Greetings from Aalto Prof. Rodrigo Serna METYK seminar December 13th , 2016
Aalto University’s international programs on sustainable raw materials processing
European Mining, Minerals and Environmental Program
• An international cooperation program celebrating its 20th
anniversary in 2016!
• An consortium of top-level universities offering exchange programs in mining and mineral processing
• Various partner universities in its history, current partners include:
European Mining, Minerals and Environmental Program
• European Mining Course (EMC)
• Two-year joint triple degree program offered by a consortium of Europe's leading universities in resource engineering: Aalto University, TU Delft and RWTH Aachen University
• Program builds on the strengths and the complementary expertise in earth sciences of these three universities, leading to a high-quality degree in mining engineering
European Mining, Minerals and Environmental Program
• European Mineral and Recycling Engineering Course (EMREC)
• MSc mobility program offered by two European leading universities in resource engineering: Aalto University and TU Delft
• Leads to an outstanding qualification in mineral and recycling process engineering
European Mining, Minerals and Environmental Program • Accomplishments of the Federation of European Mining Programs
(FEMP): • The preservation of mining and minerals engineering programs at several
universities • Build relationships between 5 geographically diverse universities • Educating over 750 students with 61 nationalities
• Contributions > 2 million Euros since 2001 for students • Participation in Erasmus Mundus program from 2008-2014
with > 4 million Euros in scholarships to 62 (most non EU) students

• Creates a network of universities interested in promoting entrepreneurship in metallic raw materials production
• Three academic partners (Aalto University + Freiberg University + Wroclaw University of Technology) and an industrial partner (Outotec)
Circular Economy Design Forum
• ”Training the trainers” event coordinated by Aalto Ventures
Program
• Entrepreneurial education in the context of circular economy
• Circular Economy Entrepreneurship in System Integrated Metals Processing (CEE SIMP)
• EIT-Raw Materials Doctoral education program
• Pilot course successfully carried out in Spring 2016
• Doctoral level course of 5ECST organized by Aalto University together with its eight partners; KU Leuven, TUDelft, Lund University, Tallinn University of Technology, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Outotec, Jernkontoret and Dimecc
Circular Economy Entrepreneurship in System Integrated Metals Processing (CEE SIMP)
• CEE SIMP in a nutshell
• Two year project, pilot in spring 2016, from February to June
• 2nd course in spring 2017 with a 50% increased intake (from 20 metallurgists, chemists, environmental scientists and geologists to 30 students) in a slightly modified form (expansion approved by EIT).
• Focus on circular economy, entrepreneurship and utilization of waste streams from metals processing
Circular Economy Entrepreneurship in System Integrated Metals Processing (CEE SIMP)
Course aims
• Students: • Development of an entrepreneurial insight
• ”Lectures + assignments + campus = knowledge + opportunity = successful course”
• Multidisciplinarity – learning from peers’ different approaches
• Participation of industry actors, presence of the partner companies in the Summer
Camp and Idea Camp.
• Interaction with students, speakers and industry representatives
• Companies: • New feasible ideas for utilization of process waste
