There was the visual feast as our flower arrangers took so much time and trouble to decorate the church for harvest in such a beautiful way, my thanks to them. Thanks too must go to parents and children of Caythorpe School who brought a whole variety of produce to be given to The Passage in Grantham for their continuing service to those in real need of a warm meal, a wash and brush up. The Harvest Supper was another real treat for all who came, when we welcomed those who regularly give financially to St Vincent’s Church as our invited guests. Our thanks must go to those who provided, cooked or served the array of savoury and sweet delights for us to enjoy and that we certainly did. Our Sunday morning Eucharist rounded off the Harvest weekend with real home made bread used for our communion service, itself a thanksgiving which always ends with words of hope of the heavenly feast to which we are all invited, and in which we all may share at the end of our lives. *If you have considered helping to support your local church by regular giving we would be glad to hear from you and Roger Welby - Everard, our treasurer or Janet Avison will be more than happy to explain confidentially, the simple ways that this can be done. So we move from a month of thanksgiving into a month of remembrance. Our service of Commemoration of the Departed takes place in St Vincents’ Church - Caythorpe on the evening of 2 nd November at 6pm, when we remember those who have recently died, and to give thanks for those whose lives have meant so much to us, these are mainly family members but for some a long time friend or someone of influence in their lives are particularly thought of. You are all most welcome to this quiet service and I look forward to receiving from you, the names of those you might wish to be remem- bered. Our second opportunity for remembering is Remembrance Sunday on the 9 th November at 10am, as we indeed remember those from our village and families, who gave their lives in conflicts in and since the two World Wars of the last century. To those particu- larly who remember the fallen from either World War it will seem so much closer..... It is important to mark the day however, the 11 th hour of the 11 th day in the 11 th month, and so we gather once more at the War Memorial in Caythorpe village for a short act of worship this year falling on the following Tuesday morning. CAYTHORPE – A PERSONAL VIEW STILL MORE ON CAYTHORPE HOUSE…Janet Norman ©

Slowly, our exploration of Caythorpe House and its history has arrived at the area adja-cent to our the village hall, although, strictly speaking the hall as we know it today, did not exist until after the Second World War, when the then Parish Council purchased the building and converted it to be a focal point for village social activities. Even today there is evidence of what part the village hall played in the estate itself, and it is worth remembering that at its heyday the horse reigned supreme, until the motor car came on the scene at the turn of the last century, then everything changed. The village hall itself runs parallel to High Street, with an impressive window half-way along its length. Today the window is an ornamental feature of the building, in for-mer times it was the main entrance to the stable block situated behind the village hall. To those who use the village hall now it is difficult to imagine how it functioned at the turn of the last century because it is hard to picture horses being stabled in the main part of our village hall. However, according to the 1939 sales brochure ‘there was excel-lent stabling for 6 horses (3 loose boxes and 3 stalls)’. There was also a Saddle Room together with three loose boxes, a Capital Loft and Saddle Room. Reading that paragraph once more I have reached the conclusion (maybe wrongly) that our present village hall had quartering for six horses which begs the question; how many animals were kept in the building behind the hall because, according to an infor-mant of mine, it could also cater for several horses. Of course, we must remember that a hundred years ago horses were the principle mode of transport, although the rich and famous had discovered the joys of the horseless carriage. Behind the village hall is a small garden, with a high hedge which separates it from the property behind. During the halcyon days of Caythorpe House the area between vil-lage hall and private property neither had garden nor hedge as this area formed the yard. Indeed, it appears that when the stables disappeared so soil was put over the cobbles but this top dressing has proved inadequate for proper gardening. To prove the point the per-son living there now actually scuffed up a little of the grass to reveal the old cobblestones beneath. Caythorpe House estate has some interesting facets. For instance, in order to reach the orchard garden, on the north side of the main house, a person had to cross in front of the stable block to a high, stone wall with access to the orchard by a short flight of stone steps but this doorway has been blocked by concrete blocks but it still indicates its posi-tion. However, that is not the only door between what was stables area and orchard gar-den. There is another situated between stone outhouses-cum-individual-stable and the bungalow at the lower end of the secondary entry to the estate. Have you ever seen a Mulberry tree? No? Neither had I until I saw the one that stands in the front of what I call ‘stable house’ and behind the new houses on Holy Cross. This ancient, 200 hundred years old tree has suffered all manner of hardship but has once again started to grow which proves that you can’t keep an old tree down! There is so much to unearth about this part of Caythorpe, including another discovery relating to Wayside Cottage that needs to be explored. There is a question mark brewing, will I ever reach St Vincent’s Church, or Chapel Lane, and what about Old Lincoln Road? This is our village, our history and I am determined to press on for no other reason than this exploration has become like a drug to me now, the larger the dose, the more my

appetite increases. Next month, the biddy bits that seem like an appendage to the Caythorpe House saga but which are part of the fascinating story which is our heritage.

British Legion Poppy Appeal News

On behalf of the British Legion I would like to publicise my appreciation of one of the Poppy Appeal collectors in the Caythorpe and Freiston area Mrs Jean Wines of Eastcliffe Square has been one of the truly outstanding stalwarts of the Poppy Appeal. For thirty three years she has been collecting on behalf of the British Legion, which is an wonderful record! Sadly she has been a little poorly of late and has decided that it is time to retire. We wish her a long and happy retirement and I thank her. However appeals in the news have born fruit. Mrs Sadie Marshall has volunteered to take over Jean's round. Sadie and her husband Sean have a Royal Air Force history, and three new people have also asked to be collectors. Mr Herbert Bradford is a 'youngster' who has seen over eighty summers, who had friends in the war who paid the ultimate sacrifice! He is going to do parts of Wheatgrass Lane. Mrs Carol Palmer has two sons in the Army and she is collecting in Gorse Hill Lane and Chapel Lane, and Mr Richard Gilmore who is ex Royal Air Force will be co-ordinating with Mr Bradford around Wheat Grass Lane and Templeway Close. I thank them for their interest and people in the villages will be meeting them, when the campaign starts after the 25th October. I know that times are difficult and that money is very short, but could I please plead that you are all as generous with your donations as you can possibly afford and make the appeal for the year 2008 as successful as possible. My thanks to you all

School News HARVEST Many thanks to all those who supported our Harvest Festival and for all your generous donations for the Grantham Passage. AFRICAN DANCE WORKSHOP Our African Dance Workshop last Friday was a huge success and the children and staff thoroughly it. ROTARY SHOEBOX APPEAL We are once again supporting the Rotary Shoebox appeal and shoeboxes are available for collection from the school office or by completing the slip at the bottom of the letter. We do have to account for every shoebox the school has received so we would ask that instead of taping your £1 coin to the box after it has been filled you pay your £1 when you collect your empty box from school. Instruction leaflets are available giving suggestions for items to be put into the boxes which are then sent to families in Eastern Europe. The three categories are toys, teenage or household. Filled boxes need to be returned to school by Friday 14 November. We only have a lim-ited supply of boxes this year so if you take a box and find you are not able to fill it please return the empty box. Thank you. FOOTBALL CLUB Mr Harvey’s football club is proving popular and numbers are steadily increasing. After half term we would ask that the children bring in separate kit including boots and shin pads for football as PE kit is not suitable for muddy weather! We do have a small supply of kit including boots and shin pads for those children who do not have their own so please ask. LINCOLN CITY Lincoln City Football club will be coming into school after half term every Wednesday morning to do some agility games with the children from Reception to Year 4. Please could you make sure the children have their PE kit in school with trainers that are suitable for outdoors. FSA NEWS The Winter Fayre will take place on Saturday 8 November 2.00 - 4.00 pm. Tombola, raffle prizes, and cakes would be appreciated. Also a reminder about the Quiz Night on Friday 14 November – more details to follow. HALF TERM School closes for the half term holiday on Friday 24 October and re-opens on Monday 3 November.

A r n h e m - O p e r a t i o n M a r k e t G a r d e n – T h e P l a n Operation 'Market Garden' 17th-26th September 1944

In August 1944, General Bernard Montgomery proposed a daring Allied offensive of one powerful thrust through Holland, across the Rhine and into the German heartland. The plan, requiring many divisions and virtually all the logistic support available to the Allies in Europe, was not agreed to by General Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander. In its place a smaller scale plan, but still a very ambitious one, was approved to secure a bridgehead across the Lower Rhine (Neder Rijn). Montgomery's 21st Army Group would attempt a narrow thrust to and beyond the Rhine, largely supported from its own resources. The plan was to lay an "airborne carpet" along the 64-mile Eindhoven-Arnhem road along which the British 2nd Army (spearheaded by XXX Corps under Lieut-General B.G. Horrocks) would advance rapidly to reach the Arnhem road and rail bridges which gave pas-sage across the last great natural barrier to the Reich, the Lower Rhine. The essential task of the airborne forces involved was to seize intact the bridges over the canals and rivers en route, nota-bly those at Son, Vegel, Grave (over the River Maas) and Nijmegen (over the River Waal) and finally the Rhine road bridge at Arnhem. This part of the plan was codenamed Operation "Market". The "Garden" part of the plan was the land offensive by the armour of Lieut-General Horrocks' XXX Corps and other elements of the 2nd Army. Operation Market was to be carried out by the 1st Allied Airborne Army under the command of General Browning. This included the US XVIII Airborne Corps - 82nd Airborne Division, 101st Airborne Division; the British 1st Airborne Corps - 1st Airborne Division, 1st Parachute Brigade, 4th Parachute Brigade, 1st Airlanding Brigade; 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade The Americans were to open the corridor from Eindhoven to Nijmegen, whilst the Brit-ish 1st Airborne Division under Major-General R.E. Urquhart were to seize the bridge at Arnhem. The 2nd Army was expected to reach Arnhem in 48 hrs. Next month, the story of the battle and the losses of our heroes. If you wish to join the Arnhem Committee, please contact Doreen Taylor (272848) or Simon Barter (273344)

At the time of writing there has been no progress on the social housing issues. The council asks people come to the Act of Remembrance at 11 a.m. on Sunday 9th November on the Church Green. Following the Last Post and Reveille being played, the names of the village men killed in WWI and WW2 (27) and those of Richard Green, Royal Navy and Patrick Marshall. Royal Air Force who were both killed in Iraq, will be read out. Wreath laying will follow. 29 individual crosses will be laid by members of the Brownies and Guides (Church Service details are on page 3). The next Parish Council meeting is on Wednesday the 12th November at 7:15 p.m. in the Village Hall lounge. All are welcome to attend. There is an open session prior to the start. SEEN IN THE GARDEN The RSPB website have introduced a new feature, ‘Share a Moment’ which in-vites contributors to share some special moment that they had witnessed in Na-ture. They make a good read. For us, there were two special moments, first, 4 Goldfinches all feeding together on the Niger feeder, two of them immature and with the sun shining on them, a lovely sight. The other day, we heard a screech-ing noise just outside the window and lo, the Sparrowhawk looking straight at Mary before she (the bird I mean!) flew off with her lunch, sadly one of the doves. If you thought there are a lot of Wood Pigeons around you are right, they are the third most common bird to be seen in the garden after Blackbirds and Blue Tits. This is the finding of the Garden Bird Watchers. They report that in a lot of areas they have not seen Cuckoos, House Martins or Wood Warblers this year. It is thought to be due to problems in their African wintering grounds. Our migrating birds are very vulnerable to climatic changes or destruction of habitats at each end and where they stop off to refresh themselves. Has any one seen Jays? We have not seen them here though there is no reason why not for though they are ground foragers, during the breeding season they will visit peanut feeders and feeding tables. My previous comment on the dearth of butterflies is borne out by observers. The lack of Small Tortoiseshells is believed to be due to the arrival of a parasitic fly from southern Europe. Brimstones were well up this year but the Painted Lady and Red Admiral almost entirely absent. I do miss them clustering on the Budd-leias and Sedums. We had a few Peacocks though. Recent research suggests that feeding birds over Spring and Summer has signifi-cant effects on breeding though it is not fully understood. What is clear is that doing so provides more opportunity for us to be involved with them and provid-ing habitat, particularly important for species of conservation concern like House Sparrow and Starling.

Clerk to the Council Mr Pat Fleming 01400 275 105 Parish Council News

The council met with Environment Agency representatives in pollution control and monitoring to ask questions concerning the granting of a permit to PBM Power, of Sta-tion Road, to operate a biomass generator on the mid UK site. This plant is an incinera-tor burning non-hazardous waste wood to provide electricity to the National Grid. The following points are amongst the issues discussed:-

The Environment Agency are confident they can provide effective monitoring. There will be no local monitoring off site. The EA representatives are happy to attend any meeting to discuss the site moni-toring. Monitoring reports and audits and inspections carried out by the EA will be made available. It is expected there will be 24/7 site supervision by the operators. Discharges from the chimney will be within the allowed parameters and in the words of the EA ‘will be safe’. During certain weather conditions, local air quality may be affected as the village is not a smoke-free zone. Background noise from the turbines may sometimes be heard. Checks will be made to ensure non-hazardous wood is used. If there was not enough wood to keep the incinerator going then the operator would have to apply for a permit to burn other types of fuels. Details of the ash type and amount are not yet known. Conditions are in place to ensure its safe storage and removal.

There is a concern by the council that during certain types of weather, ie: no wind, fog and air inversion caused by air and land temperature change that local air quality will deteriorate as the ‘safe’ gases coming from the chimney at several thousand cubic metres per hour, 24 hours a day will combine with domestic coal, oil and gas fumes from the village chimneys and flues to create a health risk. This point will be subject to further discussion. The Parish Council by the time of publication will have discussed and made observations on the planning application to allow 13 mobile homes and 13 travelling caravans in a grass field at full-back. Some caravans sheds and hard standing is already in situ. The parish failed to progress into the second round of the Best Kept Village competition.
