Dear Reader,
2014 marks our 27th year in business practicing the art
and science of organic land care. Like you, we continue to
wrestle with the challenges of growing the natural way in the
face of climate change and pressures from industry, but
we are successful because we know how to make it work.
Every season we learn a great deal from our interactions with colleagues and folks
like yourself as well as our experiences in the field. We incorporate these nuggets of
wisdom into improvement of our products and services with the goal of providing
you with best tools available for great results growing organically.
This year we are pleased to offer our Soil Foodweb Lab services to the public and
professionals. You’ll find details about these services inside this catalog and on our
web site. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of testing your soil and vital
biological inputs like compost and compost teas. It can make all the difference in
creating a positive growing experience for you or your customers.
We are also making our line of “Organic Solutions” soil amendment and fertility
products available for purchase. These all natural products are regionally sourced
and meet NOFA Organic Land Care guidelines. This also includes our “VermaGrow”
products, produced from our premium vermi-compost. Years of effort have gone
into making these products the best on the market and I am confident you’ll be
pleased with the results.
Lastly, we are conducting a series of workshops growing tomorrow’s “Organic Pros”
to help others succeed growing organically or providing organic land care services.
Let us know what you think. We’d love your feedback on how we’re doing.
Hope to see you in the field,

HARRINGTON’S SOIL CHEMISTRY & FOODWEB LABORATORY
Yes, we’re preaching to the choir, but healthy soil is the most critical component for
success with organics. You need interpretations with a balanced perspective that
include biological and chemical aspects, which are not standard in soil tests.
Here we perform analysis on soil chemistry, soil biology, and plant tissue. It provides
an independent way to monitor the chemical and biological composition of your
soils as well as the biological products we use or recommend for fertility.
As seasoned Soil Foodweb Advisors we measure these critical aspects and provide
recommendations specific to your organic program so you can make informed
decisions to replenish nutrients, correct poor soils, and improve plant health.
SOIL CHEMISTRY ANALYSES**
All chemistry tests include the following: organic matter, soil moisture content,
pH, CEC, % base saturation, N (as nitrate), & electrical conductivity
A) Basic Chemistry
Macro-Nutrients: Ca, P, K, Mg, S
B) Basic Plus & Plant Tissue Analysis
Macro-Nutrients above plus trace minerals: Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, B
C) Complete Chemistry
Includes all Basic and Basic Plus analyses. The primary benefit of the “Complete
Chemistry” is that we use two methods to determine the amount of nutrients in the
soil. The first informs us of what is in “reserve” and the second presents nutrient
levels in “plant-available” form—an indicator of biological activity.
**All Soil Chemistry Tests include interpretations and recommendations for organic programs.
Ammonium N% available at an additional cost.

Our Lab for Soil, Compost, & Tea Analysis
SOIL FOODWEB BIOLOGY ANALYSIS
We are very fortunate to work with Dr. Elaine Ingham who has spent over 30 years
studying and developing the methodology for analyzing soil health. Her painstaking
work has identified optimal ratios for soil microbes in compost, compost teas, crops,
landscape plants, trees, and shrubs. Using these methods, we can analyze your soil,
compost, and compost tea samples for microbial diversity and make specific
recommendations based on a comparison with optimal ranges.
A) Qualitative Package
Determines the presence or absence of microbes (bacteria, fungi, ciliates, amoebae,
and flagellates) and rates them from Not Present to Very High Levels. Also includes
E.coli, pH, electrical conductivity, and percent organic matter. While specific
recommendations cannot be determined from this assay, it will give you a general
overview of what is present/absent from your soil, compost, or compost tea.
B) Basic Foodweb*
Quantifies the biomass ratios of total/active bacteria and total/active fungi. This test
provides us the information to develop a basic program to adjust bacterial and
fungal imbalances. Active bacteria/fungi are those that are currently cycling
nutrients; total bacteria/fungi include active and dormant microbes.
C) Complete Foodweb*
Quantifies total and active bacteria, total and active fungi, and presence/absence of
protozoa. Eventually we will also offer nematode identification. Nematodes are a
large group of tiny worms that can either benefit plants or cause disease. A diverse
array of nematodes is a good indicator of healthy soils.
D) Complete Foodweb + Mycorrhizae*
This test is available for soil samples only, not for compost or compost tea. It
includes all assays in the Complete Foodweb plus mycorrhizal colonization. This test
determines what percentage of the plant roots are colonized and can also detect
signs of disease or other damage.

Anyone practicing organic land care knows that the
single most important factor in making nutrients plant available is having healthy soil
biology to cycle nutrients. We have spent decades refining our methods of
producing various types of composts and soil blends to enhance fertility. The end
result is a versatile group of source materials you can use to create healthy and
diverse soil foodweb communities in soils, extracts, and teas.
Today these serve as the foundation of our plant health care programs. Whether you
are amending potting mixes, top-dressing beds, or making teas and extracts, you will
find our line of vermi-products one of your best assets.
* We regularly test our products for quality control with a goal of continuously improving
the biologic diversity for the best results in the field. Let us know how its working for you!
Harrington’s Liquid Compost Extract (LCE) 55, 275, 2000 gals.
We specialize in the creating/blending liquid compost extracts. Using biological
inoculants, microbial foods, and trace elements we make complete bio-sprays for
custom application to lawns, landscapes, farms, pastures, and other crops.
In the extraction process, the beneficial microbes in composts we use are dislodged
and go into a solution. The micro-organisms in the LCE live in a dormant stage until
they are “activated” in response to external stimuli such as added microbial foods,
plant root exudates, or ideal temperature conditions.
Liquid Compost Extract (LCE) has advantages over Active Aerated Compost Tea
(AACT). Specialized equipment enables us to produce LCE in large volumes in a short
time frame. It has the same diversity of micro-organisms in AACT, but since they are
dormant, LCE can be stored for longer periods of time before it is applied.
Make your life easier by taking the guesswork out of making your own teas.
We can deliver consistent quality product to your location for use as you need it.
You can “activate” the solution in batches as needed for foliar applications as
Active Aerated Compost Tea (AACT) .
