FOLK DRAMA IN TAMILNADU:
Tamil Nadu has a very rich heritage of drama as a medium of entertainment.
The inhabitants of Tamil Nadu have themselves developed various dramas of their own.
Dance dramas were frequently staged in temples. Almost every temple had a theatre or atleast a stage attached to it.
Dance dramas of Tamil Nadu include: ‘Mavli natakam’ , ‘Pagal vesham’ ,’Modi’ etc.
Pagal vesham is also known as the Day Costume Drama. This drama is performed by an actor or great merit , who is an expert in art of make-up & can conceal his identity.
PAGAL VESHAM:
This folk drama involves a person, who conceals an egg within a heap of sand & draws 7 lines. The man who tries to unearth it is called Modi & another man tries to prevent it by thrashing him.A buffoon intervenes & gives comic releif through light songs.
MODI:
The appeal of Folk Media has historically been both functional and aesthetic. It always served to entertain, educate to reinforce existing ideas or idealogies or change existing values & attitudes. Unlike Mass Media, programmes produced for large & diverse audience, folk forms can use familiar dialects for most intimate & local communication at village level.
ADVANTAGES OF FOLK MEDIA:
Disadvantages include the dangers in “overloading” certain traditional channels with too many “messages” of instrumental nature.Channels could only be loaded according to their capacity with respect in particular to cultural, religious or other sensitively integral elements.
DISADVANTAGES OF FOLK MEDIA:
media in Tamil Nadu is an intrinsically valuable form of popular entertainment or artistic expression. It is worth presenting & developing for its own sake. The aim is to get people to perform specific acts to achieve objectives of national policy. It is a channel for conveying information about available technique & facilities.
