BIRMINGHAM INTERMODAL FREIGHT TERMINALBirmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal currently under construction close to junction 10 of the M42motorway north east of Birmingham, when complete will receive containerised rail freightconsignments from China and the Far East via Southampton docks.

For Anglo Holt acting for client I M Properties , one of the designand construction challenges was the provision to handle stormwater running off a large area of concrete hard standing totalling8.5ha (21 acres). Limitations imposed by the Environmental Agencyfor storm water discharging into a local brook, demanded a systemto control and limit the flow equal to previous run off when theland was in agricultural use. The calculation had to take intoconsideration avoidance of surface flooding and rainfall modelledon events up to the 1 in 20 year storm prediction formula.

The solution reached in conjunction with consultants Farebrotherswas an ingenious underground complex of 77 interconnected, 1.8m(5.9ft) dia. galvanised corrugated steel pipes stretching over 500m(1,640ft) with a storage capacity of 3,500m3 of storm water . Releaseof storm water into the brook was controlled by a smaller outletpipe .Pollution controls to Environmental Agency standards met bythe installation of by-pass interceptors.

Anglo HoltAnglo HoltProfile ProfileTOWCESTERRACECOURSEThe brief to design and build a new grandstand forTowcester Racecourse called for a mindset in tune with theracecourse’s beautiful setting in the parklands of theEaston Neston estate.

The original vision shared between client TowcesterRacecourse Limited, and our design and construction teamhas now turned from a vision into reality.

With its 7 storey landmark main tower reaching 45m (147 ft) to the top of the flagpole, the magnificent facility ispart of a £7.5 million investment by Towcester RacecourseLimited to provide sporting and leisure facilities of a premiernational hunt venue.

"The new grandstand is a demonstration of how a design andconstruction contractor and their supply chain can work inharmony to meet a challenging brief and this projectrepresents a further visible example of our strengths in corebusiness sectors such as the leisure market" said Tony Wehby,Anglo Holt's director responsible for the project.

This latest project represented Anglo Holt’s second contractcompletion to upgrade all round facilities at theNorthamptonshire course.

An earlier £1.8 million project provided owner, trainer andjockey facilities including 104 individual stalls, changing roomsand catering facilities.

THAMES VALLEY POLICE FIREARMS TRAINING CENTREThe recently completed £4 million state of the art firearms training centre for Thames Valley Policeat Reading, has received a First Class Achievement at the PMA (Project Managers Association)awards ceremony.

Civil and structural consulting engineers Hannah Reed Associates received Project Manager of theYear Award for what was described in the citation as ‘an interesting project with some uniquerequirements especially in health and safety’. The judges praised Hannah Reed Associates for ‘bringing together diverse experts in this very specialised environment.’

The 52 week contract procured through a two stage tender, centred around a two storey buildinglocated in a semi- concealed position so as to reduce impact on local surroundings. Noise levelsfrom the 50m shooting range were minimised through the specification of acoustic materials and building design features.

Anglo Holt were responsible for the comprehensive fitting out of the facility. Capital investment by the police force focussed on the latesttype of incident simulation equipment.

This year Travelodge will open a new hotel every 10 days. In the next 6 years the budget hotel group is forecasting to open 15,000 rooms.

The result of a long established, strong and fruitful working partnership between Travelodge and Anglo Holt is helping to drive that hectic pace.Anglo Holt Construction has already completed 3 new hotels this year and is well on the way to a fourth - adding a total of 442 rooms in contractsaveraging 44 weeks. Earlier this year, Anglo Holt started work on its largest individual Travelodge contract of £7.5 million at Manchester Airport forclient Manchester Airport Developments.

In contract values totalling over £20 million, Anglo Holt’s project and construction teams have faced challenging issues as Travelodge’s growth strategyfocuses on town and city centre locations.

At Worcester, Guildford and Nottingham, day to day operations in heavily congested and built up town centre sites called for finite logistical planningof work schedules and materials deliveries while minimum disruption of business for existing tenants, shoppers and town centre visitors neededcareful handling and a good neighbour strategy.

“Demolition and stripping out of existing buildings, control of dust and noise are just some of theissues facing us in town centre environments.Contracts of this nature have earned us areputation of considerate constructors.” Said AndyElwell, Anglo Holt’s contacts director.

At Guildford, restricted access, a constricted siteand overhead power lines were issues to beaddressed while at Worcester and Nottingham, building sites within conservation zones broughtAnglo Holt’s past experience into play.
