and meeting it in faith. Lord forgive us for rejecting the diversity of your world and its people, its wonder and its change. For loving ourselves so little that we box ourselves in with rules you’ve never made. Help us to se that in Christ we are free. Free not to trample on the freedom of others, but free to be ourselves, within the endless bounds of love, to grow into your image and live.

From Our Theatre Correspondents Once again Caythorpe School entertained us all with their Christmas show. This started with a lovely nativity play acted by the smallest in the school. A Christ-mas show would never be the same without them. Their seriousness in playing out this perfect story was just a dream to see. We loved and forgave the little angels whose little halos sometimes slipped. We sympathised with the Sheperd who fell asleep when he counted his sheep. Their smiles and singing made it all a just a wonderful start to our Christmas celebrations. Having set the scene, Percy the Park Keeper kept us all entertained and we fully understood his problem with all the animals wanting to snuggle up in his bed, rather like the Grandchildren when they come to stay. All the children seemed to be loving the acting and really got themselves into the scene. This was followed by a moving play based on the first world war and the Christ-mas day when fighting stopped and both the German and English soldiers min-gled together. We are sure that this taught the youngsters a great deal and per-haps, like the rest of us watching, were left with a deep sense of the futility of war. The ending of this play was a moving sequence of pictures of the children dressed up in uniforms with war scenes in the background. Finally came a version of Narnia with most impressive acting from four of the older children. In and out of the wardrobe they went going from one world to another and of course a great Azlan with his great wisdom. The older children certainly enjoyed playing out this story as they all looked as though they were having a good time. The final battle was memorable. Finally, we must say a thank you to the staff who worked so hard in producing such a good evening. You must all be exhausted but we are sure we can say on behalf of all who saw the result that your labours were worth it. Happy Christmas to all the children and all the staff.

A MESSAGE FROM RACHEL FOLLOWING THE CAYTHORPE & FRIESTON OLD FRIENDS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY The Caythorpe and Frieston Old Friends’ Christmas party was held last Monday in the Village Hall and as always we had a fantastic afternoon. Patrick provided the music and Sean the voice, finishing with Auld Lang Syne with everyone join-ing in. Helpers Caroline, Jenny and Iris were invaluable, there is always so much to do during the party and Peter is the world’s best wine waiter (even minus his false moustache!) Of course no party is a success without the guests and all of you made the afternoon worthwhile. Thank you to everyone who helped me and to everyone who came to the party and supported me. I would also like to thank the various businesses and individuals from both vil-lages who supported me financially because without that the party could not go ahead.

Old Friends’ Christmas Party For the second year I attended the Christmas 'knees up' for Old Friends in the village hall. It was a really fun afternoon with good food and wine served un-stintingly (I'm not sure how some folk got home!) and the service put some res-taurants to shame. The whole afternoon was almost worth becoming an OAP. I would have liked to propose a toast to the organiser and team of helpers but it was difficult to find a suitable window, but I do want to say publicly Thank You. One tiny caveat, the table arrangements this year were lovely for a small party of friends, but what about the singletons who came on their own and had to butt in on a threesome or whatever, it could be pretty off-putting unless one was very sure of one’s welcome. I would like to suggest a return to the original format or perhaps tables for eight, nine or ten where a stranger or shy person could feel less of an outsider. Thank you again organisers. Remembering those less fortunate than us. Letter from Zimbabwe

I reckon that these are the last days of TKM and ZPF. The darkest hour is always before dawn. We are all terrified at what they are going to destroy next........I mean they are actually ploughing down brick and mortar houses and one family with twin boys of 10 had no chance of salvaging anything when 100 riot police came in with AK47's and bull-dozers and demolished their beautiful house - 5 bedrooms and pine ceilings - because it was 'too close to the airport', so we are feeling extremely insecure right now. You know - I am aware that this does not help you sleep at night, but if you do not know - how can you help? Even if you put us in your own mental ring of light and send your guardian angels to be with us - that is a help -but I feel so cut off from you all knowing I cannot tell you what's going on here simply because you will feel uncomfort-able. There is no ways we can leave here so that is not an option. I ask that you all pray for us in the way that you know how, and let me know that you are thinking of us and sending out positive vibes... that's all. You can't just be in de-nial and pretend/believe it's not going on. To be frank with you, it's genocide in the making and if you do not believe me, read the Genocide Report by Amnesty International which says we are - IN level 7 - (level 8 is after it's happened and everyone is in denial). If you don't want me to tell you these things-how bad it is-then it means you have not dealt with your own fear, but it does not help me to think you are turning your back on our situation. We need you, please, to get the news OUT that we are all in a fearfully dangerous situation here. Too many people turn their backs and say - oh well, that's what happens in Africa This Government has GONE MAD and you need to help us publicize our plight---or how can we be rescued? It's a reality! The petrol queues are a reality, the pall of smoke all around our city is a reality, the thousands of homeless people sleeping outside in 0 Celsius with no food, water, shelter and bedding are a reality. Today a family ap-proached me, brother of the gardener's wife with two small children. Their home was trashed and they will have to sleep outside. We already support 8 adult people and a child on this property, and electricity is going up next month by 250% as is water. How can I take on another family of 4 -----and yet how can I turn them away to sleep out in the open? I am not asking you for money or a ticket out of here - I am asking you to FACE the fact that we are in deep and terrible danger and want you please to pass on our news and pictures. So PLEASE don't just press the delete button! Help best in the way that you know how. Do face the reality of what is going on here and help us SEND OUT THE WORD.. The more people who know about it, the more chance we have of the United Nations coming to our aid. Please don't ignore or deny what's happening. Some would like to be protected from the truth BUT then, if we are eliminated, how would you feel? 'If only we knew how bad it really was we could have helped in some way'. [I know we chose to stay here and that some feel we deserve what's coming to us] For now,--- we ourselves have food, shelter, a little fuel and a bit of money for

Page 15: Produced and Sponsored by St. Vincent’s Church, Caythorpe ...parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/58/Cay_News__Jan_09.pdf · When I was using the rectory photocopier for some

the next meal - but what is going to happen next? Will they start on our houses? All property is going to belong to the State now. I want to send out my Title Deeds to one of you because if they get a hold of those, I can't fight for my rights. Censorship!----We no longer have SW radio [which told us everything that was happening] because the Government jammed it out of existence - we don't have any re-porters, and no one is allowed to photograph. If we had reporters here, they would have an absolute field day. Even the pro-Government Herald has written that people are shocked, stunned, bewildered and blown mindless by the wanton destruction of many folks homes, which are supposed to be 'illegal' but for which a huge percentage actually do have licenses. Please! - do have some compassion and HELP by sending out the articles and personal reports so that something can/may be done. 'I am one. I cannot do everything, ---but I can do something.. And because I can-not do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do.'

CAYTHORPE – A PERSONAL VIEW IT GETS CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER

Janet Norman © What began as a leisurely stroll through Caythorpe, picking up snippets of infor-mation, and writing about them has developed into something else over which it seems, I have little control, take the saga of Caythorpe House, for example. When I started to explore the Caythorpe House complex several local people remonstrated with me that the proper title of the estate was ‘Holy Cross’. No matter how diligently I searched through archive records I could find no written trace of Holy Cross House, just Caythorpe House, so perhaps we need to turn our attention to the history of complex, and the first thing that springs to mind is the suggestion that the house was haunted. There is nothing new to ghost stories, they have been around for generations and it would be highly unusual for Caythorpe House not to have its own ghost. Indeed, prior to its immanent demolition a group of ghost busters actually spent a night in the decaying building, hoping to see the Grey Lady. So convinced were local people that the Standard (known today as the Sleaford Standard) actually sent a reporter and photographer to conduct the experiment on the night of, Fri-day 14th October 1966. But what do we know about this apparition? The Grey Lady, according to a person who actually saw her, said she wore a transparent floor length greyish-white gown. According to the eye witness, the phantom came from the kitchen, crossed to the main staircase, floated up to the first floor, carried on along the corridor then disappeared into one of the bed-rooms. The person who gave this description was actually living in one of the flats at the time, and remained there until the building was condemned. But that is not the only reference to a phantom, there is an even more reliable example of an incident which occurred during the 1920s. This time the person who confronted the ghost was dressing for dinner in one of the principle bedrooms when they became aware of a sudden draught of cold air entering the room. This was followed by the vague aroma of lavender which caused the dresser to pause, and half turn, in that second he saw a lady. She seemed to gazing at something, or someone, totally unaware of his presence, then, she moved effortlessly across the room and disappeared. These two sight-ings appeared during the twentieth century but that does not preclude earlier visi-tations and might have a bearing on why local people decided to hedge their bets and gave Caythorpe House the unofficial title of ‘Holy Cross’ in order to protect themselves from unwanted interference during a supernatural event? What we have been told, and archive records support this fact that sometime during the nineteenth century the farm was occupied by a young farmer and his family who tragically lost young children whilst living at the farm. Could the ghost have been have been the unhappy mother, still restlessly wandering

through the house, in search of her babies? Yet another story suggests a woman was murdered at the farmhouse and that her spirit was forever searching for release from her torment. However, no re-cords exist to substantiate this story but it would have been highly unlikely that a house which occupied such a premier position in the village did not have a fasci-nating, or creepy yarn attached to it, just to give it character. Why is it that as soon as I assume everything of relevance to Caythorpe House has been covered than I receive a phone call from another long time resident of Caythorpe, who tells me that while I might assume the whole story has been cov-ered, there is more, quite a lot more to be revealed about Caythorpe House, so 2009 looks like another fascinating year doesn’t it?

St Vincent’s Church Christmas Tree Festival Congratulations and thanks to all who organised The Christmas Tree Festival in the church. The Church looked glorious inside, and with added bonus of a warming cuppa and cake all who visited had a great treat. The final musical event on Sunday night was superb - we have hidden talents in the village and special praise must go to Stuart for all his hard work putting it together. Even if he missed out the wife’s reading!

Next year Handel’s Messiah please!

Caythorpe & District W.I - December. A bitterly cold evening gave the Institute's Christmas meal an appropriately sea-sonal flavour. However, the atmosphere at the Red Lion at Caythorpe quickly warmed chilled bones. Sue Case thanked host John Cork and his staff for an ex-cellent meal and friendly service. A collection was made for Lincolnshire Search and Rescue following a talk and demonstration given earlier in the year by and his search dog Holly. The January meeting will be a social evening organised by the membership rather than the committee. We meet every second Thursday in the month at Cay-thorpe Village Hall. We enjoy a wide range of talks and demonstrations plus out-ings, theatre visits and walks. New members and guests are welcome to join us at any of our meetings. If you are new to the district it is a great way to get to know people and quickly feel part of the community.

SEEN IN THE GARDEN The birds have come back into the garden now the weather has turned colder as there is not the food elswhere. We never seem to stop topping up the feeders. One feeder is near the beech hedge and is obviously a favourite with the spar-rows. Watching them the other day they were darting out from the safety of the hedge, grabbing some seed and back in again. There are about a dozen of them. The Sparrowhawk seems to visit regularly. Talking of Sparrowhawks whom we now think of as common birds, it is difficult to remember that only thirty years ago they were nearly extinct in this country. Gamekeepers treated them as vermin interfering with game birds but it was the organo-phosphorus pesticides like dieldrin which nearly finished them off par-ticularly in highly agricultural areas like Lincolnshire. Fortunately, this was spot-ted in time and these products were phased out. They have made a terrific come-back. Some may argue if taking so much trouble to conserve our small birds is worth it if these raptors are going to snatch them up. A recent article in Bird-watch points to studies that have shown that the presence of Sparrowhawks does not significantly affect small bird numbers. They are, after all, part of our envi-ronment and help to preserve good breeding stock by weeding out the weaker ones. Last month, I commented on the serious reduction of many species of small birds particularly the House Sparrow. They have been in decline all over Europe, in Britain by 68% since 1977. It is not entirely clear why but the loss has been par-ticularly severe in urban areas and it is believed that car pollution, paving over front gardens, loss of green spaces, replacement of natural shrubs with ornamen-tal ones reduces the supply of insects available. Sparrows need huge quantities of insects to survive and more importantly rear young. Recent research shows that chicks are hatching but not surviving to adulthood. I take comfort that if our gar-den is not as tidy as it might be, that is a good thing as there is more habitat for insects! Wishing you all the best for 2009

So near yet so far On 18 September, the second day, XXX corps began to make the progress ex-pected of them. Their tanks covered 20 miles in a few hours, hooking up with the Americans at one of the intact bridges near Grave. On the third day they reached

Nijmegen, where the Americans were still fighting in the streets in their efforts to reach the bridge across the mighty River Waal. Once they had taken Nijmegen bridge, only Arnhem would be left, and the north end at least was still in British hands. It seemed that Operation Market Garden might succeed. But they could not get across the bridge. General Horrocks, XXX corps commander, ordered Ameri-can troops to attack across the

River Waal, so that they could capture the German end. The attack was enor-mously costly. 'The bullets hitting the water looked like a hailstorm, kicking up little spouts of water. When we reached about the halfway point, then the mortar and artillery fire started falling. And when a boat was hit with an artillery shell or a mortar shell, it just disintegrated, and everybody was lost.' (Moffat Burriss) Half of Burriss's company was killed or wounded on the crossing. The survivors reached the far bank, and from there successfully stormed the Ni-jmegen bridge. At last the route to Arnhem was in Allied hands. However, it was too late for the British parachute battalion at the north end of the bridge. The Ger-mans had moved their tanks into the town, and one by one they were demolishing the houses in which the British were fighting. By now the paratroops had few anti-tank weapons, they had no food, and, crucially, they had little ammunition left. Major Tony Hibbert remembers the German tanks were now devastatingly effective.

'We really had nothing we could do to them, and they drove up and down the street, firing high explosive into the side of the building, to create the gap, and then firing smoke shells through that. The phosphorus from the smoke shells burned us out. By about 8 o'clock, on Wednesday evening, the fires got out of control and of course we had by this time about 300 wounded in the cellars.' The Allied troops were forced to abandon their positions near the bridge, and to try and fight their way out. Three miles from Arnhem British paratroops were holding a pocket of land at the village of Oosterberck. By now XXX corps, com-manded by General Horrocks, was on the other side of the river from the air-borne troops. They could not, however, cross. German artillery controlled the river. Horrocks decided to evacuate the British survivors; only some 2,500 eventually made the crossing. The Parachute division had left behind nearly 1,500 dead, and more than 6,500 prisoners, many badly wounded. Operation Market Garden had failed. It would be another four months before the Allies crossed the Rhine again and captured the German industrial heartland. The war dragged on, costing the lives of many thousands of civilians and servicemen. Thanks you for reading these stories. The Arnhem Committee is now up and run-ning with seven new members. The first fund-raising event will be a Valentine’s Ball. For further info, please see the advert in this newsletter. If you are inter-ested in joining the Arnhem Committee, please contact Doreen on 272848 or see Marcella in the Waggon.

When the fire service attended the last three fires on the site water had to be pumped from the A607 crossroads. Parish Council has been asked to support a request to provide a pavement either around or across Frieston top green. Parents of children walking to and from the village are concerned for their safety when walking on the narrow roads. Any-one with views on this matter, please contact Mr Fleming, the parish clerk. Finally, the Parish Council express their appreciation to all who help and support the Village Hall, the Playing Field, the Church and many other committees and organisations in the village. Without this voluntary input the village would be a poorer place. As residents are welcome to attend the next Parish Council meeting on the 14th January. There is an open session before the start. Parish Council News An Environment Agency representative is to attend the next Parish Council meeting in the village hall at 7.15 p.m. on Wednesday 14th of January. The agency are to brief us on the commissioning of the incinerator at the Station Road site. The furnace is to burn waste wood to drive steam turbines to generate electricity. The Agency have licensed the plant and their remit is to see that the incinerator is run to the guidelines. Chimney emissions of several thousand cu-bic metres per hour have to be monitored. The Agency state that the black smoke coming from the chimney at the site before Christmas was diesel fumes as the furnace was lit to allow firebricks to dry out. Once the fumes and smoke have left the chimney, the local air quality becomes the responsibility of the South Kesteven District Council. Our District Council-lor Peter Martin-Mayhew is currently making enquiries on this subject. Noise also may be an issue when the plant is up and running. There are four turbines on site. There is a concern that on still days with no wind, the chimney emis-sions will build up in the vicinity of the village. Also the turbine noise 24 hours a day may become intrusive. The Parish Council have made representations to an application by Mid-UK Re-cycling of Station Road to increase the annual tonnage of materials brought to the site from 120,000 to 200,000. The County Council are undertaking a traffic survey on the road movements in the area. Fulbeck, Normanton and Carlton Scroop councils have also expressed concern at this application to increase the tonnage handled. The Parish Council made representations to the planning authority about the height and length of the rear shed being constructed on the site. We stated the building was too prominent on the landscape. Following a County Council plan-ning committee site meeting the authority allowed the building to be constructed as applied for. The Parish Council welcome the laying of the new water main from the A607 to the site. This will allow fire hydrants to be available for fire fighting purposes.
