers are having small land. So they can hardly afford costlier

tractors. Therefore, the weeder should become a useful machine in the internal cleaning of

crops which having small distance between them like groundnuts, sugarcane, soya bin crops,

cultivation of paddy, in particular, and other crops in general for the smaller farmers.

Fig. 7.1 Working of manual tiller in weed developed area to remove weeds and to loosening

the soil

7.2.1 Major advantages of manual tiller may be summed up as follows:

1. Used for tilling the soil and removing of weed between the crops.

2. Ploughing the soil between rows of other crops.

3. This is very suitable for Indian formers, who facing the shortage of labours.

4. Construction of this tiller is very simple and easy.

5. This tiller is operated without any electricity and fuel.

6. This is used for cultivation of paddy, chilly, tobacco and horticulture crops.

7. This tiller is very less cost.

8. Improve working efficiency.

9. Increase crop yields.

10. Less maintenance.

11. Easy to carry due to its weight is less.

12. Used in home gardens, parks and where make some small vegetation and gardens.

13. This tiller wants only man power to operate.

14. When this tiller is used the man gets good exercises and also good personality because

of this device is work on man power.

7.2.2 Scope of this Project

1. The manual tiller can be used for tilling or loosening the soil and remove the weed.

2. Manual tiller can be used in agricultural fields, where the two different crops are

cultivated in same place.

3. It is designed as a portable one which can be used for remove the weed in between

different crops.

4. This manual tiller is work without any external energy like fuel, electricity and any

mechanism. So this is very cheap and best.

5. Manual tiller helps to obtain less effort for weed removing.

7.2.3 Ploughing equipment

Ploughing equipment is used to loosen the soil in between the planted crop which is usually

wasted by the formers. The space between the planted area is too small for tractor or tiller to

do the work, where we can use this ploughing equipment as a soil loosening, mixing of

fertilisers and weed removal purpose with least expense. Here we need not use animals with

least human effort formers can do the work and fulfil their requirements.

Fig. 7.3 Working of Ploughing equipment to loosen the soil in between the planted crop.

7.2.4 Applications of Ploughing equipment in various agricultural fields

1. For loosening the moisture soil and mixing the Fertilizer.

2. For removing weed between crops.

3. Nurseries.

4. In horticulture crops.

5. Cultivation of flowers.

1. It is mainly used for loosening the soil between the crops.

2. And also used for removing the weed between the crops.

3. Used for cultivating the new crops between the crops.

4. It also useful to mixing of the soil and fertilize.

Manual tiller has been designed, fabricated, assembled according to our objectives. This

equipment is successfully implemented in various agricultural areas to reduce manpower

requirement. According to our analysis manual tiller gives more economical utilization

7.3 Academic Year 2016-17

National Service scheme unit of government polytechnic Chintamani has a vision of serving

society by using technology.

Our institute is educating the aspirants in technological field to serve the society. We adopted

this as our vision of NSS and we started working towards technological field by joining final

year students from different courses to execute our dreams into practical. From the academic

year 2016-17 we are developing the agricultural equipment at low cost and distributing the

same to the formers of adopted village.

During the year 2016-17, our NSS volunteers from mechanical engineering course are designed

and implemented the solar powered grass cutter under the guidance of Mr. Shane Gowda T G,

Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Programme. This is very essential for the formers to remove

weed in the cultivated areas.

7.4 Solar powered grass cutter

Agriculture is the science or practice of farming. In India over 70% of the rural households

depend on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood. So all the Indian farmers are

upgrading to modern agriculture equipment’s and tools also adopted this modern agriculture.

Our project concentrating on the modern agricultural equipment ‘Grass cutter’ which will

fulfill the requirements of our agriculturalists to work with less effort and less manpower.

A Grass cutter is a multipurpose device which is used in agriculture field to cut grass and also

removes the weed in any agriculture fields. Agricultural workers maintain the quality of farms,

7.4.1 Following are the scope of our project.

1. The Grass cutter is used to cut the grass in various designs and required levels.

2. Grass cutter can be used in agricultural fields, where it can be used in various place.

3. It is designed as a portable one which can be used for cut the weed in between different

crops.

4. This Grass cutter is work without any external energy like fuel. So this is very cheap and

best.

5. Grass cutter helps to obtain less effort for weed removing.

7.4.2 Working principle of electrically powered Grass and weed Cutter

Fig.7.8 Working of Electrically Powered Grass and weed Cutter

The working principle of Grass cutter is that it is having a battery arrangement that it can be

charged by using the alternate current charger provided. The charger when connected to power

supply that it converts ac power supply into dc output which the energy can be stored in the

battery. The motor runs by the electrical power outputted by the battery which circuited by

means of the copper wires, between this interconnection the circuit breaker (SWITCH) is

circuited to start and stop the working of the DC motor which we provided. When the motor

runs by this power supply power is transmitted to the coupling of the blade which blade and

shaft of the motor are coupled and this makes the blade to rotate to cut the grass.
