THE MYSTERIES OF DNA

This term 10 Hawking have been studying the topic “Genetics and Evolution”.

They have unravelled the mysteries of DNA by making origami models of the DNA molecule and by doing interactive DNA building activities online. This was then culminated by an actual DNA extraction.

The students used strawberries mashed in salty detergent solution to extract the DNA and dissolve it. After filtering out the solids they used icy cold ethanol to bring the DNA out of solution, making the white strands visible. These were then examined under the microscope.

Unfortunately we didn’t quite get around to making a transgenic species!
