John W. Lough, PhD, Professor, Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy, joined MCW in 1977.
During his career, Dr. Lough has earned an international reputation as an expert in the science of cardiac development and regeneration while also contributing leadership and innovation to his department and to medical and graduate education.
Dr. Lough began his MCW career the same year the Basic Science Building opened and was an important part of a group of young basic scientists who built exceptional research programs that enhanced MCW’s national standing within academic medicine. Dr. Lough has published 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals regarding his investigations of the cellular, biochemical and genetic underpinnings of heart tissue regeneration, and has received significant research funding from the National Institutes of Health throughout his career. Further, he has contrib-uted to the national advancement of cardiac science by serving on numerous federal research funding study sections and grant review panels.
Dr. Lough has made invaluable contributions to the education of MCW’s medical and graduate students. After teaching clinical and microscopic anatomy for 20 years, he and several colleagues led a successful effort to modernize the courses – placing MCW at the forefront of academic medical centers adopting virtual microscopy for the teaching of cell and tissue biology as well as integrated medical neuroscience. The positive reception to this innovative method, as well as his experience in the traditional medical school curriculum, positioned Dr. Lough to contribute to the creation of the “Molecules to Cells” course in the Discovery Curriculum, as well as to lead the workgroup charged with evaluating the new curriculum.
Dr. Lough also has contributed leadership as the Interim Chair of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy from 1995-1997 and from July 2016 through August 2017. During these tenures, Dr. Lough has provided tremendous support to the department’s faculty members and has valued and promoted collaborative science and the mentorship of junior faculty members.

Dr. Meurer is an extraordinary educator, physician and community-engaged researcher. She has built the academic fellowship in primary care and community-engaged research program into an incubator for doctors and PhD-trained scientists to advance work in healthcare access, quality and cost-effectiveness by drawing on interdisciplinary expertise. Dr. Meurer helped secure and sustain support for the fellowship program through the US Health Services and Resources Administration.
Her penchant for teaching includes the medical school curriculum, where she contributed to the development of the Scholarly Pathways program for individualizing the learning experience, including the creation of the Urban and Community Health Pathway, which she leads. She has shown the ability to work across departments and with community-based organizations to provide outstanding opportunities for students to gain experience in community-engaged research and community service. In addition to her educational leadership responsibilities, Dr. Meurer has advised and mentored more than 50 students, residents and fellows and provided guidance to help them grow successful careers in academic medicine.
As a community-engaged and medical education researcher, Dr. Meurer has studied topics ranging from food insecurity and injury prevention to how medical students select their specialties. She contributed to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant to address the impact of injury in the Midwest region, and her collaborative scientific model for student specialty selection remains a relevant paradigm in the field of medical education research. She has been the principal investigator on a number of Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment and Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program projects. She has presented almost 200 national, regional and local lectures, workshops and posters, and her mentees have presented hundreds of their own presentations during her MCW career.

Neil S. Mandel, PhD, Professor in the Departments of Medicine (Nephrology), Biophysics and Biochemistry, joined the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1978. Soon after arriving, he worked with other biophysics-oriented faculty members, including those in the clinical Departments of Radiology and Medicine, to establish an accredited Biophysics Graduate Program, which led scientific and academic collaborations that contributed to the rapid expansion of grant funding for biophysics research. These early events contributed to the later development of the Department of Biophysics. In 1988, Dr. Mandel accepted the position of Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Dr. Mandel held that position for 23 years. In that role, Dr. Mandel dramatically expanded the research program at the VA. He played a pivotal role in encouraging new MCW faculty to come to the VA. With his guidance, MCW built many labs at the VA and the number of NIH and VA grants rapidly grew. For these, and for many other contributions, Dr. Mandel was awarded MCW’s Distinguished Service Award in 1995. Dr. Mandel’s research on kidney stones and other crystal-related diseases has been well funded by the NIH and by the VA.
