INTRODUCTION:-
The Post-Graduate Department of History, Khallikote Autonomous
College, Berhampur is one of the oldest departments of the College dating
back its inception to 1878 having only intermediate classes. In 1944 it had
Under Graduate courses and finally, in 1992, it acquired Post Graduation
teaching facilities. The department, right from its beginning, maintained, all
along, a record of academic excellence, some of its students having been
placed in various important avocations both inside and outside the state.
COURSE OFFERED / COURSE STRUCTURE:-
At present the Department offers courses both at the Under Graduate
and Post Graduate levels. The course structure has been designed in
consonance with the U.G.C. guidelines. Special care has been taken in the
preparation of the syllabi by incorporating chapters relating to the study of
Regional History and Culture, Historical application in Tourism and new
aspects of the national and global history. The semester system of
examination has been introduced both at the Under-Graduate and Post-
Graduate levels, with effect from 2007-2008 sessions. Special care is being

taken for the completion of courses on time, recession work, when
necessary. The Department offers Elective course titled Landmarks in Indian
History; & Indian Society & Culture as a compulsory course for all students
of Final year Arts, Science & Commerce at Under Graduate level.
Furthermore, the Department has introduced 2 new papers on the subject
Historiography & Cultural History of Orissa at P.G. level in the Academic
Session 2008-2009. Proposal for opening up of M.Phil Course in the subject
has been given to the Govt. by the college vide

SEMINAR ACTIVITIES
Every year students of the dept. take part in the Seminar paper
presentation and discussion activities from which they benefit immensely.
During the session 2012-13 a number of papers were presented by the
Students. Among the papers presented, mention may be made of the
following:

STUDY TOUR (2004-2013)
Students of the Post-Graduate Classes were taken on Study Tour to
places of Historical and Cultural importance to gain practical knowledge
about the ancient monuments. During the course of such tours students
visited the Sun Temple at Konark ,the Temple of Jagannath at Puri,Lingaraj
temple and other temples in Bhubaneswar. Students were also taken to
places of religious and cultural importance like Khandagiri and Udaygiri.
Lalitagiri and Ratnagiri known for their Architectural and Sculptural
grandeur. The P.G. students had visited places like Koraput and Malkangiri
and gained first-hand knowledge on eco-tourism as well as on tribal Culture
and heritage of our State. A Study Tour was undertaken to Bhubaneswar in
July 2013 . Students of P.G. part II class visited Odisha State Museum, Dhauli
Giri, Khandagiri and Udaygiri ; and Temples built during the Somavamsi
period.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF FACULTY MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT
All members of the teaching Staff are quite senior, experienced and
committed to their duties. Besides engaging their regular classes allotted to
them, they take a number of remedial and doubt-clearing classes in the
greater interest of the students. With the introduction of Semester system
of examination w.e.f. 2007, special care is being taken by the teachers for
the timely completion of courses; conduct of viva-voce tests and seminar
activities, conduct of internal assessment tests and other activities.

As regards the academic pursuits of teachers, it is needless to mention
here that all members of the teaching staff are quite experienced and
competent in the field of their specialization. In spite of their pre-
occupations in the departmental works, they regularly attend Seminars,
Workshops and such other Intellectual gatherings, at the State, national and
International levels and present their papers. They have many books and
research articles to their credit, details of which have been attached at the
end of this presentation.

the real sense.
PLANS AND PROPOSALS
Keeping in view the demands of the students from time to time, the
deptt. has put before the College Authorities a proposal for opening up of
M.Phil Course in History. The deptt. is also planning for hosting a National
level Seminar, with U.G.C. assistance on a topic pertaining to the Socio-
economic and Cultural aspects of our History. The deptt. has submitted
proposal to the UGC for the renovation / remodelling of the Seminar Room,
Class Room and Teachers’ Cum Deptt. Office Room along with A/C
Provision.

The deptt. looks forward for those days when students passing out of
it would be settled in various walks of life bringing laurels to this premier
educational institution of the State. May this deptt. prosper, grow in stature
and bring glory to all concerned.
