“To create delighted customers by providing exceptional products and service.” - Bonne Posma, Owner
About American Traction SystemsAmerican Traction Systems has been providing power solutions to a variety of industries since our inception in 2008. We expanded the technology developed for underground mining vehicles by our sister company, Saminco International (established in 1992), and applied it to above ground applications where we have continued to develop our product lines to new industries and services. We recently received the SIL2 Certificate of Assessment for the EN50128:2011standards for our propulsion software installed on an ATS Rail MoW propulsion system operating in the UK. We have also received certificates from ABS, Lloyds of London, and the U. S. Coast Guard. For Rapid Transit Systems, we have successfully passed electromagnetic compatibility testing for Radiated Interference, Inductive Interference, Conductive Interference, and CAB Signal Interference.
We specialize in the design and manufacture of high power AC, DC, and Permanent Magnet Motor Control products primarily for traction and propulsion applications. Our solid state electric vehicle traction controllers are powered by batteries, diesel-electric, fuel cells or power centers for passenger vessels, including on and off road electric vehicles, locomotives, fuel cell buses and automobiles, hybrid trucks and buses, as well as streetcars, airline ground support vehicles and electric powered vehicles of all types.
We are dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional products and services designed to the highest standards of quality, through a unique blend of high caliber engineers and technicians, a sound understanding of basic engineering principles, and an ability to develop innovative solutions. We have the flexibility to design custom solutions by working directly with our customers to determine their exact needs.
While standard manufacturing is our mainstay, constant research and development keeps ATS at the forefront. We are based in Fort Myers, FL with on-premise departments including board design, software and hardware engineering design, CAD, manufacturing, panel wiring, testing and quality control. We are able to begin and complete a project entirely in-house with excellent test facilities and 1MVA of available power for full load testing of all products. Installation, commissioning, and training services are also available.

ATS Marine Diesel-Electric Propulsion Systems
Marine Diesel-Electric Propulsion System
Features• The ATS system allows one diesel engine/generator to operate two large propellers. The second engine/generator
provides redundancy and extra power when needed.• This eliminates light load or “wet stacking” conditions detrimental to diesel engines - ensuring extended engine life. It
also cuts energy consumption at vessel speeds typical for inland water ways and long range cruising. • The “hotel” power on board is provided by inverters fed by either the diesel engine/generators or a large battery bank,
elminating an auxiliary generator. • Our system is compatible with all modern subsystems for the vessel’s propulsion control and monitoring:
• Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) integration• Generator load management systems • Power conversion and drive components• AC, DC or Permanent Magnet propulsion motors • Direct drive or azimuth type
propulsion and thruster motors• Main electrical switchboards • Excitation control of main
propulsion generators • Auxiliary generators• Multiple battery technologies• Microturbines• Fuel cells
Benefits
• Better fuel economy by decoupling the engine speed from the propeller speed which allows operation at the most efficient load point over a wide speed range.
• With engines decoupled from the propeller, the diesel generator can be mounted in any location with complete vibration isolation from the hull.
• Minimized pollution due to highly efficient operation of the diesel engine over a wide range.• Longer engine life because only one engine is operating under normal cruise speed conditions.• Operating time is balanced between the two engines while offering redundancy of engine availability for enhanced
safety.• Eliminates the auxiliary generator for house loads and other traditional generators, their controls and cooling systems as
well.• Total elimination of gear box(es) between the engines and the propellers thereby avoiding hardware cost, maintenance
and mechanical losses. Eliminates the tedious task of aligning the engine, gearbox and propeller shaft.• Elimination of mechanical shifting between forward and reverse. Instead, forward and reverse is quietly and gently
performed by reversing the rotational direction of the electric propulsion motor.• Ability to operate the propellers at constant speed rather than operating the diesel engine(s) at fixed throttle. The
disadvantage of the latter often causes undesirable vessel speed acceleration when moving off a wave top in a following sea thereby dangerously forcing the bow down into the wave ahead of the vessel.
• Operating the propellers at constant speed by nature saves fuel because the physical load on the propellers decrease when moving “down hill” from a wave top. The control system instantly reacts and reduces diesel engine load and fuel consumption. Similar to a car operating in “cruise control mode” going down hill.

The Hornblower Alcatraz Hybrid Ferry
Marine Hybrid Propulsion Systems
The Hornblower Hybrid is the first multi-hulled Coast Guard Approved hybrid passenger vessel operating in the United States. Launched in 2008, the ship is propelled by two 350HP AC Induction Motors that are coupled directly to the propellers. ATS supplies the inverters controlling these motors.
The ATS inverters are powered by 320VDC battery banks or Tier 2 marine diesel generators. While the boat is idle at the dock, the ship is powered by quiet, clean battery power. When underway, the ship can operate from the batteries or the diesel generators. The captain monitors the energy needs of the vessel and selects the most efficient energy source.
The American Traction Systems Propulsion Inverter is able to seamlessly switch between 480VAC supplied by the generator and the 320VDC battery supply while the ship is underway.

Marine
Typical Hybrid MarinePropulsion System
Port and Starboard Generator and Propulsion Rack Assemblies Generator module: Power is supplied to the common DC bus from diesel-driven induction generators. Each diesel engine is coupled to an induction motor of matching power capability. Induction generator converters regulate the electrical output to the 750V DC bus by operating at negative slip in order to absorb power from the diesel engine. Operation of the generator is possible over a speed range of 600 rpm to 1800 rpm.
The induction generator converters are capable of bi-direction power flow. They are used to crank the engine to a speed slightly above idle prior to fuel flow to the engine. This achieves a smoke-free start. The normal starter motors are used only if the propulsion batteries are discharged or if shore power is not available. They also operate as engine brakes if a crash-stop reversal of the propulsion motors is necessary.
AC Propulsion ModuleThe AC induction propulsion motors operate at a speed commanded by the control head located at the bridge. The propulsion inverter converts power provided by the 750V DC bus to AC power of suitable voltage and frequency to achieve the required propeller speed. The propulsion system continually monitors the load requirements to assure the total capacity of all power sources is not exceeded. If the maximum power limit of all of the sources is reached, the commands from the control head are modified proportionally to remain within the system limits. When moored in a strong current, it is possible for the propulsion inverters to absorb power from the rotation of the propellers and deliver electrical power to the DC bus.
Power Conversion/Distribution Assembly Power Conversion Chopper ModuleThe DC to DC Chopper can be used to interface fuel or solar cells to the 750V DC bus. The operating voltage of the fuel/solar cell is chosen so that it is always lower than 750V allowing total control of the current that is drawn from the source. If the vessel is equipped with solar panels, the power management system assigns the highest priority to this source.
Each DC to DC Chopper is connected to its power source by three inductors and a soft-charge circuit. The inductors smooth the current flow in the source and the soft-charge circuit prevents the large inrush of current during initial charging of the 750V bus capacitors.
Bi-Directional Dual Chopper Module (DC to DC)The Dual DC to DC Choppers are used to interface 600V energy storage batteries to the 750V DC bus and have bi-directional current capability up to 400A. The converters are able to transition smoothly from discharge to charge according to the needs of the power management system. The dual DC to DC Choppers are connected to battery disconnect panels and a soft charge contactor.
Dual Inverter ModuleA module consisting of two inverters (250kW each) provides on-board utility power at 60Hz and also controls the bow thruster motor. The utility power inverter can also be back-fed through a 480V shore supply connection. The cost of energy supplied through the shore power connection is typically only 25% of the cost of energy supplied by diesel engines.
In this arrangement, the inverter output is not active, but the diodes of the IGBT modules function as a passive rectifier supplying up to 150kW to the DC bus for battery charging and auxiliary loads.
Capacitors (Five modules) Isolation Panels (one each located on port and starboard propulsion racks) Pre-Charge Panel (located behind modules on center rack)

Streetcar AC Traction System ATS Part # Various (See your Sales Rep for specific ordering information )
The ATS Streetcar AC Traction System is a unique system consisting of two independent converters with one inverter per motor and each motor driving one axle. Typical AC motors are connected in parallel forcing wheel diameter to be matched to a tolerance of 1% or better. This is equivalent to about 5.5mm. Even a 1% mismatch can significantly unbalance the motor loads and cause motor heating problems. Specifications from many customers stipulate that any comination of new or worn wheels must be tolerated. The ATS system resolves this issue.
Features• The ATS System uses one inverter per motor for the following advantages:
• Eliminates the requirement to match wheel diameters.• When wheel slip occurs, traction power to only one axle is reduced.• Inverter faults that do not cause a bus short circuit allow power to be maintained on 3 axles instead of 2. Examples of
such faults are loss of a speed sensor, failure of a current sensor or failure of a gate drive circuit.• Each converter contains:
• EMC filter components• Main contactor and precharge circuit• Line filter• Two inverters controlling one motor each• Brake chopper controlling one dynamic brake resistor assembly• CAN-bus control and diagnostics
• Master Controllers operate vehicle and are interlocked so that only one controller can produce active outputs at any time.
• Master Controller uses PWM signals to control traction and brake demands.• The Auxiliary Power Unit consists of two identical sections each capable of operating independently and meeting the
entire power demand of the car. It includes the following components:• Input contactor• Damped input filter (no precharge circuit)• Medium-frequency inverter (variable-frequency resonant)• Medium frequency transformer • Rectifier• Three-phase 460V, 60Hz inverter• Sine output filter

Hermes Traction Inverter
Product DescriptionThe Traction Inverter is designed to control permanent magnet or AC induction motors and is suitable for propulsion and auxiliary motor applications.
Adaptive Torque ControlThe motor control algorithm, Adaptive Torque Control (ATC) is a more accurate Field-Oriented Control (FOC) capable of operating in a wide range of power factors. ATC optimizes performance (torque and power) by accounting for a varying supply voltage, motor inductances, motor resistances, motor temperature, motor speed, and slip. In induction motors, this enables operation at or near the breakdown torque of the motor and in PM motors, it utilizes the synchronous reluctance effect to maximize torque.
ATC uses models based on the physics of the motor — not lookup tables. With 150+ programmable parameters for setup and tuning, the inverter can operate many different motors.
Variable Switching FrequencyBy continuously varying the switching frequency proportional to speed, the inverter achieves an optimal balance of switching losses in the inverter and current ripples in the motor. Particularly at lower speeds, the reduced PWM frequency yields improved efficiency as shown in the red area of the following chart.
Hardware Description• Double isolation between power components and
control interface• 12V emergency stop input• 1 NTC input• 2 RTD inputs• 2 12V analog inputs• 8 logic inputs• Normally open/closed fault outputs• RS-232 serial interface for programming and

ATS was involved in the early development of the hybrid fuel cell bus programs. Starting in 1992, prior to the formation of ATS, our Saminco team provided Ballard Power with an efficient low-loss AC Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Traction System for the early Fuel Cell Bus programs. We were instrumental in the development of the Georgetown University Hydrogen Bus, and in 2003, our products were chosen to be part of the C.U.T.E. pioneering demonstration projects for fuel cell bus fleets in Europe working with Ballard and Mercedes Benz. More than 100 buses were put into operation during these programs.
ATS took part in the Allison Electric Drive E5 Hybrid Bus program in 2000.
