CHILD INSPIRED PLAY SPACES

Facilitator: Marli TraillMarli has extensive experience in providing high quality professional support to the education and care sector. Through Marli’s work as a professional support consultant and Cub Leader she has grown her enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors; this has been enriched in recent times as she undertook a six day Nature Pedagogy course, led by International Educational consultant – Claire Warden. Marli is a thinker, doer and adventurer.

Fostering a connection between children and the natural environment has the ability to encourage curiosity and adventure through imagination and exploration. Together we will explore the possibilities by inviting conversation about the ways aesthetics and an interactional environment cultivates richer experiences and opportunities for children’s learning, in a space designed by children for children. Multi-sensory stimulation of nature will be experienced in this session, as you smell, touch and identify practical elements that will foster a richer connection with objects that are freely available for nature play.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Explore what inspires and excites you to plan the experiences you want children to have

• Develop skills in advocating for the energetic learning that creates a strong appreciation of the outdoors

• Learn through conducting an analysis of spaces incorporating texture, light and colour

• Plan, Act and Review strategies and techniques for developing creative inspiring spaces.

CHILDREN’S RIGHTS – WHAT DO THEY MEAN IN EVERYDAY PRACTICE?

Facilitator: Stephen GallenStephen Gallen has over 20 years’ experience in the early and middle childhood field, across all service types. His work focus has been in developing emergent curriculum and Reggio Emilia inspired programs. He has been delivering professional development in the field for over a decade. Feedback from his sessions for us in 2016 was so positive we are running them again!

This workshop will explore how an understanding of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child can guide our work. What might our services, our spaces, routines and programs look like when we really listen to children? How can we create flexible, responsive environments? How can we make the most from the multi-age grouping opportunities across the day? How might we create spaces where choices go beyond self-selection of activities, towards self-determination?

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Understand the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in the context of early and middle childhood services

• Unpack the practical application of each of the children’s rights named in the Convention

• Reimagine learning environments, curriculum and practice to support a strong children’s rights framework to all aspects of working with children.

DRAMA AND STORYTELLING - WHERE DO I START?

Facilitator: Louise DorratLouise studied drama, voice and dance and performed professionally in Children’s Theatre for many years. She has a long history of teaching the Dramatic Arts as part of the Bachelor of Education at a number of Universities including the Institute of Koorie Education (IKE) at Deakin and she majored in drama in her post graduate studies focussing on “Embodied pedagogy”. Louise believes that the dramatic arts should be embedded in the curriculum every day.

Children have an innate desire to create, express and perform. As educators, we have a unique opportunity to build on their natural curiosities, spark their imaginations and provide opportunities for verbal and physical expression. When children are active participants they make discoveries about how their body moves, how their voice works and the connections they have with culture and community. Drama is often an area that can be intimidating for those with no background in this. Louise believes if you can make a sound or move any part of your body, you can be involved in drama.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Increase confidence in using a variety of puppets

• Explore the value of drama and playing with language

• Discover simple raps, rhymes, props and resources

• Develop confidence in the delivery of stories and literature.

INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGIES FOR UNDER 3’S – ENVIRONMENTS, ROUTINES AND INTERACTIONS

Facilitator: Community Child Care and Melanie Turkopp Melanie is currently the Educational Leader at Elwood Children’s Centre in Melbourne. She has over 27 years’ experience, including working in the Middle East and teaching at Swinburne University. Through her years of experience she has gained greater perspectives about the variety of ways that children learn. In recent times, Mel has partnered with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and Anne Stonehouse to produce two early years’ pedagogy resources.

Infants and toddlers are capable and competent learners, who actively construct their own learning. To support this rich learning and growth that occurs for children under 3, educators need to take a critical look at the environments, routines and interactions afforded to children. It is important to take the time to be thoughtful, engaging and innovative in pedagogy and practice. This session will look at practical and interesting ways of supporting young children’s emerging sense of agency and confidence.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Explore new ideas to ensure routines are child focused

• Identify practical examples of curriculum ideas and activities, including intentional teaching techniques

• Explore moving beyond the notion of ‘managing’ or ‘guiding’ behaviours

• Identify physical environments that support excellent pedagogy and practice for under 3’s.

The Victorian Inclusion Agency (VIA) is here to provide holistic, ongoing guidance to all education and care services across Victoria to support the inclusion of all children. As many of you will be aware, we are a consortium made up of Community Child Care Association, Yooralla and KU Children’s Services and are funded by the Australian Government under their Inclusion Support Programme (ISP). For more information about the programme go to www.education.gov.

Introduction to the Victorian Inclusion Agency

from Leanne Giardina

15 16

au>inclusion support programme.

VIA is dedicated to ensuring that all Victorian children can actively and meaningfully participate in an education and care service of their family’s choice. We are excited about our partnerships with VAEAI, Fka and AMES, that will help us continue to build our own capacity, knowledge and local connections with Aboriginal communities and migrant and refugee communities across Victoria.

As many of our staff have transitioned from the previous program, you may already know the local Inclusion Professional who is allocated to support your service. If not, you can be reassured that all our Inclusion Professionals have deep inclusion knowledge and an array of experience to mentor and guide services inclusive practice. Their role is to provide you with whatever support resources and guidance you need to further develop your inclusive practice and ensure every child in your service has a strong sense of belonging.

We look forward to working with you,

17 18

Our assistance is offered, in response to a particular inclusion issue you are facing or a more proactive approach to building your general inclusion readiness, in a number of ways:

Visiting your service and observing your environment and exploring with your leaders and educators: • What great things you are already doing to include children and reach

out to your local community• What barriers and challenges you might be facing including a child or

children into your service• What other strategies you could implement to support inclusion,

including accessing the Inclusion Development Fund and our Specialist Equipment Library

• How you’re going to document this inclusion planning.

Attending or facilitating networks of local education and care services or groups of services owned or managed by one organisation to:

• Better understand the ISP and how services can access support• Explore what inclusion means in practice, how it relates to the National

Quality Standards and Learning Frameworks • How to use your quality improvement processes to build on your

inclusive practice. We will also be out and about making contact with other local family support services, ensuring they know about the programme and ensuring we can point you in the right direction when you or the families in your care need support from other agencies.

If you want to contact us for some support to build on your inclusive practice, you can look on our website at www.viac.com.au and click on the map to find the nearest office and their contact details or call 1800 177 017 or email us on [email protected].

Reflecting On Inclusive Practice

Here are some questions you can use to reflect on your service’s inclusive practice. You could use them yourself or in an educator meeting, anything from a room meeting to a whole staff meeting or a larger educator gathering.

1. Where is the best place for you to document this work you are doing? Is it in a reflective journal, in your QIP documentation, in your philosophy review or in your Strategic Inclusion Plan?

2. What does inclusion mean for you? Personally and in relation to your service?

3. What is the value of inclusive practice?4. Do you have a story that illustrates your great inclusive practice?5. What would your service look like if it reflected the local community?

- Staff and children and families. How much do you know about the demographics of your community? How might you find out more? What might be stopping a diversity of families accessing your service?

6. How do you currently support each individual child and family develop a sense of belonging in your service? What else could you do?

7. What strategies will you put in place and how will you know when they have worked? Don’t forget to include this work into some of your current planning.

Do you have a reflective question that you would like us to share with other services? If so we are keen to add it to our resources, please email us at [email protected].

INTENTIONAL TEACHING – INTENTIONAL ENVIRONMENTS

Facilitator: Debbie Cole Debbie works as an early and middle childhood trainer and consultant. She is a qualified kindergarten teacher and her other qualifications include a Master of Education. She has extensive experience in children’s services, including management of the children’s program at Gowrie Victoria (North Carlton). She has worked as a teacher and course coordinator at Swinburne University, where she developed extensive course resources for OSHC.

Intentional teaching plays a key role in enhancing children’s learning and development. When educators are ‘deliberate, purposeful and thoughtful in their decisions and actions’ (p.15, EYLF), they develop programs with intentionality and support children to achieve outcomes. Intentional educators create rich learning environments and use a range of teaching strategies to extend children’s knowledge, skills and dispositions. They are responsive to children’s interests and make teaching and learning a meaningful experience. This session will support educators to reflect on their current curriculum and pedagogy and consider how they can be more intentional in their planning and practice.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Deepen their understanding of intentional teaching and its role in children’s learning

• Develop skills in planning intentional learning environments

• Explore a range of teaching strategies to extend learning

• Reflect on current practice and consider ways to improve intentionality.

MUSIC...MAKE IT MEANINGFUL

Facilitator: Emma KeftEmma has extensive experience in the education and care sector. Many know Emma from her work as a passionate advocate and consultant over the years at CCC. Emma is also an amazing musician; reading and writing music before she could spell her name. As a multi-instrumentalist, she considers herself a natural musician. Emma’s versatility as a musician and performer has seen her on stage performing and off in many an orchestra pit; also playing the pubs, clubs and festivals around Australia, as well as circuits of Canada and Europe. Who knows she might even bring her ukulele!

“Music exists distinctively in every culture and is a basic expression of the human experience” (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2016). Engagement with creative arts provides an avenue for children to express themselves and communicate with others, and music is a universal language for making meaning. Childhood is a time for children’s play as a process for learning. If rich music environments in education and care settings have the potential to impact whole child development, how do we create meaningful music experiences for young children to be exposed to and playfully engage with?

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Learn about the impact of music on brain function and development

• Explore diverse times, places, cultures and contexts for music

• Develop skills to provide meaningful musical environments and experiences for young children.

Creating a sense of belonging for children is as much about connecting to place as it is about connecting to people. A place based approach offers many possibilities to educators designing learning experiences for children. Central to this approach is a belief that children have rights as our youngest citizens. Building partnerships with community enables children to learn through ‘many doors’ and not only understand the ‘pulse of their future lives’ (Nimmo) but learn how their ideas can shape the here and now. This short course will support services to develop strong and diverse collaborative partnerships within their local communities that link to children’s lives, interests and learning. We will re-imagine the connection with community as part of early and middle years pedagogy and identify possible pathways for curriculum development.

The course includes:

• Four learning days• Professional readings• Support to design and implement a small curriculum project at your service• Opportunity to connect with facilitators and other participants throughout the

course for support and inspiration!

Participants will have the opportunity to explore:

• The place of community in quality children’s services and in realising outcomes for children

• Developing curriculum linked to children’s lives and learning in their local community

• Planning and documentation of community curriculum for individuals and groups

• Strengthening and diversifying community connections • Building social capital for and with children, families and communities.
