Coxsackie viruses were named after the US city; Coxsackie in New York where they had been first identified in 1948. Coxsackie viruses belong to the group of enteroviruses and are further divided into two subgroups (A and B) which comprise differ-ent serotypes. Cells infected with Coxsackie virus are used as the substrate for the IFA test. Different serotypes can be quick-ly and reliably identified with a specificity of almost 100% and a sensitivity of approximately 90%. IFA is well suited for the detection of specific IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies during both the early and the late stage of infection.
