    2hese t%o e$ents 5total three days6 %ere organi7ed 8ointly (y #9C, NS+D# and SD# in

    partnership %ith N*ORS+ South #sia regional support unit 5RS:6. Since the in$ited NGOs %ere

    mem(ers of either one or more of the four of these four partner organisations, the follo%ing(ac&ground and (rief information of each of these organi7ing partners %ere also sent to the in$itees;

    #9C is one of the oldest < pioneering organi7ations %or&ing for the de$elopment < empo%erment

    of %omen. 9ith more than =uarter million mem(ers and fi$e hundred (ranches all o$er the country,

    #9C has (een %or&ing in the propagation of Rene%a(le +nergy 2echnologies especially for %omen

    for more than three decades. dentified as the Nodal #gency (y the MN+S 5No% MNR+6 #9C has

    implemented $arious programs li&e mpro$ed Chulha, Biogas, Solar 2hermal and Solar >.?. >rograms

    @ Solar Aantern)Home light system etc6.

    NS+D# 5ntegrated Sustaina(le +nergy and +cological De$elopment #ssociation6 is the national

    ndia organi7ation formed (y the grassroots NGOs %ho had (een in$ol$ed in the promotion of

    rene%a(le energy programmes %ith special focus on the implementation of (iogas de$elopment and

    rene%a(le energy technologies in rural areas of the country, since !0. NS+D# is a mem(ership

    organi7ation, at present ha$ing a(out 0 ndian NGOs as its mem(ers. 2he mem(er organi7ations had

    (een operating as an informal net%or& for more than ! years (efore esta(lishing NS+D# as a

    formal (ody. NS+D# %as registered as a society on Decem(er !!, !.

    SD# 5Sustaina(le De$elopment #gency6 is the association of o$er E0 grassroots NGOs from states

    of South ndia, and their mem(ers ha$e (een implementing (iogas plants under the #egis of MN+S

    5No% MNR+6, Go$ernment of ndia for o$er decades. SD# is also one of the mem(ers of NS+D#

    as %ell as N*ORS+.

    N*ORS+ 5nternational Net%or& for Sustaina(le +nergy6 %as founded (y NGOs in$ol$ed in the

    promotion of Sustaina(le +nergy in !" at the Glo(al *orum of NGOs of the :nited NationFs +arth

    Su(mit held in 4une !" at Rio De 4anerio, Bra7il. 2he $ision of N*ORS+ is (ased on rene%a(le

    technologies including solar, %ind, (iomass, (iogas and micro)hydro. #t present it has more than !0

    mem(ers of %hich o$er "0 are in South #sia. N*ORS+ South #sia is a regional net%or& of

    independent non)go$ernmental organi7ations that encourage the gro%th of sustaina(le energy

    solutions in order to reduce po$erty and protect en$ironment.2he NS+D# is hosting the N*ORS+ South #sia since Decem(er !, and the Secretary General)

    Chief +ecuti$e of NS+D# is the N*ORS+ Regional Coordinator for South #sia.

    #ll ndia 9omenFs Conference 5#9C6 %hich is the National *ocal >oint for ndia 5Gender6 is

    acti$ely in$ol$ed %ith the acti$ities of N*ORS+ right from the (eginning. #9C is one of the &ey

    pro8ect partners of N*ORS+ S# capacity (uilding for NGOs in S+2s.

    2he in$ited organisations %ere also informed that these t%o e$ents %ill (e t%o distinct e$ents, (ut

    since the NGO in$itees %ere common to (oth, to sa$e in time of tra$el and logistic and costs as %ell

    as for the sa&e con$enience %ere organi7ed one after another. 2he in$itee organisations %ere also

    informed that the participatory national %or&shop to (e held on the first t%o days %ill (e de$oted

    eclusi$ely for discussing the t%o manuals namely, the Sustaina(le +nergy 2echnical 5S+26 and the

    *inance ManualI, prepared (y the N*ORS+ Capacity Building pro8ect partners from South #sia

    2he national %or&shop %as planned to (e conducted in a participatory mode to ensure maimum

    participation of the representati$es of all the NGOs. 2his %as proposed to (e achie$ed (y theformation of three (rea&)up or %or&ing groups soon after the inaugural and plenary sessions. 2he

    Group Discussions) in three (rea&)up groups %ould come up %ith the important pointsrelated to the t%o manuals and ho% to use them effecti$ely as the manuals to train the NGO

    trainers as %ell as the grassroots de$elopmental NGOs in$ol$ed in the promotion andimplementation of rene%a(le energy technologies 5R+2s6. 2he three (rea&)up groups %ouldalso use these t%o manuals as resource materials for the discussions. n addition to discuss

    the practical pro(lems and issues related to the energy access, and ho% the sustaina(le energy

    solutions the different local organisational solutions incorporated under chapter) of the S+2manual %ould (e rele$ant to their local situation, and ho% they as a group %ould utili7e these

    solutions for po$erty reduction. +ach (rea&)up group %ould present their respecti$e

    suggestions and recommendations to the in the plenary sessions for discussions, clarificationand finalisation of consensus recommendations as %ell as an NGO statement.

    2hese three (rea&)up groups of participants %ould also prepare a tentati$e L*ollo%)up programmeF of

    the national %or&shop to (e ta&en up during the net /)months as the part of the N*ORS+ CapacityBuilding pro8ect, as the last acti$ity (efore its is formally completed. 2he small (rea&)up groups %ill

    also prepare a tentati$e L#ction >lanF in the first t%o days, %hich %ould (e compiled and presented at

    the end of the third and last day in the plenary session of the national seminar on the Decentrali7ed

    +lectricityJ>o%er Generation, and a final draft L#ction >lan for ndiaF %ill (e prepared and endorsed

    in principle (y the participants, to (e implemented as a long term programme (y NGO, (eyond the

    present pro8ect period %hich %ill (e formally completed in Decem(er E!, "001.

    Aater on, using this L#ction >lan for ndiaF also %ith inputs recei$ed from other pro8ect partners from

    the three countries 55i.e. draft national L#ction >lan of NGOs for Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Aan&aF6,

    national NGO seminar on LD)5)+t(a7*:) E7)5t(*5*t/P')( G)+)(at*'+?02hus the third day %as

    de$oted eclusi$ely for the D)5)+t(a7*:) E7)5t(*5*t/P')( G)+)(at*'+, through t%o main sessions

    in the forenoon of "/ thMay %here eminent eperts from the field %ith eperience in one or more

    aspects related to planning, designing, implementing and operating of such systemsK as %ell asrepresentati$es of pro8ect funding and monitoring in ndia, %ere in$ited to present their eperience as

    %ell as participate in the interacti$e session %ith the participants.

    n the concluding session, 5afternoon of "/ thMay6 the draft action plans prepared on the " th< "th

    %as discussed and final draft %as inputs from all the participants during the plenary session. Aater on

    2he $enue of this participatory training programme is a standing eample %here $arious

    rene%a(le energy sources are (eing fully utili7ed. Different Solar +nergy Solutions ha$e

    (een put to practice %ithin the premises $i7., Solar Steam Coo&ing System, "00 &9 standalone solar po%er plant and RO

    system for treatment of

    passionately promotes the R+2s.

    . Solar thermal (y para(olic reflector; +ach para(olic reflector is of . s=m generating

    up to 000 %atts. 2hese raise %ater to steam at &gJs=m pressure and E00 degrees

    Celsius temperature. 2his steam is used in coo&ing drums. +ach reflector has a recei$erJconcentrator. 9ater is lead inside the reflector and this %ater gains heat to (e con$erted

    to steam at E0 degrees Celsius. 2here is an automatic trac&ing system for solar rays)

    One of the main reasons for the success of these solar energy (ased %or&ing systems are due

    energy en$ironment. +nergy is the important element in our daily schedule@consumption)

    production@deli$ery. t canFt (e su(stituted (ut the source can (e. 2herefore, it is all the more

    crucial to ha$e such capacity (uilding %or&shops only to $igorously promote the afforda(leR+2s in ma&ing the maimum use of natural resources of alternati$e energy.

    She chose the right topic of stressFF to address the participants right at the start of the

    meetings representing num(er of NGOs and social %or&ers from $arious states. n heruni=ue %ay she made it plain that in human eistence stress is the portion and emphasi7ed to

    deal %ith stress %ith positi$e attitude. Dr. #sha shared %ith the participants some &ey factors

    to deal %ith this critical issue0

    Stress doesnFt lie outsideK it is our attitude to%ards it. >ositi$e thin&ing and attitude is the &ey.

    >eople change, situation change, (ut do %e also change along %ith them -eep challenging your

    assumptions.

    DonFt allo% yourself to get conditioned. Sometimes %e associated certain things to memory.

    O(ser$e traffic control of thoughts. 2here is a continuous flo% of positi$e, negati$e, necessary

    and %aste thoughts. Research says maimum num(er of thoughts that arises in our mind is %aste

    and aimlessly uses our precious energy.

    Say no to negati$ity, %aste, adopt filtering of the thoughts

    Mrs. Aalita Bala&rishnan, Director 9or&shop said that %e %ere delighted to ha$e %ith us Mr.Su(ramaniam, presently, Secretary, MNR+)GO, he has (een associated %ith many RuralDe$elopment programmes introduced (y the GO and is %ell $ersed %ith conditions@

    pro(lems and the needs of people in rural areas. He had (een more than &ind for sparing his

    $alua(le time to come all the %ay from Delhi to inaugurate this National 9or&shop andaddress us. 2his indicates his genuine interest in such endea$ours. One of the areas that he

    %as passionate a(out is R+2s, for %hich he etends all the support that GO offers.

    Mr. ?. Su(ramaniam in his inaugural

    address dealt at length the significance)practicality and a(undant a$aila(ility ofthe natural resources. He tal&ed a(out the

    ne% source of (io)fuel and mentioned the

    %ays of utili7ing the same sources of

    energy more efficiently. Sun)$ia(leoptions for the future %ould ha$e an actual

    capacity utili7ation of po%er only 0

    and it %as necessary to store energyproduced during the day in (atteries and

    utili7e it during night. n his rich

    eperience he felt it %as important toma&e people understand the usefulness and importance of Rene%a(le +nergy Sources and

    %or& to%ards it for achie$ement @ not in =uantity, (ut in =uality. 2here are good num(er of

    eamples %here non)con$entional energy sources ha$e (een put to effecti$e and successful

    use, such as Smo&eless $illages near 2irupati %here Solar coo&ers) Solar %ater heater) Solarpanels etc. ha$e (een used successfully.

    He also eplained the schemes that %ere under

    his Ministry to solely promote the R+2Fs forthe (enefit of all and more so for the poor

    using the net%or& of NGOFs. He also shared

    the reasons %ith the participants for changinghis ministryFs name from MN+S to MNR+

    N*ORS+ launched a Capacity Building >ro8ect of NGO for >o$erty Reduction using

    Sustaina(le +nergy Solutions, in four South #sia Region countries, consisting

    Mr. Myles stressed the need to not only teach the partners and people especially the poor, (utensure that once trained they also ha$e right to use the technology for their (enefit to%ards

    such as solar lanterns etc. should (e made a$aila(le at these places. She also said that

    she got to &no% a(out organisations near her area and can no% approach them forassistance and net%or&. n the end she said that this %or&shop has (een $ery useful.

    . Mr. Shan&er #gra%al;) He tal&ed specifically a(out %omen empo%erment and as&edpeople to ponder upon the fact that in)spite of so much funds (eing spent (y the Go$t.

    %omen are still getting no (enefits. He ga$e an eample to the fact that %omen in

    certain regions are not getting their %ido%Fs pension. He shared his eperiences of ruralareas %here people are still $ery poor and said that %e should gi$e our (est to the

    society. He said that %e must go and tal& to these people and he also suggested

    continuous connecti$ity among $arious organisations and prompt and thorough

    implementation of rene%a(le energy technologies 5R+2s6 for po$erty reduction.

    seconded this and ga$e an eample of employment generation in southern states.

    programmes %ere underta&en (y NGOs and go$ernment. He said that the lac& ofelectricity is a ma8or pro(lem, so the solar >? lanterns should reach the $illages. Healso tal&ed a(out Dalit community not getting (enefits, and the capacity (uilding

    opportunity in R+2s should (e utili7ed for their (enefits as %ell.

    organi7ers to plan more such %or&shops and %here she %ould plan to send her team,

    responsi(ility for po$erty reduction and %ith its a(ility to reallocate finances (et%eensectors. 2he state must set a target of increasing efforts to pro$ide (asic energy solutions,

    %ith the efforts increasing annually %ith the economic gro%th of ndia. NGOs are important

    mediators, and ndian NGOs ha$e played crucial roles in (ringing energy solutions to thepeople, and are ready to continue the %or& as the current collection of successes sho%.

    and implementation of sustaina(le and rene%a(le energy, especially for po$erty reduction
