We also carry the widest selection of traditional mosaic

tools and supplies, most imported from Italy. Whether

using lime putty, bone glue and tarlatan, we have

everything you need to create your mosaic artwork.

Smalti Facts

The word “smalti” translates

into English as “enamel”.

And that is what smalti is –

glass powder made into a

paste, then poured out,

pressed and fired to become

vitreous enamel.

Smalti begins as a round pizza,

about 3/8” thick. From there,

it can be cut into any size.

di Mosacio stocks pizzas as well as two sizes of traditional smalti:

The Normal cut, aka “A” cut, is what most artists are familiar with. The normal cut shows

the interior of the pizza and colors are very uniform from

piece to piece. The normal cut is used with the riven, or cut

edge up. This produces the traditional smalti look with light

glinting off of the cut faces.

The Ravenna cut, aka “B” cut, is generally a square or rectanglular shape. You also get the

irregular edges of the pizza. The Ravenna cut shows the face of the pizza so you can expect

some variety in the color patterns.

Smalti Facts

We also stock two other types of smalti:

Piastrina which has a flat surface and is

about 3/16” thick . It is also cut in very

regular, square shapes and is similar in size

to manufactured vitreous glass tiles

Contorni is also flat but even thinner at 1/8”

thick. Contorni is typically used to outline

shapes in a mosaic.

Besides the opaque smalti we also stock transparent

smalti, called “trasparenti” in Italian. Trasparenti is

available in all the same sizes and cuts as opaque

smalti.

The following table provides guidelines for sizes and quantities for the various cuts of smalti:

Length Width Thickness Pieces per ½ lb Lbs per SF

Normal 5/8” 3/8” 1/4” 90-100 3

Ravenna 1”-3” 1”-3” 3/8” Varies 4-5

Piastrina 3/4" 3/4” 3/16” 90-95 2-3/4

Pizza 10” – 13” in diameter 3/8” About 1/8 pizza 4-5

Contorni ~3/4” ~3/4” 1/8” 1/4 lb will outline 90 linear inches

Stone

We stock 98 different colors of stone. The standard cut is 3/4” long x 3/8” wide

x 3/8” thick. We also carry a select variety of stone in rods which are 10”-12” long

x 3/4" wide x 3/8” thick.

For planning purposes, you should allow 5-1/2 to 6 pounds of stone per square foot.

www.dimosaico.com

Gold

We stock 33 different types of gold. There are nine different colors and three different textures –

smooth, antique and undulated (wavy). Gold tiles are 3/8” long x 3/8” wide and are 1/4" thick

except for the Doppio which is 3/8” thick. Allow about 3-1/2 pounds per square foot.

A common question we get about gold is how resistant is the gold

to damage? The gold leaf is covered by a thin layer of clear glass so

it is not exposed. And for harsher environments, such as floors, use

the clear base tiles with the thick base facing up. Green or clear

Helpful Tools

Need help figuring out how much material to buy? We provide a couple of online tools on our

website to help you out. Both of these tools can be accessed from the Store Home page.

The first is our Smalti Calculator. Enter

the dimensions of the area you want to

cover and it will calculate the physical size

and give you the amount of smalti, gold or

stone that you need to order to cover the

area.

We also offer an Area Calculator. Import the

image you are working on and use the toolbar

to set the scale, trace the image and calculate

the area.

Note – this is a web service we have linked to

our website. The provider of the service

charges a fee to use the service. The basic fee

is $1.99 per 24 hours.
